How to remove "servo brake" ABS from BMW k1200 or similar bike

((UPDATE!!.. i gave credit to a video which, like all of the others i watched, showed me the INCORRECT way to do this. technically, it works, but, THE SPEEDOMETER NO LONGER WORKS ON THIS BIKE with that configuration. I am in the process of making a followup video. ((up-update... the FOLLOWUP video is now on my channel... )) ))
The PROPER way to do this, is to leave the electronics portion of the ABS pump, and remove the remainder, then unplug the ABS light from the dash.
Since i did this the way i did, i will have to solder 25 or so wires back in place, or, at minimum, the power IN wires, and the speedo wires out.
The speedo sensor IS IN THE ABS UNIT... yet another reason i hate BMW... "HEY, i know, let's run the headlight wire through the exhaust, and put a computer on the oil cap, and run the speedometer through the brakes! AWESOMEEEE!" ))
This is a vlog post for Random Curiosities. In today's episode, i am removing the ABS / Anti lock brake system / servo actuated brakes / power assisted brakes or whatever you want to call it from a BMW k1200 motorcycle.
The concepts are the same for just about every BMW that has the servo crap on it. the only difference may be the wiring diagram.
Awesome forum with several really knowledgeable and nice people willing to help!

Thanks for your videos, along with several others that I watched on RU-vid it gave me the confidence to do the same job on my 2003 K 1200 RS. I'm not sure I would have been successful had I not watched this video so thanks again, Mark.

Thanks for the video! I just did the same procedure and resurrected my 2004 K1200RS that was sitting in the garage for 2 years. Same problem, same bs estimate from my dealer...I harvested the computer off of the pump and initially the running light and brake light worked but stopped working after I put everything back together. Bought the relays and did the rewiring and now it's fine. Thanks again!!

What an excellent and thoroughly nice chap Mitch is ! This video is a tribute to his perseverance and patience. Video production is very tasty too. AL in the UK ( just switched allegiances from the unspeakable BMW crap after 30 years and now a Honda NC 750 S auto owner - a fantastic revelation ! And no outsourced crappy Chinese components either ! )

Thanks - worth noting this is removal of the servo on the earlier pre facelift K1200RS with ABS2. It's not for the later bikes with iABS although the principles are similar. iABS has "BMW" marked on front calipers, whereas ABS has Brembo calipers.

Thanks for the info. Just a heads-up: My 2000 K1200RS set up on the rear brake is a bit different. I was unable to attache the line coming from the master cyl to the upper (forward) receiver point that you used. I had to use the lower (rear) connect point, because they are backwards from your demo. My brake pressure dropped considerably, but a bit more foot weight and it works fine.

You posted this in 2015 so now that it's been a while I wanted to ask if you were still happy with the outcome. Has anyone else that's seen this tried it and been happy or unhappy? My 2002 is throwing an error now and I'm afraid it's going to come down to replacing the ABS unit or doing what you did, but I wanted to make sure people were happy with it before I do something that can't be undone.

I do not want to doubt that the AB systems at BMW from the 1st and 2nd generation are somewhat coarse and not particularly durable. However, and that should definitely be mentioned for those whose ABS still works: Change the brake fluid too often than too seldom! Since brake fluid is known to be hygroscopic, the bound water in the hydraulic unit causes corrosion relatively quickly and leads to the well-known blocking of the control valves and / or the pump. Simple cause, great consequence. There is a reason for maintenance intervals !;) So long, always enough asphalt under the tires ...

Great video. I just bought an 07 K1200R Sport... the bike is mint with only 2.6k on the odometer. Guess what... brake failure. Probably why they sold it. I will be eliminating the abs so look for my video in the future at paul phillips fix. Thanks again for the video good job.

Dude ! I feel your pain, but heads up not only does the speedo not work the freaking Break Light does not work either and that sets you up to be slammed into from behind, the bike is NOT roadworthy, should not be on the road without brake light. I have two of these bikes (It's a Love / Hate relationship). The first time your coming down from 120 + and you go for the breaks and they are not there OR your just out in traffic and somebody cuts you off and you live, you will want the ABS off the bike ASAP. I really don't know how BMW has gotten away with this (imagine if this happened in your auto, their would be a Massive Recall and the manufacture would be held accountable for the deaths) As you know its 10 X's more dangerous on a bike. BMW should step up with a kit to remove the ABS, and do a recall and remove them. For my bikes the parts needed to remove the ABS and convert to non-ABS are stock. I estimate the job to take approximately two hours labor for a trained BMW motorcycle mechanic (whats just one life worth ? ) I have read all the information in every forum I can find and I have viewed all the video's I can find. I have removed the control module from the ABS unit of one of my bikes (while in the bike, they (BMW) said that could not be done) and sent it out to Module Masters to repair and replace burnt chips on the circuit board BUT the safe bet is to GET RID of the ABS. So, thank you for your video and telling riders the pit falls.

Hi, few questions, what were the two relays for you installed was it one for front brake to activate brake light then the same for the brake pedal? Secondly all the wires you cut you put some to relays what did you do with the rest? Thanks sorry but really don’t understand your diagram

Cool video. A tad too long but watchable with the editing. Perhaps I skipped through it but otherwise I don't think you explained what you were doing with the relays. And what was the deal with the Speedo stopping to work. Lastly, do you know why/how the ABS servo (pump?) actuating would cause the Tach needle to deflect (and then while we are at it, why might a bike get stuck in the Ignition turn on initial self test thus actuating the ABS servo about once per second..

