Kevin It means that you're constantly coming up with new frameworks. Openness makes you attracted to new ideas and challenges the way you currently look at the world on a regular basis.
This is totally my problem, I conceive of very extreme ideas that could work but if I try them I risk destabilizing my life, and what has happened in the past for me is that I end up single-mindedly pursuing these ideas until I haven't even noticed that certain problems are encroaching on me and I need to make them my priority in order to keep myself on two feet.
I'm on the higher side of neuroticism and extremely high in openness. I have to regulate what I open myself up to and have had to eliminate watching headline news and politics which was extremely difficult.
@stephencarlsbad same here! It's such a constant contradiction of one's nature to NEED novelty but also be easily stressed out by it. Personally, I'm extremely high on Extroversion, as well so there's just another level of contradiction there for me haha

Im cant agree more on that with you! Im glad to hear that you feel the same. Still need to work on the way I handle exams and general projects at the univerity though. Wow, this one really resonated with me, I have exactly this problem of high neuroticism and low agreeableness, these traits tend to Clash harshly with oneanother, it's like I'm not compatible with myself.
Oh my godness this is accurate on me too with those two traits. My competetivness puts myself in uncomfortable situations and my neurotism just have to deal with it
Avoid people that always try to make you sad about crazy shit that happens in the world. Or always tells you when somebody dies even though you have NO relationship with them.
JP was right about everything. Eating well, sleeping, abstaining from overstimulating and negative things have been so important for my mental, emotional well-being. I already care too much, and seeing suffering in the world that I can’t do anything about makes me feel worse. It’s better I don’t see things that are upsetting that I can’t do anything about.
Jordan gives good advice. I'm very low in agreeableness, so I try to do someone a favor on a regular basis. Each week I pick someone who definitely deserves to be shot in the head, and then I don't. Furthermore, I have noted that the deserving person is sometimes me.
Take it with a pinch of salt. I have the same personality profile and I never eat breakfast - particularly not one heavy in fat. I don't feel hungry in the morning. My lunch is just a salad with protein and dinners are bigger. My doctor is OK with it. Intermittent fasting philosophy is OK with it. Skipping food when I'm not hungry helps me keep the weight off and feel sharper/more productive during the day. His second advice (lower news consumption) is on point and has helped me immensely.
@@abhijeetmulye2079 Breakfast doesn't have to be in the morning. Breakfast just means it's your first meal of the day; that's why it's called breakfast because you break your fast.
I think I am high in Openess and Neuroticism, low in other 3. I have spent so much time sulking about my emotions and wasted so much of opportunity thinking I might feel good after sometime. Thank you so much for practical knowledge you are sharing Dr. JBP. Pls continue to do the same
This advice is gold. I started having 85% 15% red meat in the morning and it made my volatility go down. I was really losing my temper at work and this took everything down a notch and made things a bit more manageable. Thank you for this advice Dr. Peterson. It helped me and those around me lol
@@Siggi-Bear I literally eat a single patty of 85 15 beef. Just a hamburger in the morning on whole wheat bread. Avoid too much sugars. You can experiment a little too though
I am very high in neuroticism and basically low in every other trait. I take everything personally, I always have the impression people are out there to get me and to inflict as much pain and damage onto me. I live in a constant state of fear and panic, my fight or flight mode being almost constantly active. It is exhausting. Absolutely exhausting. I’m very high on negative emotions and a carry a ton of anger and frustration with me. I experience very little joy in life. I always see the negative side of things. I was severely bullied in school and women were never interested in me (I’m 31 and still a virgin). If anybody has any advice for me, please let me know.
Well, you cant blame the big five results or in other word your psychological state of mind for you misfortune. You must confront the things that give you extreme negative emotion. Is it your job which don't fulfil you, is it your body which is physically sick because of unhealthy lifestyle or your social life where you have challenges. You have to come up with solutions for these problems. You need a daily routine to stabilise, build discipline, confidence -->boost Conscientiousness. Bro I myself have Neuroticism 99%, Openness 2%, Extraversion 4%, Agreeableness 1%, but 41% Coscientiousness because Im hard working, implement plans, maintain order and structure.
