No this isn't a torture device, enough though it may look like one. This here is "Holden's Beast" a device designed to pull hedges. We found this device on another youtube video. However, this device was not designed specifically for cedar. So will it be strong enough to pull a cedar bush? Watch and see.

I am a Pipefitter by trade. There is a tool called a Grasshopper, that uses the exact same principles for lifting/moving lengths of pipe. It would probably pull out those hedges as well (and it's made of steel and has wheels, haha). Great video! 🙂

One of the best points you’ve made is that you’re not trying to rip out the entire stamp but rather identify the root system so you can pull out the stump.
@piratepete-thetruthisforevery1
I took out a row of cedars along a 12 foot high chainlink fence along the back property line at my folks place last summer. They have a schoolyard behind them, the cedars were put there in the 1950's so the cedars were as tall or taller than the fence. (what a massive friggin' job that was...) I cut them close to the grade so wrapping a chain around them will be next to impossible to try and lever them out like you did in the video. Plus numerous cedars grew through and engulfed the chainlink fence in many spots... Along with the cedars were a few wild grape vines, HUGE ones (the thickness of your arm huge at the base) in fact the vines girth looked just like cedar trees! Where the vines came out of the ground looked like an octopus lol! The root system is approximately 2.5 to 3 feet across. The whole reason I cut everything down was because the vine was overtaking / killing the cedars and over the years the cedars were bare in spots. It didn't look too good to be honest. Well after a week or two the vines started to grow like weeds! It was now worse because there were dozens of little sucker vines growing around the roots. I tried spraying vinegar and dawn dish soap on the suckers but they keep on growing. Do you know what to do to stop / kill the vines from continuing to grow? By the end of the summer the vines were crawling up the fence 8 feet high or so. Luckily the cedars didn't have much new growth. PS my buddy from work told me about your youtube channel yesterday and I've watched a few of your videos. I must say I'm very impressed by what I've watched so far. Your knowledge on home repairs is extensive & you explain things very well in your videos. Thumbs up 👍🏼from home town eh! :) 🇨🇦

We did this with some old shrubs and hedges around the house. Albeit all were near the road or driveway. We connected the chain to the rear of our pickup and just slowly drove a few feet. Turned a several hour job into minutes!!

Archemides said "give me a big enough lever and I could move the world!"... he was born 287 bc and died 212bc at the age of 75... this my friends is not new technology, but one of the oldest still in use. Funny how anyone who uses a lever for the first time feels like Archemides did when he discovered the power of the "lever". Nice design , I made one similar to this 20 years ago to remove a tree stump, it sure makes the job easier. Good video! I'm sure it will help lots of people. ..

One suggestion: get a J-hook on the end of the chain then drive the end under the root ball with a mallet.

You know there is an easy way of doing that I removed a 35 foot long hedge that was there for 30 years, I just took my sawsall and cut the roots then took a pry bar one of these 6 foot long ones and lifted out easy pesy . Oh ya I did it by myself and I’m 5’8 and 63 years old not 6’3 and 20 something

If you would have used a smaller chain (helps it bite better) and caribeaner to make a slip knot so to speak it would have worked better

I have made a high lift farm jack into a stump remover. Very effective. Though small chain links aren't strong. I was popping 800kg chain links. Upgraded to a massive 2300kg chain and it did the trick. A load rated d-collar or similar is a must too. I

Why didn't you use a farm jack? It would have been cheaper and you can do it by yourself.

I didn't have one available. so this was actually cheaper since the material was on hand.

** I've got to start by saying I love the videos Jeff, really helpful, keep them coming. Will use a lot of the tips to do our kids bathroom and our basement at some point. I'd love to see videos about renovating a bathroom on the top floor with a dropped false ceiling above the tub (I don't know if I should expect the insulation from the attic to fall out if I rip that out to put a shower/tub in to the full height of ceiling and what you should do to prevent that as I'm not going up in the attic) ** I used a high lift farm jack from Canadian Tire (Motomaster) to pull some metal poles and T-Bar poles out of the ground that were making up our mish mash of metal fencing (diamond, frost and small holes on a grid) and also used as a support for our grape vines. I wrapped the posts with a chain and it pulled out the post with concrete usually unless the post severed from the post during pulling but you can dig around the concrete a bit if necessary and put the chain around that to pull out. If you have a wooden post you can bolt some wood onto the side of the post and use it as the lever point under the high lift jack. I used it to help pull an old fruit tree out of the ground and severed the roots with a reciprocating saw. Now I'm just wrapping up building a new wooden fence with built in mini pergola for the grape vines and it has opened up our back yard so much more.. The high lift jack has a tendency to pull forward towards the post you are pulling out so you have to pull back on it and put it against the object you are pulling if you can. I see there are SafeJack options that you can use to stabilize the farm jack but I guess you could use some 2x4 with a bolt through the farm jack top hole to do the same thing as I've seen on RU-vid. I think I'm pretty much done using the farm jack at this point so I won't be putting the 2x4s on the jack and putting it up on Kijiji as that's all I've used it for.

Because it eats up 3+ feet of backyard when a fence eats up 4 inches
