The Kwikset Key-in-Knob Lock is extremely popular in the US and since Kwikset bought out Wesier Lock in Canada it will become more popular too across Canada. Not a secure lock and very easy to pick and lots of easy defeats that show no sign of entry. Also, extremely easy to break into with forced entry methods.
Note: The lock in this video is not the Smart Key lock (even easier to defeat with no signs of entry, a bent wire will open).

I don't have that long flat tool you are using and I can't see where to put it to pull that first piece out after lining it up. Very frustrating cause I have 5 to rekey for new lock sets for office where I work.

took a few to figure out how to release the spindle. You need to apply pressure to the spring between the plates.

I started out lockpicking but I like the locksmithing side better. Recently wanted a key to the front door at work. (They are too busy to get me and my office manager that key) Since we had the basement key which gives full access. The front door is more convenient since we park in the upper lot. So I read the bittings of the spare and originated 1 then copied that. Checked them in a cylinder I pinned up. Oddly enough the existing keys don't work in my cylinder but my copies and all others work in the door. SO! Boss expresses the desire to re key all the locks since it's never been done in umpteen years and we've had numerous copies out there to ex employees. I told him I would gladly do it for the fun of it. Basement is Kwikset Smart key knob and combination deadbolt that I installed a while ago. Front door is a standard Kwikset deadbolt that should be no problem but the knob was what I searched this out for. Thanks.

Having trouble with this step 1:13 - 1:26 EDIT: Apparently I'm slow at learning this. If anyone else is having trouble with this part, move the spindle and look in the area where he's inserting the tool. The part that moves is what you need to put pressure on. Initially I thought it was the latch that prevents the not from turning.

Hoping I can find something to use instead of that long flat tool you have to push the springs and release the cylinder. My kit doesn't have that tool (its not the newest kit and has probably had that part lost) so I gotta make due. I'm maintenance at a complex so I gotta change these locks. Oughta be interesting

blknies You can use a small flat-tip screwdriver & a flexible tension wrench, but it's much easier to use the Kwikset cylinder removal tool. They're usually around $3 on ebay or any decent locksmith supply site, like this one: www.lockpicks.com/simple-kwikset-core-removing-tool.html

Great video, thank you! I wanted to rekey a 3rd doorknob bc Lowe's only had packs of 2 doorknobs at the time. Also, I couldn't find the kwikset tool to buy (also didn't want to spend money on it) so I made one out of a piece of sheet metal with a dremel, worked fine.

Great video. I've only done this a couple of times so I have this video saved to refresh my memory. However I just changed all lock combos and original cylinder was upside-down. I put it where bible is at the top. But now the key has to turn away from the strike plate to lock. How do I reverse that?
@24hrMrLocksmith

Either remove the cylinder and rotate 180 degrees and reinstall or remove the entire lock and rotate 180 degrees and reinstall.

For anyone who sees this in the future and doesn't have the flat tool used in the video, it is possible to remove the core without it but it's very difficult. These are the steps I used. Firstly to remove the spindle, use anything to line it up (I used a pair of needle nose pliers). To release the spindle you need to push the small tab behind the spindle shield in towards the center (use vid for general idea of where). Screwdriver works fine for this. Now for the hard part. Use a flashlight to look down the hole the spindle came from and you'll see two black tabs (against and opposite the spindle shield). You'll need to simultaneously push BOTH of these tabs towards the center of the core. (in the vid after the core is removed, these are the two black metal pieces sticking up). I used pliers to push the mechanism from the first step (that was holding the spindle) out of the way and then wedged the spindle between the tab and the screw post to keep it open. Then I used two wiper tension wrenches to push the black tabs towards the center. The core should just fall right out. Hope this helps someone. If you plan on doing a few of these you should probably buy the tool or make a similar one. Removing the core was harder than picking it!

remove the cylinder without unscrewing it from the door. all you need is a hand made lock out key with the bow opened so you can insert a hefty screw driver. then file 2 cuts say 5 and 3 positions on the key making the back side flat on the cuts so the key will go in but will not slide out. now that the key is locked in insert the screw driver through the bow and using both hands pull on the driver. the springs holding the cylinder in place should bend and the lock will come out. then using a long needle nosed pliers turn the tail piece and the lock will open. have not tried it yet just an idea. sounds good though. will be trying it soon and let you know what happens.

Can you rekey an older quikset deadbolt (non smart key) with a new key from a new quikset deadbolt (smart key version)? I'm asking because I attempted to do it. I bought a kit of the 6 pins for quik set. But with the new key I'm using, the size pin I need is not in the pack of 6 I have.

something no one shows when re keying a kwikset lock. if you have to change the driver pins and springs, make sure you use the right drivers. do not use too long drivers in certain chambers or the pin cover could come off. if a different key is inserted with a high cut in the first position. it would force that driver passed the top of the bible. then you have problems with the lock. and have to be called back or have to call someone if you put it that way yourself. have a nice day.

Douglas Martin cause usually a house will have 4 or more locks and want to use same key... People want to keep their nice locks that come on their house, doesn't necessarily have to be kwikset, a lot of higher end house builders use nice fancy locks that match doors and house, people want their locks... Also you have a houses with 3 or more doors with 2 locks each, all need to take same key, so even if you bought your own locks the keys won't be the same you would have to rekey... Also their is this thing called a master key where 1 key is keyed the same as 50 or infinity different locks all keyed differently, like apartments. The office will have a Master key that will open the whole complex even though each one is keyed differently.... Look up master keying to see how we do it
