Octane booster REDUCES the flammability of the fuel, not the other way. It's purpose is to keep the fuel from igniting too soon, before the spark. There are quick start additives that increase flammability. Also, if that fuel had 10% ethanol, it should have shrunk by half a liter, but it only shrunk by a quarter liter, so I don't think you got it all; either that or it didn't really have 10%.

I am an ASE Master Certified Automobile Technician and I have been trained on how to measure ethanol in fuel and what it does to the fuel. In testing we use coolant, but you can use alcohol (with food coloring) and you will have something that will burn after you siphon it off. Calculate what the 10% will be and use that much alcohol to remove the ethanol from the fuel. It makes it easier to see when the process is finished. You are correct to use an octane booster because ethanol is an octane booster and when you remove it the octane rating of the petrol will drop possibly causing detonation. However you have that "flammability" thing backwards. One more thing. I doubt that it is the ethanol itself that is destroying the rubber o-rings and gaskets. As far as rust goes, you're spot on when the equipment is used once a week and has time to absorb moisture out of the air, and I suspect it is that water that is degrading paper gaskets and rusting pinholes in floats on carburetors. On stuff that is used daily, as you noted, or on a car that has a tank that is moisture controlled, the ethanol does not cause a rusting problem. Cars also have fuel filters that won't pass water so their injectors don't rust up.

I have had fits every year that I pull out my tiller, my pressure washer and my lawn mower. I threw the weed whacker away it gave such fits and bought a battery EGO one that is brilliant. I bought new carbs for them one year, but still the next year, filled with gunk. At the beginning of covid, I did this removal process, drained all my tools and filled with this ethanol free fuel. This year I pulled everything out, and like magic, they all started right up and ran perfect. I personally just start with premium fuel, so after the ethanol removal, I have regular fuel. I then ad some Stabil and I think it will store for years. Now 1 1/2 years later, the fuel I still have left over looks and a eels just like new. And yes, you can just drain all your tools and then run them dry, but this is easier. I will never put ethanol fuel in a small engine ever again.

Just add Stabil to the fuel as soon as you get it. I have only ever had one fuel related problem and that was a generator that I decided to read the instructions on and drain the fuel after use. Next time I needed it I had to remove the carb and clean the varnish out for it to run . Ever since then I never shut the fuel off to the generator and it fires up on the second pull even after sitting for over 2 years. My riding mower is over 15 years old with no carburetor problems along with my push mower, weed eater and chainsaw.

Just a tip for pouring the de-ionised water, it works the same for fuel and oil cans, is to pour the bottle on its side, the glugging comes from air getting trapped in the handle part, so ifyou get that level, you can stop the surging of the flow, and make it pour nice and smoothly. Good video by the way, really enjoyed it, learned something today Cheers, keep it up!
@AndrewN75
@AndrewN75 2 года назад
The glugging comes from having to let air in to replace the contents coming out. I completely invert the container so the outlet is at the top, but sideways works, too.

Weee are fortunate to have a couple stations that still sell hytest ethanol-free fuel. Its cost is about 15% more. But you showed a very nice trick for those who don't have an option. The gunk is a problem. That's why you never store your vehicles over the winter with fuel in them. The other trouble is ethanol tends to dry out gaskets and diaphragms. A very small amount of two-stroke oil can go a long way in a 4-stroke engine to offset some of those effects.

@robthegardener9631
@robthegardener9631 2 года назад
At £20 for 5 litres I reckon using Aspen all the time is just as expensive as paying for a carburettor repair every couple of years. However, as compromise I'll do most of the job with ordinary petrol but then I empty the tank and finish it with about 100 ml of Aspen. That way the ethanol should be flushed out so it's not sitting in the carburettor causing damage between use.

Nice one! I remember seeing another youtuber who used a water cooler bottle for this purpose, but he had fitted a tap to the bottom somehow. As it narrowed down to a neck at the bottom it was easier to see the division between the petrol and the water/ethanol.

I got my lawnmower's manufacturer (Challenge) to confirm that it will accept 10% ethanol. Beside that, what I usually do is put in just enough fuel to cut the grass and then leave the machine idling until the fuel runs out, so I never leave unused fuel sitting around in its tank/carburettor. The small amount left when the engine stops soon evaporates leaving a dry system. I started doing this year's ago to stop dried up fuel forming gum etc. to clog up the jets, but it should also mean that the plastic seals are only exposed to the ethanol for a few hours per year.

