How to remove a seized brake drum or rotor with threaded bolt holes. Simply find 1 or 2 metric bolts with 10X1.25 threading insert them in the threaded holes on the brake drum or rotor and use some force with preferably a long rachet and socket or power tool with socket. Run them in evenly until it breaks free of the hub and you should be in business. If you live in snow climates your drum could also be stuck because A lip of rust has grown on the big part inside of the drum preventing the shoes from crossing the face of the drum when you go to pull it off and locking the drum in place. This car is a 2006 Toyota Corolla most other Asian vehicles, modern day usdm vehicles and German cars have threaded holes in the brake discs and drums.

The 12mm "bolt" he mentioned was the SOCKET SIZE, not the bolt. Use an 8mm x 1.25mm. I went with a 50mm length with the threads going to the bottom of the head. I hope this helps.

I have now seen this exact size on two videos. My drum brakes won't come off no matter how hard I hit it. And I knew I needed a bolt to open it but never could find the right size till now. Thanks so much.

...and if it doesn't work use a bigger hammer! Jokes aside this worked perfectly on my 1998 Astra after replacing the rear brakes shoes and skimming the drum. You saved me.. probably not a lot in your currency but as a pensioner it meant a lot to me.

so a lot of brake drums do not have that threaded hole, so in order to take them off, first back off the brake shoes, with the adjuster tool, at least 10 times, then get heat and heat up the area around the bolts, then spray, then heat again, do this 3 times, then pound around with a 20 pd sledge, they do come off

Excellent work Elton. I'm pulling my hair out, trying to get the rear drum of my car.😱😭 I'll find a bolt now and have a go at that. Their is only 1 hole in my drum though.

With wheel on and loose lug nuts, get wheel spinning and slam on brakes. This will break rust between hub and drum, may need to back off brake shoes. Works every time

After the drum is free can I just bleed the brakes and get them working again. My drums are seized now. The shoes and everything should still be fine. My car had been sitting for 3 years.

What do I do if those 2 holes are stripped out? I tried doing that, but the holes just stripped right away.
@eltonq
@eltonq 5 лет назад
The Happy Greek unfortunately you will have to hammer it off with a chisel or something similar from the other side (or just the hammer if you can get to the lip of the drum to beat it off) needless to say you will definitely need a new drum.
@junzilla13
@junzilla13 3 года назад
What do you do if the bolts are stripped on the drum side and it's stuck on one side of the pad
@eltonq
@eltonq 3 года назад
You’ll end up having to hammer it off from the inner lip which will likely destroy the hardware holding the shoes to the plate. No worries as you can normally buy a hardware kit for pretty cheap. May as well replace the drum as well.
@junzilla13
@junzilla13 3 года назад
@@eltonq I used a gear puller and pulled the thing out. It destroyed everything inside including the wheel cylinder. Replaced everything except parking brake and backing plate.

Mine has 2 philips head screws where you put the bolts to remove it but those too are seized and when I tried to remove them i started ruining the head with the screwdriver so I stopped. I banged the rotor with a hammer for a while but i just dented the metal and it still wouldn't give so I gave up there as well. Also I'm taking the drum apart because the hand brake got stuck. I figure the shoes are pressing up against the drum so that makes it even harder to take apart. Any advice?
