Hi guys, i stumbled on this post by accident. Im a retired pot grower from California. I grew my own for years in a grow room i built on my property once it became legalized. Id grow between 3-5lbs every 4 months. I stored it in 5-quart bail lock Ball jars with rubber gasket seals. They were air tight. If I had some buds that over dried either before or after trimming id fill a jar full of buds and drop a leaf of iceberg lettuce on top of the buds. Id lock the jar shut. Id check it for moisture rehydration every day or two and gently shake the buds around to kinda mix em up. When the leaf of lettuce was shriveled up my weed would be just perfect! No water spill or taste change. Just a tip from a old pot grower.

I put mine in small mason jars and added a sterile sponge soaked in clear rum. Worked great.

Boveda will work. Just takes 2 or 3 weeks. If you're that impatient then hold the bowl full of tobacco under the faucet. Fill it just barely over the top of the tobacco. That works wonderfully.

Yes Bovida packs do work,but take a bit longer.I have a large 72 Bovida for 8 oz. Yorktown(C&D) in a 32 oz jar.Took about 14 days to notice a big difference.Worked great.

One bonus of receiving dry tobacco, in bulk, is that you get way more tobacco. I just received one pound of a straight Virginia (Daughters & Ryan: Windsail Silver). It was in a giant sized zip-loc bag and it fills four 32 oz Mason jars; tightly. Only, now I want to rehydrate it all. So I will try this method; because both Boveda (Size-8) and RAW clay tabs, together, aren't working in just days. One Boveda (62% Size-8) worked in a 32oz Ball latch-lock jar on another dry'ish tobacco. But it took nearly three weeks before the Boveda packet began feeling like it turned to crystals inside, and the tobacco felt right. Thanks.

The boveda will probably take a couple weeks to rehydrate and equalize. I use them for my cigars and work great. I think i may throw one in with one of my dry pipe blends and see how long it takes.

Rehydrating can be tricky business, but sometimes it's necessary to save tobacco. Kudos for doing the scaled-up experimenting. I've never tried such large amounts before. The Boveda packs work better to maintain what moisture the tobacco has, but not so much on rehydrating. I also wash my hands before handling any tobacco I'm going to cellar long term to help guard against mold. Very good video.

Thanks man, yea I wash my hands before handling as well. Yea I read that some people have rehydrates with Bovedas but, yea, not a chance for me. Perhaps with higher percentage packs.

If mold is the reason for using distilled water, then I think using boiled water should work just as well.

I was so captivated I almost forget to give a 👍🏼. 😅 Dryer stuff usually burns great but it often gets harsher and tastes like dirt which totally sucks. Keeping tobacco in the GoldiLocks Zone is a serious pain in the ass sometimes- but it often results in a much smoother tastier smoke which is very important to us all obviously. Anyway-Nice work.

I've been rehydrating tobacco for over 2 decades now because of the high cost/taxes of smokes. Rehydration of cheap/inexpensive tobacco, very dry, takes about 2 days. Prior to the ever increasing cost of tobacco I've used, good quality moist, Premier tobacco in the 6oz can. This can is cardboard with a metallic internal liner and top seal. The top/lid is plastic, no liner. Been using two of these cans at a time with a spray bottle of filtered water. Fill can to only 3/4 the total space of can, space needed for shaking. Spray tobacco within can then shake can, turn about 90 degrees and shake again between sprays. Usually about 6-12 sprays per can of tobacco. Works well even with my small hands because the can is light. Using the 6oz can as reference, large opening and not too deep, I've switched to using a Mason jars. The cans never sealed well, leaches, and the liner degrades with repeated use. The only brand of Mason jar that closely matches the 6oz cans and fits my hand better ( better hold is needed because of the heavier glass) is the 24oz Le ParFait Mason jar. Pricey at about 3-4X the price of Ball Mason jars, Le Parfait is the only brand that makes a wide mouth lower profile Mason jar, IMO. Each 24oz jar is good for about 2packs of smokes. Two jars are used at a time because of the 2 days needed for the tobacco to moisten properly. Use the tobacco too soon will cause the moisture to leach onto the paper of the smokes.

I don't know why we don't use the old method use to treat dry tobacco. Back in the days in Holland and most parts of Europe they use apple skin. The process which is still in use today is faster than 3 days like my buddy in the video. Now if you don't like apple taste (flavor) in your smoke then use potato skin. Large quantity you can cut the apple in very thin slice using a carrot peeler, but use a small amount to experiment because your stock can get too damp for a mean crisp smoke. Apple skin use is very fast, and you must check it like every 4 hours. Potato for me little slower but left no taste like apple. Now, if anyone knows of this method and like to comment, I'm listening. Happy Smoking. Keep away from Drums too many chemicals to kill a nail. I think Republic Tobacco really mess up a good Halfzware blend to the die hard Drums users.

Sugars and starches can introduce their own kind of undesirable mold which is one of the reasons for using distilled water.

Thanks for the video man, my Uncle just passed away, and as we were clearing out his estate, we found a huge 5 pound (well, it was 5 pounds when it was hydrated) bag of tobacco. I'm the only one in the family who smokes, so that naturally went to me. It'll probably take me quite a lot longer than you to re-hydrate all that! Question: as far as storing the re-hydrated tobacco in the mason jars, how effectively will that maintain moisture levels for long term storage? At the rate that I smoke, this stash might just last me half a lifetime, and though it won't be _that_ much of an issue to re-hydrate more down the line, might as well make the job easier, if I can.

I noticed (I'm not alone in this) that boveda packs can strip terpenes, and flavors making your blends taste more earthy and less complex. Not sure why though, It's a bummer since they're convenient for maintaining proper levels

Distilled water or tap water… makes zero difference. What is rehydrating the tobacco is evaporated water, which is as pure as it gets. Far more mold spores etc are in the air than in water. Get that moisture too high and you will get a mason jar full of mold. Most practical way to achieve the correct moisture content is Boveda packs, though it will take longer.

@@TheGingerPiper my grandfather was a fourth generation pipe smoker and I remember as a kid that he would smoke tobacco that was dry in a new pipe to break it in. Then after the pipe started getting some cake buildup on it he would switch to hydrated tobacco with moisture. I remember him cutting a slice of apple and putting it into his tobacco pouch if it had dried out if he received tobacco as a gift that he didn’t really care for. If his favorite tobacco dehydrated he would soak cotton balls in bourbon and drop them in there.