Yeah....Yamaha told me E5 fuel doesn't harm their motorcycles (bullshit). E5 made my tank porous until I had loads of tell-tale air bubbles in the paint finish all over the tank and the tank had slightly distorted too.....looked like someone with smallpox !!! So don't believe the manufacturers, they don't want any responsibility. Likewise the Government says Ethanol fuel is no problem too.....it's all a lie Ethanol is an extremely inefficient fuel you burn more of it to get power out, so your overall consumption increases and fuel economy drops....not very eco friendly then !! Just means you get sold a dodgy watered down fuel more expensively with extra servicing costs. We are being taken for a ride.....literally. Simply more profit for every one involved other than the end user.

Lucas booster contains naptha (petroleum) 60-80% and MMT. Managanese derived chemical similar to Lead from back in the day. Just like Lead, MMT leaves residue on spark plugs and will eventually clog catalytic converters on vehicles. The residue will be reddish orange, lead was yellow. Easiest way to find out what octane booster brands contain is through a free SDS safety data sheet.

Hi mick. I emailed esso a month ago and this is the response i got: 'The majority of our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). Legislation requires us to place these E5 labels on pumps that dispense unleaded petrol with ‘up to 5% ethanol’, including those that contain no ethanol, which is why we display them on our Synergy Supreme+ 99 pumps' They are the only company to still sell ethanol free fuel -the premium unleaded. I mailed all the other big companies and they are putting 5% in their premium As a side issue you could avoid the octane booster by starting off with a high octane E5 97ron premium unleaded and by the time you take the ethanol out the octane drops to 95ron. The premium you pay for the 97ron fuel is more than covered by the extra 5% petrol you are left with Great clear vid

Ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline and gives a net boost to the fuel's octane. Octane rating of fuel is not a measure of how flammable the fuel is though. In fact, it is more related to its ability to resist knock or detonation. The higher an octane rating, the more STABLE the fuel is and the better it avoids detonation. The octane index is a rating in which the fuel being measure is compared against pure octane. (Octane is no longer actually used as a fuel.) An average octane rating of 100 means the fuel being measured behaves exactly the same as Octane would in resisting detonation. Many Octane boosters could just be ethanol since ethanol does boost the octane of gasoline. I am not sure what Lucas uses in their fuel booster. But before I would add it to the gas you just "de-ehtanoled", I would make sure it does not have ethanol in it.

Very interesting video! Thanks. We can still buy ethanol-free gasoline here in the States but it's quite expensive. I use it in my small motors. Another thing that appears to work regarding the degradation of fuel in carburetors (but I can't explain why) is the addition of 2-stroke oil. I've got a McCulloch ProMac 10-10 chain saw that I've always burned regular 'pump' fueI in (purchased new in 1973) that, even after the inclusion of E10 -15 fuel, has always started and run well after long periods of inactivity. I use a 40/1 or 50/1 gas/oil mix. I'm tempted to try adding a bit of 2-stroke oil to the tank of my Kawasaki KLR 650 before I 'put it to bed' for the winter and see if it works on the bike as well.

Great vlog, mate, thank you kindly for sharing. Two points, friend: Please don't underestimate how useful this is to blokes li,e me with older carb-equipped motorbikes. This is a good amount to go in most recreational bikes and it can't do any harm( I imagine, in my untrained opinion ) to be keeping that water & gunk out of my bikes' running gear. Also, I had to source containers to drain off all the diesel out of my 4x4 recently. By far the best and cheapest option I found was used big containers sold off very cheaply by a local brewery. They make craft type ales and apparently struggle to get rid of the large containers. I just cleaned them out thoroughly, bought a tap from a camping supplier, installed at the bottom exactly as per your clear container. The cost was pennies compared to buying tapped purpose-made containers. Thanks again, friend..........keep smilin', bloke.....

