Those guys were really annoyed by you being up there. 😆 Not gonna lie though, I came here searching for how to repair my roof and I found this to be very informative. 👍
I went back to this video and I’m glad the homeowner video this and posted it. I’ve learned a lot what materials they use. Although they’re seems annoyed at first
@@johnmichaelkarma so you think he edited out the super annoying questions... Or do you think there were ten times as many questions that didn't make the final cut.... I'm guessing the latter. Gtfoff the roof. Its dangerous having some idiot in your way.
They hated the fact that you were hanging over their shoulder the entire time. Had they known you were going to do this they would’ve turned down the job. I’m guessing no one looks over your shoulder the entire time you’re at work.
I know, right?!? A few incisive questions where warranted would have been helpful. But his torrent of requests to confirm his "no-shit" observations with oh-too-many statements about him was enough to make me jettison this ¼ of the way through. I wish they would have all said STFU and let us work at the end, but I'm not going through the agony to find out.
Thanks for posting! Despite some of these highly opinionated comments, I really enjoyed this. I have a porch roof redo coming up and want to see what's involved. This contractor seems to have it down to a science, and the trabajadores are very skilled and made it look easy. This was a good 'infomercial' for this contractor!
Super helpful, I need to repair a flat roof at the house, just like this as it abuts up to a hip roof. Thank you so much I really appreciate you asking all the questions, even though the other comment were up set, you asked and got answered all the questions I have, thank you. Kevin in Cincinnati
Very good job. Those boys went above and beyond with those over laps on bottom layer. Might be more cost effective to have done TPO for white or epdm if ok to do in black. No seams when bought in bulk. I can do that with rubber membrane in half a day alone. Call it a full day with repairs. I tell you this so you can have an idea what it would take. Not knocking these guys at all. Very good job indeed.
Do people like this guy realize how annoying they are to the guys who are just trying to work? Your condescending humor doesnt come off too well but i do appreciate the knowledge from the video lol
I slipped some under the roof shingles because it wasn't there Then I thought I did something wrong So when they come replace roof I guess I'm right to have it Thanks for this video
I have been looking at a ton of videos (mostly from GAF and Mule-Hide) on installing either peel and stick "Mod Bit", or torch-down "Mod Bit". Home Depot and Lowes both have "Mod Bit" GAF Liberty peel and stick OR torch-down. You can choose your Mod Bit type between a SBS or an APP. SBS has more of a rubberized ingredient, and an APP has more of a plastic ingredient... but both are mod bits. They are about the same price and about the same expected life I think... which is 10 to 25 years depending on the number of layers (ie. plys) you put on. There is also EPDM and PVC types of flat roof material, but frankly I did not have the time to research those any more than 10 minutes. But THINK that for residential roofs, "mod bit" seems to be most popular now. Besides GAF, the only other brand I have researched is Mule-Hide. It seems just as good as GAF, and also has peel and stick and torch-on in SBS or APP. I have not made a final choice yet, but will decide soon after I talk to the Mule-Hide supply house in town. (If I get a chance I will let yall know which I end up going with and why.) You are suppose to roll on a black primer coat to the wood deck to activate the SA (Self Adhesive base sheet). This primer coat allows the base sheet to stick better. I am also seeing that you may NOT want to put on the SA base sheet directly onto the wood (as they did in the video)... even with the primer. Because it will be impossible to remove years from now on the next roof job. So you may need to replace the plywood deck! yikes!!! So, I am reading that you may want to put down the MA base sheet first (Mech Attached nail-down) as your FIRST PLY. It will save your wood deck from being destroyed on you NEXT roof replacement years from now. After your base sheet, you would next put on either a cap sheet, OR you could next put on a middle smooth ply sheet, and then a granular cap sheet. The more plys, the better... .and the more expensive. BTW ... Mule-Hide has a sheet that can be used as EITHER a base sheet OR as a cap sheet. It has a smooth top (NOT granulated) It is called "APP Torch Base/Cap". You torch it on. Not sure if GAF has something like that, or if it only comes as a torch-on. Like i said, i am not a roofer. Hopefully we hear from someone that knows this stuff. After researching the various materials and brands for an upcoming roof job, I now realize that getting the job done correctly, as THE MANUFACTURER CALLS FOR, is probably more important than the brand or specific type of material used. Great job on the video! It was good to see real-world roofing video. Those slick factory videos with that background music and fancy graphics are boring after the first 10. Thanks! Any tips or opinions on low slope roofing from an actual installer would be great if someone cares to share.
