@@CAScorpio These wonderful older Cuckoo Clocks are so cool in my mind, but not knocking the clock... The Cuckoo Clock is considered a dirty clock because it is open to the dusty air. The chains pull up dust, the pendulum swings and the bird pops out. So with all that said, now you have a clock you might not know anything about how it was treated. This clock might have been sitting in a box, shelf or just hanging for a long time. The old oil and dust will start to gum up or even turn to a shellac and the clock will slowly stop working. So the clock might need a good cleaning and oiling to get it all freshened up and start working again. I do have videos and an email address below the video if you need help along the way if you want to clean and oil the clock yourself.

Yes Karen4you, a lot of things interest me and so I watch and learn, then try it for myself.

You have it right Beresfordjohn Greene. I have done this so many times, I don't even think about it anymore. Putting the chain on after the work are all back in is almost as easy, but now you have to worry about dropping the case. As for the weight and chain to keep the clock running all day, you are right about missing it by an hour or two. Just making sure you have the clock hung high enough that the weight never touches the floor will help gain a bit of time. Also, if you wanted too, you could buy another chain and lengthen the clock chain by a foot or two, but you need the ceiling high to do this so the clock will have to hang closer to the ceiling so the weight will not drop to the floor.

Someobe gave me an older Black Forset cuckoo clock that they were going to throw away the only thing was wrong with it was the chain was wound too much or stuck they had broke one part of the chain my question LOL is when you install chains do both chains need to be 50/50 and then pull the chains to wind seems like one side wants to get stuck but you left side? I sure hope you can help it would be greatly appreciated if not then I understand.

Yes Vicki, The Size of the Weight will give it away. An eight day weight is very heavy and about 1 1/2 inches or more thick. So far in my videos, I have only been working on the 1 day clocks. Later this winter, I have many 8 day clocks to clean and get running again.

I am not sure why you don't know how to hang the weight. You just hang the weight on the hook. On the video, you will see that the hook needs to be on the end of the chain that does not move when you pull on it. If you are still having a problem, let me know in more detail what you are having a problem with LaurasharkCW

@@justmike57 I had to put the chains in and only 1 chain had the hook on the end- but your saying the weights go on the side the chain doesn't move- ok that makes sense thank you

Normally the cuckoo clocks have the same size weights for the time and the cuckoo. So yes, you would buy the same size weight as you have already. Sounds like you have a project on your hands. Good Luck.

In case you need a little help. I have two different videos on the Bellow. One would be for just buying the new bellow and how I get it on the whistle box and another that I use Tyvek paper to rebuild your Bellow.

Yes you can! If you watch my other videos I kind-a explain how to do it. It's best to take both ends off the chain, turn you clock upside-down and start the chain onto the gear. Then turn the gear with a small, long screwdriver and turn your clock at the same time so the chain don't get caught up in the other gears.

Hey Michele Fagin, I do have new videos coming out, every Tuesday. Not all will be about the Cuckoo Clock, but I do show how the easiest way to put the chains back on. The easiest way is to pull the works from the cuckoo box, but you can also do it with the works in, but a little more difficult. But watching the video, you will understand more of what you are doing to get the chain back on the gear (winder). When you are getting the chain back on, it is best to take off the hook and ring on both ends of the chain, then start fresh. Also you have mentioned that you can't keep the pendulum moving. When it you start the clock, do you listen to the tick, tock sound to make sure the rhythm of the beat sounds even. And if it don't sound even, tilt your clock more to one side or the other to see if the beat becomes even sounding again. If the clock is really crooked with the right sounding beat, I have a video coming out soon on how to correct that issue also. Below the video, in the more section that describes the video, I have my email address if you would like to email me and or send pictures.

My clock cleaner will clean the chain up, but most of the time, you want to keep the old look, because the clock is an antique and you want to keep it looking nice, but old. Thanks for the suggestion Bubbles Butterfly and I will keep that in mind for other projects.

Hello there C Mill. Yes you can fix the swing of the pendulum to swing while the clock is level. I can make a video on this subject in a few days, because the next couple of days for me are very busy. If you open the back of your clock and see the wire that is touching the pendulum wire. Hold the top of that wire firmly and then with the other hand, bend the wire just a little at a time, then set the clock level and see if you bent it the right way or enough. For the close measurement, you would measure from the horseshoe looking thing, down, just outside the box. I use a putty knife that is 1 1/2" wide. If it isn't already, sharpen only one side. After taking the screw out, start working the blade along the side of the whistle box and as you are wiggling the blade, push down and when you get a little bit under the box, give it little pries to see if it will come off. Once you get it off, use a small nail to keep the whistle box from moving around when the clock is working. It sounds like the chain might have looped around other gears besides the winder. You might try taking the chain ends off one chain, pull it out of the clock and try threading the chain back into the movement. Thanks Mike I think I may have put the weights on wrong. Do the weights always go on the outside chains. I just copied the hooks as I took them off .As you look at the clock I have a pull chain then a weight then a pull then a weight.@@justmike57

Richard, it depends what your mean. If the hour is off, you can just carefully turn the hour hand to the correct time because that hand is not geared, just wedge on the shaft. If you are having a problem with the minute hand, you can take the nut off and pull the minute hand off and turn it 1/4 turns because it has a square hole. let me know if this was your problem and if you were able to fix it.

So I am thinking your chain gear isn't moving? Not sure, but it only moves one way so it will hold the weight. You would have to put the small screwdriver in where the chain rides. I wish it was that easy to tell you how, yet there are different musical clocks out there and different ways to hook the chain up. The most common one is that the chain loops straight up to the top of the clock and back down.

@@justmike57 I guess I haven't stumbled into that particular video just yet. I have a Black Forest Cuckoo Clock that I bought 30 years ago when I was in the Black Forest region of Germany. That clock has run reliably until last week when the ratcheting sprocket for the music box wore out. I have only opened this clock up in the past to clean and lubricate the gear shafts. This was the first time I ever had to take the clock apart to do a repair. That is when I realized what a mechanical marvel these clocks are. This got me to wondering about the "ins and outs" of servicing them. I jumped on to RU-vid to see what I could learn. You have some very informative videos.

I try to put out the videos that help normal people work on their own clocks, if they dare. I am busy this summer, helping my brother fix his house and making videos doing just that.
