Video tutorial on how to replace the butyl tape on your vehicles door. Butyl tape is a non hardening sealant which seals and holds on your door’s vapour barrier into place. Over time dust or dirt can become imbedded into the surface either from age or constantly removing the vapour barrier. The vapour carrier then no longer holds into place. With this scenario here I am working with a 1997 BMW 540i E39 body style and instead of a plastic vapour barrier which is found on most vehicles, this is equipped with a foam panel barrier. Issues may vary between vehicles, for this car here, if the panel no longer sticks into place, when it rains the door will leak and water will migrate into the vehicle’s interior. Obviously this can cause many more issues if not addresses such as damaging interior trim, mould, rust, affecting electronics, etc.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-heat gun
-plastic scraper
-replacement butyl tape
-rubbing alcohol/isopropyl
-degreaser
-cloths/rags
-paper towel
Procedure:
-first it is required that you remove the door panel on your vehicle
-once removed you will then have access to a vapour barrier or in this case the foam panel barrier
-if you find the one on your vehicle is damaged, these can be purchased at the dealer or auto parts suppliers
-remove the barrier completely from the vehicle
-The easiest way I’ve found is to heat up the existing sealant with a heat gun which will make it more pliable, then scrap it off with a body filler applicator or a plastic scraper
-you should be able to remove a majority of the sealant, there will be a light film left over
-for the left over film, use some form of degreaser which won't attack the paint and wipe it away using paper towel
-new butyl tape can be purchased at a variety of sources such as the dealer, auto parts supplier, hardware stores, online, etc.
-ensure the barrier is clean as well, these tend to be a little harder to clean than compared to the door, but you can use the same method to clean it as well
-as for applying the new butyl tape, this can be applied to the barrier or door first
-make sure the area is clean of any residue, I like to give both surfaces a wipe down with rubbing alcohol/isopropyl and a clean cloth/rag
-apply the new butyl tape
-for corners, the wax paper will need to be ripped
-push it into place and ensure it sticks
-once done, remove the wax paper and install the barrier
-place it into location, once satisfied, push it into place to ensure the perimeter is sealed
-reinstall door panel in reverse of removal