Hi Mick, watching your video on recommendation, can I suggest that you turn your primary tank on end . Place two lengths of wood on your bench, deep enough so as to allow the container to sit up right with the blue cap facing you and overhanging your bench so you can turn your tap on. You will need to screw the wood to the bench. attach a small length of hose to the tap, about 450mm. This tube goes into your petrol can after the process, so you don't have to move your main container. Pour your fuel into your container, add your water. Shake, leave, I think if we both have the same container, the bit of tube that sit's inside your container will when things have settled sit just above the ethanol gunk. So allowing you to recover all your ethanol free fuel but only using one container. I achieved this through trial and error. Great video. I have signed up. Best wishes

You need a conical fermenter used by homebrewers, they hold about 20 liters and have a tap on the bottom. You will have to put a smaller exit line so you don't lose everything if you mess up. They are usually hdpe so it should stand up to gas. Downside is it isn't transparent.
@CailenCambeul
@CailenCambeul 2 года назад
Homebrewer here from Australia. The fermenters I've used come in black and also white. However, with the food colouring, that should be good enough to see through and use with the white fermenters. About 20 litres, yes. There's also larger ones at twice that and more. As for the tap being a bit large, use a gravity fed bottle filler (with a filter if you want) with a hand trigger or bottom of the bottle pin/valve. Add a length of clear hose and any reducers you think are needed, watch the colour change and shut off instantly. Or mix it with fuel spillage pump equipment for extra speed via the optimum mix of creativity.

I'd have to guess that fermenting equipment is not as cheap as, say, watercooler bottle with a cheap, plastic or better yet bronze|brass tap, at the bottom. Drink the watter AND then cheap source of bottles. Just don't store gasoline long term in them. Ok for a day or two tho, IME.

A very interesting video, thank you. Here in Canada I use Premium Gas which does not contain Ethanol in my lawnmower, snowthrower and generators. My two stroke weed wacker uses synthetic fuel. I know that most new gas power equipment is now hardened for Ethanol, I buy premium gas on a regular basis as we use it in my wife’s 33 year old sports car. My truck is a diesel so that is a non issue. I usually keep 100 litres of gas on hand in case we have a power outage and then rotate through it, I paid $ 1.56 a litre this morning for premium gas, which is about £0.91.

High octane gasoline actually burns slower than lower octane fuel. One thing that I add to my fuel to help clean up the engine internals is acetone. Adding acetone has kept me from having to tear down and clean up many carburetors.
@offshoreman71
@offshoreman71 2 года назад
@@thejupiter2 , Yes sir it does. That's proven science. Low octane fuel burns faster and causes octane ping in an engine. There's only 2 ways to solve it, 1st you can slow the burn rate by using higher octane fuel or 2nd you can adjust the timing and retard it to keep it from pinging The reason I add acetone to my fuel is to act as a solvent. It works well for that.

I use regular gas in all my small motored equipment. At the end of each season, I add a small amount of Sea Foam to the gas tanks of my mowers, weed trimmer, and snow blower. Then I run them for a minute or two to circulate the mixture thru the carbs. Then I drain the gas tanks, put a bit of oil in the cylinders, and store them all for the winter. As far as know you can get static build up in fluids, particularly mixes such as water and fuel. Shaking it violently in plastic might be seriously pushing one’s luck. It is a cause of fires at refineries when crude oil is pumped ashore with some sea water which has leaked into the tanks. It ignites whilst passing down the tubes. I've been running E5 and E10 in small engines for years, and haven't seen any problems so far. It's a lot down to humidity, a dryer climate equals less humidity for the ethanol to absorb. Winterisation is also key, I've found that I have a lot less issues with carbs gumming up if I store all small engines in a moderately heated space. Best trick so far however is to run the last few tanks on acrylate petrol before storing the device, that stuff never goes off and doesn't go stale either, and it won't break the bank if you just use it for a couple of tanks at the end of the season.

@@slip0n0fall I think the point C Challinor was making was that the higher octane 97+ in the UK is still E5 which is what the standard (95) used to be until 1st when it changed to E10 so if there were no issues with using E5 then it would probably be more cost effective to just use the premium - deionised water varies in price in the UK plus the octane booster so losing 10% ethanol versus paying a few pennies more per litre for premium is probably marginal versus the effort in losing all the ethanol and then adding an expensive octane booster - it was the same hoo-haa when leaded was removed and those with classic cars were panicking about valve seat recession and the like - I ran a 1972 Triumph Spitfire on standard unleaded for a number of years without a problem! Whilst there are pros and cons to adding ethanol to fuel from a so-called environmental perspective (i.e. the fact that it probably uses more energy to make the ethanol than it generates or the fact that crops are being used instead of for food) this move to E10 just seems to be an excuse to get excited about change for no real reason - I will use E10 in my mower and see how it gets on, if it needs a fuel pipe and carb clean once in a while then so be it!
