I just cleaned the rocks/coral pieces in my 125 gallon mbuna tank. In the past I have used bleach and I have noticed that while it does an excellent job at restoring the bright white to the coral pieces it also does compromise the strength of the coral and will cause it to become very brittle after several treatments. With that being said, I have been putting my green algae coated coral in a very large pot on the stove top and boiling them. You will notice that the water starts turning green as the water boils. After 15 minutes or so I pour the water out, let the coral cool for a few minutes before adding clean water to the pot (because you don't want to pour cold tap water on hot coral...it will become brittle and possibly crack!) refill the pot and boil again. Depending on how bad the algae growth is you may find yourself rinsing and repeating a few times but your coral pieces will end up looking much better and you can put them back in your tank the same day because no chemicals were used. This method is definitely more labor intensive than the bleach method however its a great way to go when you want to preserve the structural integrity of your corals and get them back in the tank the same day. Thanks for all your videos, I have definitely learned a lot from them.

I soak the rocks in bleach water for an hour or so followed by a thorough rinsing with fresh water followed by a good soaking with new water with a heavy dose of prime for 30 minutes. The prime will neutralize the remaining chlorine. I've done this for years and have never lost a fish. After doing a final rinse and placing the rocks back in the tank I add a dose of prime into the entire tank.

@fugley

Seachem Prime is a concentrated de-chlorinater. It safely removes chlorine from water to effectively neutralize any ill effects to the fish. After using bleach to clean the rocks of algae, Prime will render the rocks safe to return to the tank when used in a higher concentration than normal tap water. I hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your tip. I use a 5-day treatment when too much algae get on the decor. 1 day in bleach solution, rinse, 2 days in a water with Seachem Prime, rinse, 2 days to air dry rocks. Put them back in the aquarium. So far, the fish survived after putting decor back in the aquarium. My problem is more with preventing the algae buildup.

Steel brush and clean with aquarium water in bucket and add back to tank. It's only going to get algea again anyways. Better to be proactive and keep up with frequent water changes and watch the balance of lighting in aquarium. Especially with cichlids. I stay far from bleach.....unless I'm doing a new set up with used media. And I rinse and soak in seachem safe. Lol Cheers

Not being a grumpy old goat, but, bleach is really bad for getting that sparkling clean look (which isn't natural, anyway). ANd just to be clear, bleach is NOT ammonia..it is sodium hypochlorite in water solution. If you MUST use bleach, after rinsing several times with running water, let it sit outside in the air for a day or two in sun if you can. If you can detect ANY scent of bleach, PLEASE put your pieces in a solution of 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide (avail in the cleaning aisles of most grocery stores) to 3 to 5 parts water. Hydrogen peroxide is a very good bleach neutralizer and is relatively inexpensive. Be sure you know if you are cleaning real rocks whether or not they will react to the ingredients in cleaning solutions. In fact, hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean aquarium items because it is very good at killing algae and is very safe to use (but don't pour it into the aquarium....that could be bad).... Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water. I prefer it to bleach even if you have to do a little scrubbing. Be well. Treat grumpy old goats kindly....they actually know a thing or three.