99 percent neuroticism yep. I always felt like I I’ve had such a hard time getting along with other guys because I take jokes really personally and I get defensive. It all clicks now. As for a solution, it looks like for us it’s gonna be a constant grind where we try to overcome our own nature.
@@dodgeshadow099 Yes I’m also 99% neuroticism. And 1% agreeableness and 3% openness and extroversion. I can relate so much to what you said about taking jokes personally. Good luck bro… we’re really fighting against our own nature as you said
Hey Fred! I'm as well high in neuroticism to the point the event worldwide events like the war and everything and things out of my control, will get me to a very high negative emotion, we are the same age this is what's working for me so far, try to make a list of your daily tasks that focus on yourself and the future you want for you, begin with a calendar and schedule. its not going to happen overnight, its going to take effort and discipline you can begin with a walk in the park :) ;) slay one dragon at the time :)

WeeLee I didn’t say that agreeableness makes more friends, but it helps because you seem friendlier to people so they are more likely to stick with you, and high agreeableness means you are more likely to obey the law, and not go to jail, the down side is that I have high neuroticism, I’m more realistic and sometimes I catch myself making scenarios that stress me out even though I know they would never happen
I have a similar personality to the person who asked the question, although not as high in neuroticism, but still higher than average, especially for a male. I find the combination of high openness, high neuroticism and low agreeableness has it's advantages. The high openness/high neuroticism means you are constantly thinking of new things and constantly shooting them down, so that in the end you only put forward the best ideas, the ones that survived your internal attacks. Being low in agreeableness at the same time means once you've settled on the best idea, you can be aggressive in advocating for it. Although I find I have the best success when I work against my type, like Dr. Peterson said, going out of my way to consider others.
Exactly, I'm very creative and highly neurotic (79%) so I will create a lot of stuff and then throw most of it away because I don't think it's any good. Like Weerd Science said: I write my rhymes in pencil so I can erase em, The morning after I write them, I wake up, read em and hate em,
One of the things that have work for me is diet, "GABA" boosting foods, high in folic acid, taurine, lithium etc. The key point is to lower cortisol levels by consuming this kind of foods, the other thing is to avoid stimulants like caffeine, nicotine or energy drinks you can substitute those with green tea (matcha) or deacaf coffee and as peterson said optimize ur circadian rhythm by sleeping every day at the same time and waking up to the same time make a routine, that will help to gain control in ur emotions.
He is totally right. My late mother picked up on my sour attitude when I didn't eat. I MUST have a solid breakfast, or else I will be in trouble - headaches and fugue. Coffee picks up my attitude, and tea.
Just did your Understand myself Test and scored 3 for Agreeableness and 98 for Neuroticism. It confirmed what I suspected. Most of my life is a car crash, but on the flip side I find my nervous energy helps me exercise frequently. I eat a lot of protein as it makes me feel notably more regulated, on every level.
I am very low on agreeableness and compassion and politeness and moderately high on Neuroticism and my relationships with people evolve around them trying to come closer to me and then they get frustrated by my cold behavior towards them. the thing is that i have social anxiety to some degree. it was way heavier but now i act freely but still have anxiety when it comes to possible humiliation. i used to be bullied in school when i was young. what can i do about it? does my behavior towards people is just a symptom of the trauma?
Michael s it is definitely a work in progress, a slow one at that. JP is very helpful is getting you to question yourself. Have you been able to do that in your life regarding your trauma? I feel like I'm missing pieces of my puzzle. An understand of my why I act certain ways always seems hazy (e.g. I never can seem to recall an original traumatic event that possibly triggered/led to this now-ingrained thought process/pattern/habit.
Very good advice mr peterson, i have just realized im very open minded and like to pick things apart to prove reality but im constantly overwhelmed by fear and extreme stress to the point i can't sit or lay still when my mind just keeps accelerating at a pase too fast for my bodily well being.
