I normally don't leave comments but I tried everything else RU-vid had to offer and this is what did it. This and a 4lb sledgehammer after 10 hits or so but I would have had to put my truck in the shop without this tip. Thanks a lot.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I watched other videos and tried what they did, plus I already used the PB Blaster, like you did. After watching this, I already had what I needed in my garage, I did the same thing you did, and within 15 minutes I had the fan off. Thanks again for saving me a lot of time and frustration.
Great tip!! I have already removed the pump with the fan attached, so I'm going to try to use this idea with the wire around the pump somewhere. Thanks bud!
Good Morning Mr. Gibson: My name is Victor Cruz and I am a veteran of the United States Army. I saw your video on how to remove the fan of the 2001 through 2004 Chevy Tahoe, I am changing the water pump and I have to remove the fan on a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. thank for the input, I am studying Mechanics myself because I want to be ASCE Master Mechanic!
You can use a strap wrench that you can buy at the plumbing department usually in any store. That and a big adjustable wrench. The strap will probably be to small to go around the pulley. So what i did i used the strap from a ratchet strap and used that instead. You can use this method when the pump is on or off the vehicle. Just another tip for you backyard mechanics.
I put the last clutch on with neversieze, I cannot believe I cannot budge it right now.....I will see if my 2001 has holes in it. Thanks for the video!
Thnx4 this. Had no wire so put the closed end of a #10 wrench on one of the bolts and the open end I put a large screwdriver thru it and onto the engine block in a little nook and it came right off.
Thanks… helped me out alot. Took my son and I for the job. Used a lock nut wrench on nuts on the pulley. I held lock nut wrench in place so pulley would not move while my son took some big wacks on the wrench on the fan clutch nut… after four good wacks, fan clutch nut came loose.
Excellent idea I was trying to figure some way to keep the pulley from turning when when taking the fan off this did work for me Thanks for the video!!
By far the best method for me! Tried the duck tape wratch strap method, no dice. There was to much play with the strap. The wire doesn't give as much slack. One wire is all it took. Thank you so much for posting! Ur right, All these videos on u tube make it look so easy but it's not. Thank you again! Just to add some details on my job, i used same tools in this video, 12 inch crescent wrench( think that's the name ) just long enough to get over the fan blades so I could get a good whack with the hammer. In my case the nut was 36mm. I used some pb blaster but heard to be careful not to get it on the pulley surface cause it could cause the belt to slip maybe, idk. Got real discouraged when the advanced auto store guy told me it was reverse thread or opposite turn to loosen. That is true for some vehicles, but had to ignore him, in my case. Btw, the free store rental tools might have worked if I had done the wire method first but went and bought the crescent wrench because I felt it had more bit on the nut (36mm) the store tools are thin but they might of worked.
Like where your mind is at. I tried putting bolts through the whole hoping to stop the turning which didn’t work. Had some exact wire like that got from work hoping I find a use for someday. Now it did. Fan is off. Good deal. Thanks for the tip.
As far as catching the pulley to remove fan simply stick a allen key in one of the 4 holes this will catch the back side of the pump and allow leverage.
If you take the fan and pulley completely off in one piece it will be easier to access the holes set the fan on the ground for leverage put the allen key in the back of pulley that the fan is attached too.
@@brandonlanpher7941 Hey thanks for the quick reply, after I made the comment I figured it out. I'm a lil slow lmao. But I got the allen keys behind it and went to take it off and just sheered the allen keys. I started making a custom piece to take it apart and decided to simply tolerate the fan being on for now. This is on a swapped vehicle, do the fan clutches go bad often?
@@lucysmith4242 I am sorry you did not have any luck with the Fan I'd find something harder than the allen key if possible. However as far as fan clutch replacement for a Chevy pickup the typical recommended interval is 140,000 miles however I've seen trucks with 200,000+ miles with original equipment still functioning.
That metal wire trick didn't work me. It scuffed my pulley and ate some of my belt. I got tired, removed the wire, put the wrench on and swinged like a golf club. It came loose!
I didt have any of that heavy wire and doubled up tie wire was breaking so out of desperation I put the whole assembly in my 5" Olympia bench vise which was barely big enough to clamp the water pump body and pinch the pulley so that it wouldn't turn. Fan came right off then.
