How to Remove a Water Heater

In this video home renovation brothers Dave and Rich show how to remove a water heater. To remove a hot water heater, we first had to disconnect the various supplies to the water heater. We turned off the burner. Then we turned off the gas supply and the cold water supply to the water heater. Then it was necessary to lighten the weight of the gas hot water heater by draining the water. To do this we connected a garden hose to the drain spigot of the water heater. Without removing the water, the gas hot water heater would simply be too heavy to safely move. Once the water is drained from the water heater, it is dramatically easier to move.
Removing a hot water heater can be intimidating. That is why it is important that before attempting to take this DIY removal of a water heater on, you should be fully familiar and comfortable with each aspect of the project.
Knowing how to remove a water heater is a valuable skill. Once your water heater starts leaking you are faced with removing the water heater yourself or calling a plumber. Sometimes waiting for a plumber to arrive to address your leaking water heater might just mean you are left with 40 or more gallons of water on the floor.
The main tools needed to remove a water heater are a couple of plumbers wrenches or similar plus a garden hose.
In our next video we will show you how to install a new hot water heater.
Hope this helps!

I bought this water heater ru-vid.comUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.

Looks like a straightforward, simple process. I've got a gas water heater, manufacturer told me return to store for exchange. A local plumbing company wants to charge me $1100 to remove, take to store and pickup new one. 😳😳😳 I called store, they'll give me store credit. I'll upgrade water heater, pay the difference and have them install it!!! Thank you for the video!!!

First time watcher. Excellent video. My hot water just went out. Had a big leak at the pressure relief valve. The unit is over 9 yrs old. Since we have been here it hasn't been changed. My dad said I could probly fix it but he likes to rig things. I'm waiting on the landlord to send a contract to my friend for the work. When he does, I'm going to drain the water for him and help him. He will pay me for the help. But if he gives the job to someone else I'm not touching it. I turned off the gas + water only.

@Housebarons
@Housebarons Год назад
Hey Ellie, The gas line can be closed with a threaded plug - just ask at your big box home store or local hardware store. Easily available. Use pipe thread or pipe paste around the threads before screwing in the plug. Water pipes have a little more variety. Ask about a “ sharkbite “ cap for the water line. Sharkbite fittings work on pex, copper and pvc. Thx for watching.

In my garage I have an 16 1/2 inch metal stand, live in Alaska and has hard core codes. Why does yours sit on the floor? Old house code? New hot water heater do you need to follow new codes. Gas in side house is not good.

@Housebarons
@Housebarons Год назад
Hey John, We are in the USA. By code, we need the first 18 inches of water pipe at the top of the water heater to be metal pipe. After that, it could be pex if you wanted to use a more flexible piping material. Typically, I would use solid copper off the top of the water heater. Thx for watching.

What can i do if the plastic drain valve is old/brittle and i cant turn it with a screwdriver because its breaking apart? Any help is appreciated. Is there another way to empty the tank?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 4 года назад
Hey Rafael, Wow. That’s a pain! I know that in theory, you can replace a bad drain valve on full water heater by using an adjustable wrench or plumbers wrench and unscrew the entire drain valve. The secret to this method is to close all the faucets in the house. I’d also close the water supply into the tank. That will act as a kind of a finger over the end of a straw situation. It creates a vacuum keeping the water from gushing out. You could then unscrew the old drain valve - provided it didn’t crumple, and screw in a new one which could be used to properly drain the water. (Or) If it is to remove it permanently - maybe research a siphon. I’d see online if anyone else has done that w/success. I’m not sure about internal structure of the water heater. What I was wondering was -could you cut both the lines ( hot and cold after the water heater is deactivated and cooled down), and feed a long poly tube into the water heater and siphon the water out of the top? I have never had that issue so I’m just thinking on the fly. Let us know if you have success. We are curious what you do. Thx for the question and thx for watching!
@rafe.7907
@rafe.7907 4 года назад
HouseBarons Thank you for the reply. I will be trying these methods in the next week or two. I will report back with how it goes. It will take some planning in case all hell breaks loose as its in the house. I saw a video where a guy removed the valve mechanism from the valve in order to poke at the debri while trying to empty it. I might try that first but while also using your vacuum method. Either way ill post an update. Thank you for your suggestions and information!
@rafe.7907
@rafe.7907 4 года назад
@HouseBarons , It got fixed a few days before I planned. I was in bed and I heard “bloooop bloooop”. I ran over to it and the rust along the side had caused it to start leaking. I ran outside, grabbed the hose and put it on the drain valve. Then I removed the broken valve body and it started flowing out the hose AND out the hole where the valve was. The outside seemed threaded similar to the hose so i ran to the garage and grabbed a hose bib and screwed it on to stop the sprinkler i had created. Once the flow slowed down I undid the inlet and outlets up top and it emptied out. There still seems to be more in there but its not the 50 gallons that kept me from attempting to remove the rusty pos all year.

ya where I’m from all those flex lines are against code.. just seeing them makes me cringe.. and you need vacuum breaker, not having one is cutting the life span of the tank! Also that smoke is not screwed together ? And is there A straight pipe anywhere? And it’s good you did it yourself but I’d be worried about someone doing this. This should be professionally installed::yes what you got there will work but I’d very upset and worried if that was done like that at my house... just always worry with RU-vid telling people to play with gas lines especially ....
