If you're looking to remove your truck bed or cab without the help of others, this video is for you! I show you how to build a sturdy and reliable removal tool using common materials and tools. I also provide a detailed guide on how to assemble the tool and use it to remove the bed from an old chassis. You'll also see how I check the fit and alignment of the bed on a new chassis. Subscribe to my channel for more DIY automotive content.
Materials:
-2" x 2" x 4' steel tube with .120" wall thickness
-Four pieces of 1 5/16" x 1 5/16" x 2' steel tube with .120" wall thickness
-Two pieces of 2" x 2" x 3/16" plate steel
-One piece of 4" x 4" x 3/16" plate steel
-Two pieces of triangle-shaped plate steel measuring 6" wide x 3" tall and with 3/16" thickness
-Two bolts, either 3/8" or M10 in size
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Plate Steel
-Drill a hole in the center of one of the 2" x 2" x 3/16" plate steel pieces and tap it to fit the bolts you are using (3/8" or M10).
-Drill a hole in the triangle-shaped plate steel, about 1.5" down from the top of the triangle, using a 5/8" drill bit.
Note: Hole placement may vary based on the engine hoist you plan to use.
Step 2: Determine Hoist Location
-Mark the center of the 2" x 2" x 4' steel tube.
-Tack the 4" x 4" x 3/16" plate steel to the center of the 2" x 2" x 4' steel tube.
-Center and tack the two 6" wide x 3" tall triangle-shaped plate steel pieces above the edges of the 4" x 4" plate steel, running parallel to the square stock. Ensure that there is enough room for your engine hoist to fit between these plates. If not, readjust until it fits.
-Once you have the engine hoist in place, weld the triangle-shaped plate steel to the square base.
-Finally, weld the square base to the square stock.
Step 3: Install Set Screws
-Place the 2" x 2" plate steel flush at both ends of the 2" x 2" x 4' square stock, and mark the center of the tapped hole on the square stock. This should be on the same plane as your hoist location.
-Drill a hole larger than the bolt into the top of the square stock.
-Place the 2" x 2" plate steel flush at both ends of the square stock and tack it into place, then do the final weld.
-Thread in the bolts a few turns.
Step 4: Build Extendable Arms
-Mark the center of the remaining smaller square stock both lengthwise and widthwise.
-Place the two pieces of smaller square stock in a "T" shape, lining up the center points and tack them. Note that one piece should be on top of the other.
-Repeat for the other side.
-Do the final weld.
-Insert the extendable arms into the larger square stock. The perpendicular pieces of square stock on the arms should be on the same plane as the engine hoist location and set screws.
If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I will do my best to better describe!

I made simple cross beam, lengthened boom to clear lifting cylinder. While lifting bed up place a cinder block in bed sliding it in position to get the correct pitch by altering the center of gravity. One other suggestion, get an old wooden kitchen table, mount 4 swivel casters on tabletop corners. Now flip table over with legs pointing up, lower pickup bed on legs. Bed will now be very easy to roll around shop.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will look into it! I have done similar with pallets and casters!

Two ratchet straps hooked to form an X work just fine as well, as long as the hoist has enough reach. Only $9.97 for a 4-pack for 500lb straps at Home Depot.

I thought about doing that but this seemed safer. Also got multiple use for moving the cab and taking the hood on and off!

Reminds me of the one Stacey David's gearz, he bought bed lift rotating from a company price is 1800. This iss very cool awesome, save money plus learn how to weld too.

Holy cow 1800! I bought my welder and the supplies for this for a few hundred less! that is crazy! It was a good welding project after not having welded for a few years!

Great video. Would probably be a lot easier with a short box. Very impressed with your shop lighting, is this from your first video? Please tell more about it, couldn’t find what type/ brand/ manufacturer of the lights actually are. Thanks.

Thanks! I am slowly getting better at filming and editing. Who knew it was such a skill haha! Yes the lighting is from the first video. These are Amico canless LED lights. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NSX2Y1B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) Worth noting I have 3 that flicker of 48. I have checked my wiring and it seems like it has a good connection so i suspect the light itself. These are a fraction of the price you would pay at Lowes/Home Depot so I still think it is a good deal! You can also adjust the color of the light too. in the shop I prefer a whiter light (6000K) and in my house I prefer something more yellow (3000K). I bought more than I needed for my shop and used them inside my house too. Let me know if you have more questions!

@@barnbuiltbeaters thank you! What is the spacing roughly between the lights? Did you calculate a plan? And are the junction boxes the ones that came with the lights? My shop is still needing drywall and insulation. 24x40, my ceiling is 10 ft, is yours also?
@barnbuiltbeaters
@barnbuiltbeaters Год назад
@@hvspeed6102 I dont know the spacing exactly anymore sorry. Here is the best I can yell you. My shop is 28'x28'x10'. I have 6 rows of lights divided between 3 switches with about 8 lights per row. All the perimeter lights (closest to the wall) are 2' away from the wall. This would make about 6ft between each row and about 3 ft between each light. I did create a plan. I use my CAD modeling software for the layout and did what I thought was best. -I purposely spaced the lights out 2' from the wall so light would shine on the bench rather than myself casting a shadow if it was out further. - i measured the width of my truck and space the lights out a bit wider. My thinking was it may light up the wheel wells better or the underside if i am working there as otherwise the truck would block it. My advice would be to determine where you will be working in your garage and where that light needs to be to best light up the space and not cast shadows. The junction boxes did come with the lights too

It is a YesWelder Ct2050. It does AC/DC TIG, Plasma with built in compressor, has HF start, Pulse TIG, and dual voltage. Lots of nice features typically found on higher end machines but at a fraction of the price. Took a risk but absolutely love it and have convince a few friends to buy YesWelder's MIG machines as well. Honestly seems almost as nice as my old machine, a Miller 210 Syncrowave that I sold to found my shop build. Check them out!

Which engine hoist is this? 1 Ton or 2 Ton?
@barnbuiltbeaters
@barnbuiltbeaters 5 месяцев назад
This is a Dragway Tools 2 Ton Hoist. I bought it because it was one of the highest lifting hoists out there. It's great I'd buy it again!

Couldn’t you come In from the side?
@barnbuiltbeaters
@barnbuiltbeaters Год назад
Do you mean pick up the bed from the side rather than the back? You could do that for sure. However, I dont think my hoist goes up high enough. The size of my shop might make it difficult to move the hoist around that way and if you spun the bed 180 around while lifted it would be in the wrong orientation to set on the frame.

That actually isn't a bad idea! I have an Etsy shop where I have sold the digital files (3D print) to my Wheel and Tire Fitment Tool. I could sell this too. Would you be interested in the plans or just the physical tool?

That would depend on the price, very similar one is being sold for 200
