Need a new tire or have a flat? Motorcycle dealerships and custom shops charge around $75 or more per hour with an hour minimum requirement, think about how much money you can save by removing and installing the wheel yourself! All you need is a small frame lift and a few, common hand tools.
This video is a step-by-step example of what most motorcyclists will encounter when removing the rear wheel, how a shop will change the tire and balance it, plus how to install the wheel. Handy tips are sprinkled throughout the video, so pay attention to the captions. Some of them fly by quick, but if you miss one don't worry- you can always pause it or go back and see it again.
In case you're wondering; the bike used in the video is an '84-'99 Softail-style custom with a 180mm tire on an 18x5.5" rim. Special thanks to Huntington Beach Hogs and Choppers!
Keep riding and thank you for watching!

I'd add, get your belt tension set when adjusting the axle first, then the muffler side, then check belt again before tightening axle...

Thanks, rbrittne! The chain tensioner you are referring to is the Cam Chain tensioner on Twin-Cam motors. Many companies offer replacement tensioner shoes that shouldn't break down as easily. The best way to fix it is to use gear-driven cams and eliminate the tensioner altogether. Hope that helps!

Daniel, Note or mark the placement of each spacer before removal- then, put the spacers back into place as they were before dis-assembly. Nowadays, it might be easier to snap a close up of each side of the wheel with your camera phone that you can reference later.

Thanks for the info Gregg....Im thinking putting in after market tensior shoes should be pretty simple right? Going to a gear driven cam system sounds a lot more involved...Do you have a video on that?

Is that an internal spacer you put on the axle be for the lock wash. And how dose the internal axle just er keep your wheel from moving back more. Just wondering I'm building a bike with what looks to be the same swing arm. And all my other bike have the adjuster on the back of the swing arm.

I noticed you put the axle bolt in from the left, do you simply keep the spacers on the side they were on?

You didn't say anything about how tight the belt has to be.

Is this basically the same on all years? I have a 2012
@machone351c
@machone351c 11 лет назад
Yes, the installation of a new shoe is relatively simple, just make sure to mark what bolts go where when disassembling because the lengths vary. And don't forget to look for old shoe plastic particles in the cam chest and change your oil. Good luck!

Just an excellent video Greg! I have a 2004 heritage classic and I read the chain tensioner is plastic and wears so pieces of the plastic clog up the oil lines is this true? any fix? thanks.

You don't need to loosen the axle adjusters to remove the wheel

I don't think that big red thing is a common hand tool.
@napieraustin

Mr. Toolsofrenewal he said with some common handtools you can remove it and install yourself and will save you at least $75. He did not say common hand tools to change the tire.

Yep, you are sure right. Don't know why I said that, Unless I was thinking of balancing the rim prior to mounting the tire. That'll save some weights.

agree..and i discovered something when putting on a tire and adjusting the belt tension..depending on set up..if you have a grove on the spacer..and you dont keep the main nut on axle steady and turn the nut side only..you could risk the spacer spining on the bolt head side of axle and bending your adjustment bolt,or snaping it..i discovered mine been broke apparently when i bought the bike..thus had to order another one for my cvo deuce..in which is like 30 bucks for one..its a custon design chrome adjuster and why it cost so much...standard ones are like 2 bucks..just crazy..i will eventually find a shop that can make me 2 out of stainless steel..and polish..its a lot harder metal than the original..but thats a discovery i have learned

yes I prefer Harley's old way of aligning the back wheel having the screw on each side of the wheel. It's not worm proof but it's more precise and easier for me than the Cam like the newer bikes.
@jimr898
@jimr898 7 лет назад
28 bucks for on my 04 cvo softail deuce..and thats just one.because it being a custom chrome bolt at that.standard bolt.1.99 right from milwauke..lol.and i darn shur will get my tire aligned good and in time for a new yr day veteran outing..its that.or ill quick make up one..bolt.grinder.polisher on the dremmel..it will do for one day if thats the case i dont get the new bolt.lol..but hell ya to got to love the old skool way..lot easier fixen than try to deal with mb one the cam styles goes bad..gotta be salty im shur...

Step one, take your bike to a reputable shop. Step two, go eat lunch. Step three, pick your bike up and ride home.