Decrease neuroticism: - eat bigger breakfast (high fat & protein) - wake up and go to bed at same time - keep hunger down because insulin response etc - decrease negative news because constant exposure to catastrophes of world is bad.
I am very compassionate, polite and empathetic. At the same time if I don’t agree with someone I will not do what they ask or agree with them until I hear a good reason to do so. Because of this I have always been uncertain about my level of agreeableness.
JP have so much ending sentences with "so..." 😅 (As a good thing) Left me wanting more and more somewhat obvious advices but stated with clear and articulate style that feels like you're there in his therapy session..
asia321999 man I’ve been struggling with this almost all my life, my mom’s side struggles with it too, being high in neuroticism but also high in agreeableness is literally being softhearted with other people like your family, but being very hard on yourself, you would torture yourself just so your family can be happy, for me it’s hard not to criticise my self, I often do it without realizing it, but I tried to control it but trying to “love myself” and the only reason I have friends is because I’m very agreeable to a point that my friends want to hangout with me more than I want to hangout with them.
asia321999 tips for handling your personality? Well listen to this video, and also try to change your thinking by always thinking of the bright side or just think of positive thoughts, if you do this consistently your neuroticism will gradually go down, but it won’t disappear and won’t go down a lot, but it will make a difference to where you will definitely feel more satisfied, and if you have bad memories you want to forget then either talk to a person about it or write it down, JP talks about this a lot too, but you do have an advantage, and that’s agreeableness, it’s very powerful for relationships and it will help you in life in general
@@franst735 I’ve come to find that we all have our problems with our own personality types. Like JP said you want to expand on it, I’m 95thp neuroticism, 98thp in openness, and 2ndp agreeablenes. I figured out all of these helpful tips on my own through trial and error. But it took me 18 years of my adult life to figure it out. Wish I knew about Peterson sooner. The stepfather I never had.
Eating a breakfast that does not contain carbohydrates works extremely well if you are prone to stress or feel stressed even before you get to work. I obeyed this advice of Jordan and I am eternally grateful to him.
After doing meditation, and many other spiritual practises (which didnt help) for years, being vegan and doing everything right I turned praying to Jesus going to church and reading the Bible which is one single thing that is helping the most to find ground. It also requires discipline which is a treatment. Peterson talks about it a lot - founding moral ground.
This is me to a T. Interesting to see my type described and very helpful. I am also high in politeness and extroversion so that helps offset the extremely high levels of disagreeableness. As well as conscientiousness, which as Peterson describes does make one highly perfectionistic... I am very hard headed and stubborn (lowest percentile agreeableness) and this has actually saved me from wallowing in bleakness many many times
@@Growordecay because he and his advice he gives contains you more than genuinely making you grow as a person. Yes. The diet he promotes is a diet high in saturated fat and dietary cholesterol. Both of which are key factors in the development of heart disease, the US's leading killer. Not only heart disease, but serum cholesterol problems (raised by saturated fat and dietary cholesterol to a lesser extent) contribute to strokes, Alzheimers are general cardiovascular problems. People in your family are more likely to die from this disease than anything else in this country and he's giving advice that would further solidify this statistic.
I am mostly the same except 3rd percentile in agreeableness. This can also make your high neuroticism work since you need structure and stability which means often saying no.
Prof. Peterson- you are a treasure! I wish you great health so you can grace us with your presence. Thank you so much for your knowledge!!!God Bless you!
I believe I have the same personality traits but with high agreeableness. And I just realized that I developed a mechanism of rejecting the exposure to repetition, especially of things that trigger negative emotions. But unfortunately its sometimes inevitable especially if you care about people around you and they project a constant pattern of negative thinking or emotion.

I'm very high in openness and quite high in neuroticism. Anyone else have this? Would love to exchange notes. I have the EXACT problem Peterson describes - I have issues with complexity and uncertainty (especially when they come together). Which is super unhelpful as a very open person. And I never understood it considering my intellect. Oh and I'm also low in agreeableness and lonely as a result. This is all so applicable, it's nuts.

