I have a 1947 Chrysler that belonged to my grandpa. I have been using this exact same method to polish up all the tons of chrome on it. So far I have about half of the lower part of the front bumper done. It looks great after only about 8 years working on it. I can't wait to get it all done.

Would have took 5 mins with some normal cleaning paste. Those little dots come back after a little rain etc. Because you're not removing rust. You're removing rust stains from the chrome that leak through those pinholes.

You know deodorant has aluminum in it, and it's easy to apply. I've been using it for years to polish chrome. Secret is made for a women but strong enough for a fender.

Your solution makes a wonderful polish but I've noticed that all of the rust pets are still very present on that fender and I would suggest taking the fender material down to the level of those pits to penetrate all of the rust first. THEN use your polish concoction. I would use WD-50 as a lubricant an #0000 steel wool to get all of the rust off THEN buff your solution into the fender. All rust pits would be gone AND you'd get a wonderful mirror shine.

oxalic acid mix about a tsp to a gallon of water, drop in part, come back in a few hours or next day and rinse part hardest part is lifting the water

If you need to polish aluminum that is not anodized and is turning white, use ashes from a wood stove on your buffer - works way better and faster than the expensive pastes. Sift the ashes through a big screen sieve to get a fine consistent powder from your ashes. I have spent many hours polishing aluminum and bought the expensive paste, and then tried wood ashes, trust me. Ashes all the way. Maybe it would work for chrome too?

I've been polishing chrome for years with 0000 steel wool and Windex. Works great a lot of the rust is bleed over from tiny cracks in the chrome so it basically wipes off. What I haven't figured out yet is how to fill the cracks or pitting where no chrome exists with something that can be polished to get better results on parts in a more neglected state.

Steel Wool grade 0000 and WD-40 so no scratches and the WD removes the rust and lubes for protection, just maybe wipe dry if on a chrome exhaust.

I've seen a lot of comments teasing about the drill. As a contractor, I have to say that's a great drill. there's a lot you can do with a little hand drill like that which is superior (not faster) than an electric. for this job I'd use electric for the speed but that drill will last forever, doesn't need an outlet, and is especially good for drilling through glass tile (with the right bit) or drilling somewhere you don't feel like running an extension cord when you just need to make a quick small hole.

Ichiban Moto Me either but even as a kid my chrome bicycle fender had more rust on it than that but I borrowed my mothers steel wool she used for cleaning in the kitchen and it takes that kind of rust off almost instantly. It doesn't scratch the chrome either. Chrome being pretty hard material.

Nevr-Dull and 5 minutes. No need to over complicate things, Just get yourself a jar of nevr-dull wadding polish. You can reuse it over and over so it is very cost effective. I have had and used the same tin for about 7 years. Pretty good for a 5 dollar can of polishing wadding

Note : For more fast acting solution use Apple cider vinegar.. its stronger acid than white vinegar .. and also baking soda. Can make bubbly solution mixing the two.. and When done make sure acid is nutralized by rubbing in baking soda . (Baking soda, by itself). Otherwise the acid from vinegar may continue to eat away at the metal. Maybe white vinegar and salt may do fine as in this video.. but for more tough or stubborn grimey jobs i recommend using the ingredients i mentioned .. because i tried the salt/white vinegar .. but it wasnt helping fast enuff. So i lookd into how to intensify the process. Came up with that. It served me well.

Just tried it to polish a rusted over Eames LCM. Regular organic kitchen vinegar, couldn't find anything else. Eyeballed the ratios. Hard work but well worth it. It'll shine like new before the week is done. Previous owners thought it was lawn furniture I think, I'll have to relayer the seat and back next.

With all do respect, Screw all of this! A roll of aluminum foil and a bowl of water and 1 hand. Get the fender wet and start rubbing the tinfoil across it like your sanding. It makes its own polishing compound too! I detailed a complete Harley that was loaded with Chrome from the handlebars, engine parts, exhaust, and wheels that had been sitting outside for a couple years. It came out amazing. I worked on it for 12 hours. Everything was spot rusted and all it took was some gentle rubbing. I wasn't even sore afterward. No crazy toxic chemicals!!!!

Can it be done for exhaust pipe that is not chrome? My factory standard exhaust pipe got a surface rust. It used to be black though. I'm affraid it'll weaken the pipe

@@glowiever im not sure how it will do. Might mess up paint surface. Chrome is easily scratchable so i would think the tinfoil is a mild abrasive. Try small area underneath.

Good idea for a DIY project however I’ve found that Quick-Glo works in literally seconds right out the can and is AMAZING!!! The best product I’ve ever seen on Chrome! Saw it on Leno’s Garage and thought for $15 a jar why not try it! We recently started working on a 1927 Buick and Quick-Glo brought the Chrome/Nickel trim back!!!!!!! Check it out..... Again, the DIY chemical reaction is best no doubt but in a pinch I’d recommend Quick-Glo..... you’ll thank me!

It used to take 80 hours (and a lot of Coke) per bike. "This process works 10x faster than Coke and regular aluminum foil."

+girlsdrinkfeck the small amount of cocaine that is mixed into real coke at the factory (which is only a very small amount... round about 1gram per can) reacts with the aluminium powder to create a more powerful chrome enhancer. We learned about this at chrome polishing college.

I'd follow that with Turtle Wax mag wheel polish. That'll get some of the scratches and pits out of the surface. Works well on stainless steel mufflers too. I did that every spring on the SS exhaust on my '94 Probe tuner for years...same muffler too.

Best and simplest is ultra fine steel wool 0000 and liquid turtle wax! Soak the steel wool with the wax and rub away! It will never scratch the surface as long as you keep the wool soaked. I had a plastic bag stick to my hot exhaust pipe and went to the Harley shop. Old guy told me this trick. Works great on rusty chrome or new chrome with crap on it. Never scratches and looks great!

That works really well but with ordinary kitchen polish there would not have been sharp sand from the paper in the play. Try without the aluminium powder. I learned it can burst into flames and is not good for health when being inhaled either.

+Ichiban Moto I know. I know! Haha. I get that. Put it this way, in an apocalyptic era, when batteries for drills just stop workin', (as they do nowadays only lasting like 2 years...) your mechanical drill will still be serving. So I'm for it. I just find it funny seeing you use it. 😆

Mr ItchyBum, hot tip: spin the pad in reverse.Speeds up the removal.I can recommend just one extra ingredient for your concoction/potion.Works like a bomb.Literally.

I would suggest trying some Happich SemiChrome polish. It’s a paste that come in a tube like toothpaste (commonly 1.76oz/50grams. I work on guitars and other stringed instruments and this stuff is amazing. I haven’t seen it in stores, I buy online. Chrome, nickel, gold, lacquer, enamel, it works almost everywhere and I have brought back some things most people would have thought were a lost cause. It does take some elbow grease, it’s not wipe on, wipe off but is an outstanding polish and different than most things I’ve tried. (I’m not affiliated with the company, just a happy customer).

Lay quadruple stacked paper towels, fully saturated with Evaporust, onto the fender (make sure theres no little air pockets) and then wrap it with Suran Wrap. When you remove this stuff, in about 6 to 12 hours, there will not be any work left to do, except remove what little (if any) rust it left behind with some 0000 steel wool. The steel wool will not scratch, believe it or not. You should only have to buff with light pressure, the 0000 steel wool will work wonders alone.