can't believe all the negative comments. the guys actually doing the work weren't asked any questions and didn't seem bothered in the least...they were working, quickly and efficiently. And as the homeowner he's got every right to be up there monitoring and learning about the process. Plus if the roof leaks, he's got the whole thing on video to prove where they went wrong. Good stuff Tom, thanks for the video *edit - AND now the roofing co has a free promo video they can share to show the quality of their work. smh, people find anything and everything to complain about. try looking for the good once in a while
Naw. They were annoyed. From a worker's point of view, there was no way of really seeing the "good" in those situations. You're only getting in the way and interrupting the workflow. I think the guy with the nailgun was annoyed the most, lol.
What video were YOU watching? because I saw MANY questions asked by the cameraman and I saw ALL the workers were irritated, including the man that appeared to be the company owner.
I feel terrible for those roofers... 3 minutes in and I can't watch anymore.. Don't EVER do that again to people.. you best call them up and apologize and thank them for not pushing you off that roof
the vid is 30 minutes, the job is many hours, there is much editing, the few questions don't mean shit. 3 minutes in and you can't watch, where is your patience,
I had a customer sit in his lawn chair and watch me work all day. It didn’t bother me. I like it when people see how hard I work and how much work goes into a roof
@@alexleanh why would I say anything when he’s paying me. I’m a gifted tradesmen and I’m used to people watching me. You seem unbalanced. Is there something wrong with you
@ Tom... Nice video! ... By the way, I remove tar from my hands with "citric acid" that you can buy somewhere, or just use a citrus peel (orange, lime, lemon) plus a little sand, it works all the time for me, of course if it is only a small amount of tar on your hands. I also have used citrus peels to remove tar from my car body, (splashed tar from the road). After squeezing and rubbing the citrus peel on the spot with tar, just wash with soapy water and rinse well. P.S: Do not use sand on the car paint... LOL...
Gasoline works fine. Goop works as well. Going to redo my roofs. I hope the stuff I use is good. It’s a modified base sheet and Awaplan fr white. Will be 1/4 to the foot slope. I put the first one on 25 years ago. No leaks in 25 years. Little maintenance over the years. Always turn the base over and cover the wood. Peel and stick is garbage. On a flat roof that is. Best flat roof material for that application would be sarnafil or a brand of tpo . I prefer sarnafil.
That guy has been present at every site visit and preliminary analysis that I've been to.. ffs. After watching the video though, this guy is the way that we should all be when it comes to our projects. If he wasn't as inquisitive, we wouldn't have this video.
What’s with all that mastic? Rolled aluminum in that transition?? That was a dumb detail as it would have been much better for the installation to add another layer of the self adhered base sheet!!
Your video was very informative and I was impressed by the specific products used. Can you provide the specific name and/or manufacturer of the products used, both the underlayment and the final covering?
Tom what if a mod bit roof was laid with no wood underneath? I have a roof I need to replace and whoever did it before just glued it down to the celotex ceiling tiles. If I have the exisitng shingles stripped off it will most likely damage the ceiling which will then need replacing. Have you seen this before? What are my options? Thank you
Well that’s a very unique situation I’m surprised that there isn’t an infrastructure underneath with plywood that your roof is attached to this may require some engineering to figure out OK good luck thanks for watching
😂 the contractor didn’t say it but was uncomfortable with the owner over the roof. As well the workers were uncomfortable with him looking at them working. No one likes to have a boss breathing over your shoulder when you work. And if something happens to the owner for being up when people is working, he will be the only responsible not he contractor’s insurance. 😅
How do you determine whether you can lay the new roof over the old (assuming there’s only one existing layer) or if you need to tear up the old roof? If the plywood looks okay from underneath (no water stained or rot), does that mean it doesn’t need replacement?
I would tear off the old one just to make sure that you don’t have water damage and to see if you need to replace any wood. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
If you have damage to the underling wood you need to replace if it is rotten. Its always best to remove the old one just to make sure you don't have any unseen problems.
