thank you I did not know what to do, the tree part on top is cut off, 12 feet up. I figured it would just dry out and then I would push it over and roll it out to the garbage man, push it over . so it seems it will still be alive with the top gone. who knows; as long as it does not fall over on the side walk. with pedestrians walking by all the time, I like the totem pole idea,

Hi Ralph, if it is a big palm and you cut it off at 12 feet it wont continue to grow. It will stay standing for years. My totem pole is still solid and standing

Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 This reminded me of the story of, THE DONKEY AND THE WELL One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn't worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So the farmer asked his neighbors to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first when the donkey realized what was happening, he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone's amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Every adversity can be turned into a stepping stone. The way to get out of the deepest well is by never giving up but by shaking yourself off and taking a step up. What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it." And that can be hard work👍💪more grease to our elbows 😆 charge be on the look out for the next lesson for they're coming. 😉

Thanks Moniquemonicat Since then I have removed a few more and incorporated the bird bath and trunk into a feature wall (another youtube) The birds have a great time in the bath. I imagine Arizona summers would be very hot, here in Perth today we are expecting 38 degrees centigrade

I just had to cut down three cocos palms that did not survive a deep freeze (in South Texas). One was 36 foot tall. Those trunks are heavy!! I'm not sure I have the energy to wrestle with trying to get the stumps out. Kudos to you for tackling such a daunting task!

Hi Cliff some of the big trunks I cut off at ground level and leave them, it just depends where they are.

@@doug_hardman , thank you! Yes, I saw that on the video. I may do that on one of mine. I will need to dig just a little to give my chainsaw some room to maneuver. For now the other two stumps are serving as low stands for potted plants, so they don't look so out of place.

Hi Gizmo Im glad I have inspired you to start digging. Consider cutting them off at ground level or other options if possible because they are a pain to dig out. Otherwise dig a little each day. I had a big stump and it took weeks to get it out.
@doug_hardman

Hi Gizmo, how are you progressing with the digging?
@gregh7457
@gregh7457 4 года назад
I' chopped down 3 big coconut trees 2 years ago and went about cutting into the stumps today and they're STILL hard as a rock. No rotting! Doing a little bit a day. I've made cuts in the top so i can try to fit a little hydraulic jack in sideways to see if i can push the stump apart. What a tiring job it looked to dig them out. i definately don't feel like doing that. You're about my age but i think i'm in worse shape
@doug_hardman
@doug_hardman 4 года назад
Yes it is hard work digging them out. You could dig down a bit and cut the stump below ground level or try banging wedges in the trunk to split it. Consider it therapeutic exercise. Good luck

lite up charcoal onto the trunk and let it simmer, it'll be gone within 10 hours.

Hi! I just bought a house with a big palm in the corner of the front lawn. I wanted to plant some flowers because it is just the tree and a ton of red mulch. I discovered I’m unable to dig because of so many roots. Will it take a long time after doing this to help with the roots in the rest of the lawn? Idk what to do
@doug_hardman
@doug_hardman 5 лет назад
Hi Blessedbeaty, palms are great but they do make a mess when they get bigger and the roots are a nuisance. Once the palm is cut down the roots will be present for many years, however they will not continue to suck all of the moisture out of the ground and they will slowly rot away. Unfortunately there is no quick fix. Use a matic and chop your way through the roots so you can plant the flowers.

Hey mate just wanted to ask, what do you do with the stumps after you’ve got them out? How do you dispose them?
@doug_hardman
@doug_hardman Год назад
Hi Adriane I usually wait untill they dry out, get the sand off and cut them in half. Load them onto a trailer and take them to the tip or put them out on green waste verge pickup. I currently have a big stump sitting where it ended up, too big to handle at the moment, working on it.

@Doug Hardman I was looking at your fence, bore water stains and easy digging soil. I have removed a few stumps by digging and chopping. Relatively easy digging until you hit a root, of course. But dig and hose to wash out the soil and see what's happening makes me appreciate where we are.
