In PART 3 of this series, Orin Martin reviews the tree's response to the previous prunings, how to make the 3rd round of prunings to stimulate growth and shape the tree to an open center form, and then shows how to make soil amendments to support the growth and health of the tree and surrounding soil.

I started my apple trees from seeds. And I believed I had stunted their growth keeping them in 1 gallon planters. And taking them in through the winters. I finally planted 2 of them. And they've gone 2 winters outside. Our cows got into the yard and ate one of them down to the trunk. But its actually geown nicely this year. My other one was spared by the cows. And is a very slow grower. I hadn't thought about pruning. I'm so glad I came across your videos. I look forward to pruning them next weekend. I planted a 3rd apple tree a month ago. I really need to plant all of them before winter. So they to can go dormant.

Apple trees grown from seed won't have dwarfing rootstock. The trees will want to grow really tall. So, as the trees reach the desired height, you'll want to "summer" prune them to stop their upward growth. Here's Orin's videos (2 parts) on summer pruning: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ioGcl7gHgc.html Below is a link to several dozen more fruit tree care videos. I thought my new baby trees were protected from the winter range mule deer in north central WA. No, deer get hungry and I have an expansive new vision for my “deer fenced” garden. I love all the good information given freely from the liberal CA government funded university. Keep up the good work!

We have lots of hungry deer on the farm that are kept out with an 8 foot wire fence. Most of these videos are funded by private donors and not from public funds. Great to hear that the information is helpful. Below is a link to several dozen more fruit tree care videos.