Hello there I have a house in San Diego Ca need to repair and replace the roof exactly as you were doing in this house so how much would it cost? My patio flat roof was building the same style as this house but it is bigger than this I think it is around 550sf . please let me know if you can help . Thank you so much and have a great day
Is the nail sticking under the ceiling, I am trying to do this on my patio roof and I don’t what to do to avoid the nail being shown under the ceiling? Any suggestion?
Thanks for the the video... But lordy, that must have been annoying for the workers to have this person hovering over the work like that.. I have walked off jobs where the owner of the house is standing over my shoulder. Luckily construction is in such demand we don't have to put up that crap at all.. Just move to the next job.
Anyone notice that the shingle tie in was messed up. The shingle roof is 6" separation on the tabs and they tied in with 4" . Last 30 seconds of video.
No priming the base sheet? No priming the cap sheet? No heat welding the laps with a lister gun?? No burning of the poly ?? I never seen this system before. Seems like a Good job just hope their not in a hurricane or tornado area. All the nails might indicate they where.
Tom Leeman if the manufacturer’s. Say it well hold I guess so. I am from Canada. We have a really bad heat cold cycle -30 c to+30. Or-22 f to+86f or-50 c with the wind chill or +40 with the humidity. We just might have to do the extra steps. For the temperature extremes.
One question I don't know where you guys are I'm assuming somewhere in the US. I'm a roofer in Canada with over 25 years experience don't you guys ever use elastico stick primer before laying out your peel and stick base a cap. It's the only way we ever do it and the laps on the cap sheet would get heat welded with a leister gun.
You are annoying af but thank you for the video. Without your entitled personality i would of never gotten this knowledge and all of your questions really help. This is the best video on this inhave found so thank you.
Tom we have a patio with flat roof very low pitch almost flat. and our guy installed tar paper and put asphalt shingles. Im worried about the leaking.....
@@TomLeeman thanks Tom. It rained today and most of the water ran off to the sides. However some shingles had standing water on top of it. No huge puddles...we live in cali so we dont get that much rain fall to begin with.
Seems like a nice guy, but if I agree to a job and once I start the homeowner comes out and gets right up in my face with a camera, without ever mentioning he was going to do this beforehand, I'd be beyond irritated. Consent should be required before filming someone like this, imo, at the very least as a gesture of respect. (Obviously the roofer was surprised w the situation)
Pretty problematic, your comment about requiring more money to do the labor... never forget these guys are doing the hard work that you would never want to and deserve much more respect and less of your condescension... That said, great video, thanks!
I see several OSHA violations here I love it when idiots make videos of themselves 35 years union journeyman foreman/superintendent here I just laughed at you guys
That’s Florida for you the land of no regulations kind of crazy right but so far we haven’t had any leaks cross your fingers thanks for the tips and notes appreciate it and thanks for watching
that wasn't tpo. that was regular WHITE aggregate rolled roofing 30:07 pause. sheesh, the homeowner that paid for it and on the roof acting like he knows what's going on, doesn't even know.
Thanks everybody else is telling me I shouldn’t be watching them, but I wanted to see how they did it and I wanted to make sure all the bad wood was pulled up. Thanks for watching.
@@TomLeeman so i found out gaf has a mechanicallyy applied sbs base layer but it is not available at Lowes or Home Depot. SBS mechanically attached base sheet. going to be hell getting that crap off the plywood in 10-12 years.
@Pizzurp thanks for reply, but I don’t see they use torch unless I’m missing it. All I see they did was rolling the heavy roller around to make sure it’s stick.
And its beat to unroll it so it can relax for a while before its stuck down. Depending on how hot it was that day. If it wasn't very warm out when installed it will wrinkle and look like shit in the summer.
@@BUSTRCHERRI 100%. Mine got vertical AND horizontal ripples because I didn't lay it out long enough. It kept blowing off the roof so I just went and banged it on there. Still managed to get 20 years out of it though, thanks to elastomeric coatings!
The only reason somebody would dislike being watched by the homeowner is because they can't cut corners and they can't cheat on the job otherwise you want them to see what you're doing you want them to see that you are giving them what they pay for a professional job if anybody should have been upset on this job it should have been the homeowner these guys were putting a base sheet down in the rain absolutely no no in the roofing industry
Yeah and you guys are using any safety gear or any safety barricades on your edges what I’m watching you guys walk backwards to the edge. I’m surprised no ones falling off
