I created this video to explain to people how to remove an air lock in a radiator or central heating system, it's very straight forward and doesn't necessarily need an engineer to visit.
Your first step is to turn off all the radiators on the central heating system, except for the radiator that you suspect has an air lock. You do this by turning the radiator valve or thermostatic valve clockwise.
If you have a hot water cylinder you will also need to turn the hot water off, so that the central heating pump can concentrate on just the radiators.
Turn your heating on, and the pump has no alternative than to force the water to the radiator that has an air lock. Once an air lock has been released you should hear a gurgling sound or a glugging sound. This indicates that the air lock has been released.
You will need to release the air from radiator using a vent key, vent locations can be found on either the left or the right hand side, but can also be hidden on the back of the radiator.
If the air lock from the radiator has been released you need to wait until both central heating pipes are hot, and relatively close in temperature.
Your final step is to turn on all the radiators on the central heating system, and check to see if they are all getting hot.
Hopefully you're all sorted now, and you have just saved yourself a call out charge.
I hope you like the video, thanks for watching.

One cold radiator - following the replacement of 9 radiators. I was just about to take the problem radiator and valves off to see if the TRV was faulty and saw your video. Your approach and logic makes epic sense and I turned off all the rads less one in the hall (just in case the troublesome radiator valve had failed - didn't want to stress the boiler). The extra system pressure on the troublesome radiator was enough to move the massive air lock and I was able to bleed the air away. I've been DIY plumbing for a few years now but this is a tip I'll remember and pass on with huge thanks :)

Life saver this my friend. I'm fitting a new bathroom in my house and pulled a skirting board up, and the original builders have nailed the board on straight through a pipe! I managed to hammer the concrete out and expose the pipe and fit a straight speedfit connector. This was the final step to get everything back to normal!

Many thanks for this, after isolating the other radiators and turning the heating on the airlock had gone in 2 min and I've now got heating in half the house which was cold previously. Wife is happy so great success!!

I've recently had a new boiler fitted and I now have two radiators that very slowly only get hot at the top (they previously got hot all over very quickly). The valves on either side of the radiator are piping hot so the water is definitely reaching them. Is this a sign of an air lock?

Can you clarify what you mean by turn off the hot water @ 1:00 ? The subs then say "it's important to turn the hot water on" - I'm confused by this bit. Thanks
@We-Are-FlowState
@We-Are-FlowState Год назад
Sorry that it’s not clear John. This applies to systems where you have a hot water cylinder, you need to turn the hot water off at the timer/programmer to ensure a valve is in the closed position which then forces water to the heating side of the system. If you don’t have a hot water tank then don’t worry about this step.

I’ve got a rad (a few actually) that’s cold in the middle and towards the bottom again in the middle) I took them off and flushed them out outside (jet washer) but it’s still cold in the middle,(not the top) do you think that could be an airlock ...(downstairs rads) cheers arkid.
@Hydroheat
@Hydroheat 3 года назад
Hi Joel.. Depends really is the hot water going to your radiators going in from one side, through the rad and then back again? If both pipes either side are similar temperatures then that can indicate that there is circulation. If one's a lot cooler then that indicates there is a flow issue. So either an air lock, a blockage or a restriction. If all looks good there then it could be that the water is passing through the radiator too quick in which case turning the lockshield valve down a few turns will slow the speed down giving it more time to hang around in the radiator and spread it's heat 😊

Please can you advice me , recently we had a new pressure boiler fitted and ever since then we can hear the pipes under the floor boards and walls tapping / rattling and banging noises . I have gone round to each radiator to see if there’s was air in them and some did have a lot of air and some didn’t , I then switched boiler back on and I have noticed the tapping/rattling/banging noise isn’t as loud but it’s still there and disturbs us during the night and mornings , do you know what the issue can be? Our old boiler was fine for 14 years with no noises whatsoever. I’ve read ppl saying there could be air in the boiler system but I haven’t found any video on RU-vid that shows how to remove air from a pressure boiler apart from Americans that have a different set up as here in UK. Please help 🙏🏼

@Hydroheat
@Hydroheat 5 лет назад
Hi Ryan, typically no, if there is no circulation to your new radiator then it's probably my just air. You should be ok turning just one side off. If you still have issues when you open the valves back up then you could have a balancing issue, your pump may be weaker than it used to be. Good luck
@jbaillie01
@jbaillie01 5 лет назад
Would you turn off both ends of the rad. You said either thermostatic or lock Sheild but that rad including mine have both so are we shutting both sides off
@Hydroheat
@Hydroheat 5 лет назад
Ones enough to cut off the flow to force the pump to push elsewhere. However if all of your lockshields are in the fully open position then you will need to shut all your lockshields down (balance the system) to help for e things round more equally

I have an oil fired system and when i switch the heating on i get an loud banging or hammer noise coming from the pipes beside the hot tank, the pipes lead up the stairs, that where the noise is coming from. I have a feeling that i have a massive air lock and I have bled the radiators upstairs and i do get a bit of air and after a while the banging stops. But the next time i switch the heating on it does the same thing again... any ideas or help would be great
@Hydroheat
@Hydroheat 6 лет назад
Sounds as though you have a design issue which is pulling air into the system. You'll need a heating engineer to come in and look at whats going on. Many thanks.

If you turn all rads off except the offending one, and it turns out it’s blocked with sludge and not an airlock, could this cause a problem? As the pressure would be building with nowhere to go?
@jamiecureton6110
@jamiecureton6110 6 лет назад
Hi Nafehere, over a long period of time this could cause an issue to your pump yes, if it's an air lock then the problem should resolve itself within a couple of minutes, if it doesn't it's wise to open your other radiators again. I wouldn't recommend forcing it over a period of time it's not ideal, but I've come across pumps which have been under stress for a long time and still have a lot of life left in them, they're quite robust.
