The vinegar and baking soda mix won't do much because the two chemicals react with each other, that's why you see the fizz. If I remember correctly from chemistry class a few years back, I think that specific reaction makes carbon dioxide and water, so you're basically just spreading water and baking soda on that part.

Too much product may be the cause, if you see mold on the rubber, replace it. Dont try bleach, it will weaken or crack it. How much detergent to use in a front loader: Liquid: I dont recommend using liquid, they have animal fats which will cause the mold. If you must, here is the dose: 1 tbsp Powder: 1/8th cup Pods: 1 only no matter how soiled your clothes are. If you have hard water: increase dose by 25% Soft water: Decrease by 25% Heavily soiled loads: You are better pre soaking than adding more. Add 50% more if you want. Softener? Use 1 tsp commercial softener or 1/2 c vinegar. Bleach? 1/8th c only This is based on a 12- 16 lb load. adjust based on load size and soil. Thank you for reading if you have made it this far.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) reacts with the other chemicals - compromising their effectiveness, and potentially resulting in unsafe reactions. I suggest you use all 4 chemicals by themselves. By the way, some claim the black residue is actually due to fat deposits from the liquid detergent.

Just got my front loader. Instructions say to run a cup of bleach thrown in the washer, not in the tray, once a month. They do have a self clean cycle for it, but it doesn't light up how much water it i going to use, or what temperature. Following directions with the HE detergent, we use very little and have barely noticeable sudsing. We don't use fabric softener either. Interestingly enough, I think fabric softener may gunk up machines as I've seen people remove the drum to get at white goo stuck in spots you can't get at. Not sure why people use fabric softener as my shirts and clothes come out like new anyway. I think we learned that we were using too much soap based on how much the clothes do not smell like detergent as strongly as they used to. I have a new GE with an antimicrobial gasket, but it also has a fresh vent system whereby it will completely dry the gasket and internals if you press a button. We will see what will happen.

To avoid all of this in the first place: run the laundry machine on the setting 'Regular/Cotton Hot' and add 1 cup of bleach in the bleach compartment. Repeat this about every 3 months. To not let this cycle go to waste, you can use it for some (old) mops.

I have a newer model of Speed Queen washer and dryer. The washer doesn't have mold, but some type of weird, gray mud looking thing. When scraped,it will come off,but needs a lot of scraping. Also, even with the door constantly open,it still has a musty, disgusting smell.I do some vinegar or baking soda short washes before an actual wash.Next day the smell is back, even when the door is open all night. My last machine,Frigidaire, lasted 13 years and had no smell, nor buildup (also a front washer) and at only 1/3 price of the new one. Like other people said, this is a very common issue with the new machines nowadays.

Removing and replacing the rubber gasket is extremely difficult...very difficult to reinstall. You should also clean the class with straight vinegar on a clean cloth. The gasket seals against the glass and calcium and lime tend to build up on the glass and cause leaking.

IMHO, learn to replace the gasket and replace it yourself every few years. the gasket costs £15 for my machine and that's probably the same price as the cleaning products used here. Even if you want to clean the gasket, you would need to take it off the macine. stretch it out so it's unfolded and then bleach clean it. failing that - i've never done this. maybe the next best thing to do is put the entire gasket in a bleach bath for 12 hour.

this is not going to last long, there will be mold spores all over that thing and hiden away in the crevices you can't see. the lip where the gasket faces the drum will be black with mold and you can't see it or apply your mixture on it, the mold will just send spores back into the area you just cleaned and spread all over again. The best solution is to buy a new gasket and fit it, it's not that hard to do for any competant DIYer. I recently replaced a gasket, after I tried to clean mould off a gasket and failed. When I took it out, I was shocked how many hidden crevices there were with mould. Also the metal rim were the gasket attached to was full of mold - but it just wiped off the metal.
