Hi! It depends on who made the knife and how old it is. Some have pitch, some have plaster, etc.. Here is a video I did on it. Hope it helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JHw_lPJYBh8.htmlsi=c9WbE0ISxkS1RMxP

Is the silver solder worth saving? What do you think the silver content is in it?
@JustJani
@JustJani Год назад
I have no idea what the silver content is or if it’s worth keeping. I would have to do some research on that.

What is used on many of the hollow handle butter knives and hollow handle serving pieces is a lead solder which is lead and tin.

How come all your handles have solder in them? All my handles have plaster in them, or mixer of sand and some sort of resin/wax that crumbles when smashed with hammer. Some has rubber resin material.

Mine only have solder where it is held onto the blade. Further up inside I have had plaster, pitch, etc.. Did you heat yours to remove the blade or just cut it off? Maybe you bypassed the solder.

@@JustJani I hammered them out. And then had to scrap out the inserts. Too much work!!! Like almost 10 min per knife. I am thinking about buying a bandsaw and cutting them out. Or maybe a dremel. But bandsaw would be easier.
@JustJani
@JustJani 9 месяцев назад
It only takes a minute to heat them enough to melt the solder, but it can be messy, too. I’ve cut them with a band saw too. Just depends on what you’re making.

@@JustJani I think bandsaw might be the best option. Just scrapping for $. No one buys sterling flatware for use anymore. They only buy the newest Iphones. Too bad such nice cutlery have to get destroyed.
@JustJani

@Macky1101 I see. Sell it to flatware jewelry makers! There are lots of Facebook groups that have ppl who want it. I know some will buy as much as they can fit in their car! Also, there’s a sculptor you should check out. I think his are all sterling. Jean Marie Parache instagram.com/jmp.creations?igshid=YTQwZjQ0NmI0OA==

Thank you! Yes, you can make pens, seem rippers, wine bottle stoppers, bottle openers, crochet hooks, etc.. Soon I will be carrying supplies on my website, justjani.com, to make these items. Save your knife blades, too! You can make feathers with them!

What do you use the full handle for? I’m thinking you still have to cut them to make pens or seam rippers. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🙏
@JustJani
@JustJani Год назад
Hi! I use the shorter handles for pens, seam rippers, bud vases, and pizza cutters and the long handles are good for bracelet buddy's, roach clips, and letter openers.

So what do you do if there's pine tar in the handle? I'm dying to know what you did with that one. Is it possible to remove the handle or do you just not bother?
@JustJani
@JustJani Год назад
It really depends on the pine tar. I’ve had some that I’ve gotten enough out just by using a low flame. I’ve had others crack.🤷🏼‍♀️

Does this damage the silverplate? - Have you worked with any Reed & Barton to know what they used in their handles?
@JustJani
@JustJani Год назад
Yes, it can damage the silver plate if you get it too hot. I have not had the pleasure of working with Reed & Barton but I think I saw somewhere that they are filled with epoxy. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

I remove them outside. Clamp the handle loosely in the vice. Heat and the blade falls.
