How to Reinforce the Wrist of a Rifle Stock | MidwayUSA Gunsmithing

The wrist area of a rifle stock is typically the stock's weakest section. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, Founder of MidwayUSA, shows how the wrist can be reinforced to prevent damage or breakage using a piece of 1/4 inch all thread and some epoxy. This process is a simple, straightforward way to strengthen nearly any wooden rifle stock.

This SO reminds me of when I was a boy, and I got my first Daisy BB gun. It was at Christmas, and the air was cold when I brought it out for the first time and the plastic stock that they were putting on them at the time, broke at the thinnest part of the stock. BOY , was I heart broken.

I would go so far as to find low grade stainless steel threaded rod. I ALWAYS use Steve Smith's epoxy for tropical hard woods, due to it's long pot life, it's strength, and it is chemically made to react and bond with the resins in the wood. It works fine with walnut, maple, koa, mahogany, teak, etc. The Steve Smith epoxy is also not like the 5 minute two part wonder goop that gets super hot, makes a huge mess, and falls apart. I have been building guitars since 1983, and guitars have weak spots just like long guns do. Metal dowels often do not work, but that is another project for another day. It's also a bit of a trade secret too.

Is it possible to repair a gun that is broken at the wrist like that? I was just given my grandfathers Remington model 1900 side by side. Many years ago he unfortunately fell while hunting and broke the wrist in that exact manner. The gun is over 100 years old and has sentimental value, so I would love to have it repaired if at all possible.
@graymouser1
@graymouser1 5 лет назад
You'd just have to mate the pieces and then clamp it really firmly. Then drill, then epoxy the whole mess together. Probably you'd want to have the threaded rod actually emerge somewhere, so you could even nut and tighten it. Probably a lot of the splintered ends have been lost/snapped further, so getting the two ends mated smoothly enough would be the trick.

Maybe having a bigger hole allows the wood to expand and constrict during different temps and if you were to drop the rifle, allows the wood to have a little bit of play and flex before being stopped on the rod

@terifarley4770
@terifarley4770 7 лет назад
Depends on the design of the stock, injection molded stocks can be week in grip. A rynite stock is heavy for what it is, I see that as a potential weakness. A lighter synthetic may have a stronger grip tang area but not a heavy synthetic.

@terifarley4770
@terifarley4770 7 лет назад
Wood stocks definately have more use of fixing, particularly older gen stocks that arent available, and simply put, new wood stocks don't compare to wood stocks of 70s and older. They are worth fixing. Synthetics are only worth fixing if its tough to even save up for a mid priced B&C. But itsprobably more rational to just save up for the B&C that has the internal block. The carbolite is probably fine but a small step in price and the stock is much bette. I'd still like to know if anyone has fixed a broken grip on something like a rynite stock, and if it was succesful. My guess is it would require a bit of metal rod, but also adding fiberglass sheet to external surfaces. And if not wanting to change the shape, you'd have to remove material off the outside and reform the profile with the added fiberglass and resin. Poisnous process, both accetone fumes as well as resin hardener absorbing potentially through skin.