Beating myself up bc I didn’t eat breakfast and I don’t sleep regular hours bc of my job has me up early one day and up late the next every other day. I can’t control that save from finding a new job which I’m open too. I can eat breakfast at least and try to get my sleep schedule more consistent. The terrible thing is that in the state of mind I’m in it makes getting a good night sleep without tossing and turning and laying awake for hours nigh impossible. Which came first: the depression of the sleeplessness. This has been over a decades long battle, probably more like 2 decades at this stage. I’ve tried a lot but my aim and my energy must not be directed in the right ways. God I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

Get to intimately know and submit yourself to the Source of truth, love, hope, peace, purpose and meaning. Neuroticism is one thing but to believe that one's ultimate reality has no firm basis in the positive is to add an "adversary" you can't possibly overcome to your equation. I have the same personality traits as the person JP is responding to in the video. Diet is a HUGE regulator of my mood (which sucks but whatever). Here are a couple tips. Casein Protein is a lifesaver. Grab some at GNC. Tastes great. Mix a scoop or two with water (or almond milk...although water is just as good) It’s extremely slow absorbing so you don’t get any big spikes of insulin or blood sugar. Take a couple Fish Oil capsules with it (many benefits). It can keep you satiated for a good 6-8 hours...which will also help keep you on a lower cal diet, which will help your body composition, which will help fix metabolic irregularities, which will help you look and feel better long term, yadda yadda. Also, first thing AM on an empty stomach walk for 15-30 mins. And by walk I mean waaaalk. You don’t have to push it. This is called non-panting cardio. You only need to get your heart rate up to about 115. If your hormones are off you will often feel semi hungover first thing in the morning despite not having imbibed the night before. This will help reset them. Do these things in conjunction with a relatively low carb (no processed food) lifestyle and it will work wonders.
Thanks for the write up. What spiked my interest is the part about hormones and feeling hung over in the morning. Do you have any links or resources to point me to? I would really appreciate it, because I have that feeling quite often and I've never been able to figure out why. I thought it was due to me snorting and maybe having sleep apnea.
Juris Veipe I would recommend switching to a keto diet. You may have sleep apnea but A LOT of people stop snoring within a week of coming off carbs. I don’t have the references at hand but I played around with everything for a long time and a full on Keto diet is the best. Part of the problem even with a low carb diet is that of your body is still accustomed to burning blood sugar as fuel (rather than ketones) there will likely be some gluconeogenisis, which is where your body still tries to convert proteins to glucose. This can result in cortisol dumps in your sleep which can also contribute to the hung over feeling. For me, keto is the way to go. Technically its called a “Modified Keto” diet. Look it up and if it makes sense, give it a shot. It might suck for the first 3 weeks but stick with it and my guess is you’ll feel much better. You’re also MUCH less hungry once you get used to it, which is great. Good luck

Achieve your goals. Your mental knows what you need to get done emotionally. It is a must that you take care of those emotional feelings and those negative feelings will go alway. Go through the fear of the unknown with god on your side and speak positivity into existence.
You can be open An express how you feel But you also have to expect that other people have a difference of opinion and they have as much right to be as open as you. There's a reason that we were given 2 ears and one mouth. And always realize that if we are open with what we have to say, We may not always be right in our opinion. Nevertheless, it means you want to be heard, and you want to speak your truth, as far as you think is truth. There is always a reason why you want to be heard. If there is a lot of emotion in those words when you are speaking, and if this is frustration and anxiety, then the past could hold secrets you need to look at.
The good news is that conscientiousness is a personality trait that is flexible. Neuroticism paired with conscientiousness creates obsessively analytical or work-productive individuals since they're good at ruminating and dwellings on existent and non-existent problems, so they're good with problem-solving. So even though neuroticism is not flexible, you can still channel it productively if you up your conscientiousness