I'm looking at a BMW K1200GT with intermittent ABS issues. Cars with intermittent issues is handled by removing the fuse. Can this been done on a BMW bike? I removed the ABS system on my '91 K100RS with no issues. Never had this braking system before and never needed it. Figured I could do the same with the GT. Thanks for the info, and enjoyed your video commentaries and adlib comedy inserts. Lovely music. . :>)

Would it still work just capping off the lines to the servo that was disconnected? I assume the existing harness would just activate the brakes lights from the hand and foot switches without having to remove the whole system and re-wire in relays (in case the ABS was fixed at a later date). Great job by the way and thanks for editing and uploading.

The switches on these ABS bikes are normally closed as opposed to non ABS bikes that are normally open. Therefore he had to use the relay setup he used to make them work.

I just want to keep the servo/ABS electronics connected and also leave all the lines/hardware in. Where or what size fittings do I get to cap/plug the lines that are disconnected going to the servo/ABS unit? Thank you.... Is the size an AN3 flare cap or plug?
@DaytonCarCare

OK did some research. From what I understand it's an 3AN or M10x1.0 thread size. So four flare caps of that size will be necessary to cap off the ABS servo lines.

you really need to find a wiring diagram for your bike and go from there. i cant even begin to guess without looking at a diagram what does what. but.. all u need are the wires i mentioned. or....... since you have already cut it off, finish out the original way. hell your bike may even have the additional speedo pickup thing on the swingarm. hell you may be riding a honda.. idk.. you never said what bike. but yah... if u plug all of the wires back it will work. but it will also throw a fuck ton of codes and give you a check engine light type thing and an abs light and all sorts of shit. but..... it wont affect the bike itself... all you really need sre the wires i mentioned. and.. to unplug the ABS light bulb in the dash. take the bulb out.

Hi Thanks for the vid, i found it really useful. Just one question, is there any reason why the abs unit cant be left in place after it has been bled and the pipes disconnected? Im looking to tackle this fairly soon and im not massively interested in removing the unit unless i really need to. Im happy to conceal the piping but was curious to know if the electrics can still function through the unit after the brake fluids have been drained from the servo and pipes disconnected. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

I don't know what an inline pressure sensor is. I ended up changing the front brake switch to make the brake light work. I never use the rear brake so I just left the switch there. And if I ever do, it's used with the front brake so I have a brake ;light either way.

@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 8 лет назад
thought I'd ask. is it a euro model? and either way you still need a wiring diagram. or... i know for sure there are forum posts that talk about the different wire colors. i found one once where someone had the same issue. maybe something about a purple wire but i dont remember for sure. not trying to leave you hanging, but i keep asking for specifics like a wiring diagram or maybe which wires are different or something fkr me to go on. you'll still need to wire up those relays so your lights work. the voltages and amperages are different, which is why they use them.... but most bikes dont use relays for brake lights. you can look at the wires going to the master cylinders and write those down... thats 4 wires... then you can use a power probe to figure put which ones are hot when the key is on. then you can look at the tail light bucket and figure out what colors are hooked to the tail light. that gives you a great start. write it all down and compare.
@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 8 лет назад
but more importantly im sure SOME of those wires are the same.... which ones are missing? but physically look at the bike and the wires at the ends that plug into master cylinders and tail light.
@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 8 лет назад
brown is almost always ground on euro bikes .. "earth"... soil... dirt... ground.. brown... most japanese bikes are green... earth... green plants... ground... and they are generally thicker wires.
@MythicGuitarCompany

87a to 87a are going to be voltage in.... hot wire... keyed / switched power
@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 8 лет назад
and the rest of them either come from the brake lever foot brake or tail light.... i hope that helps... if you trace them back, you can put 2+2 together on them. but a diagram would cut all of the guess work out of it.

I done this with mine, a 2003 BMW K1200GT. You need to retain the ECU unit on the top of the pump though. I simply removed it, and disconnected the wires to the pump motors, (there are 4 of them), then I removed the 2 warning light bulbs, Brake Failure and General Warning (Triangle). One problem still remains though, and that is, when the reservoir is topped up, and the bike is on the side stand, fluid leaks from the pump because the reservoir is still piped up to it. How do you stop that happening, without having to put the bike on the main stand all the time??
@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 7 лет назад
yeah i agree completely. i did link to a followup video which explained the same thing you said, more or less. and i also put it in the comments, and said the same to others who responded asking me various questions, in hopes that they see it and do not make the same mistake i did. i did what everyone else did and watched a video about how to do it and i figured out all the ways it went wrong after the fact, but unlike the other videos, i did post a followup video warning people against the mistakes. fortunately, many have watched it. feel free to watch that one as well, and i do appreciate the comments. also feel free to leave any other advice that may help others out. thanks!

It's a winter project of mine to remove the pump and see if an effective repair can be completed. I believe the problem to be with the brushes on the pump motor, or motors in my case. If that is so, then the only problem should be finding the correct size brushes to suit. I tried to get BMW to recall the affected bikes and replace the pumps, but they wouldn't agree. They did offer the pump to me for £340, (originally £1700) as long as I got a BMW Motorrad dealer to install it, at a further cost of £400, but my argument was that this was a serious health and safety issue, and they should replace them. Also, why would I want to spend that sort of money on a 13 yo bike? I may do a video of any repair attempts.
@MythicGuitarCompany
@MythicGuitarCompany 7 лет назад
Philip Kilpatrick i agree about the 13 year old bike thing. as for the pump, a few different things go wrong with them. the seals go bad inside and pressure does not build. or the motor can go bad. if you hear it "doing something" then the motor isn't necessarily bad. as for swapping the brushes, i'm not sure if they can be changed on the motor(s). i didn't actually open it up to see what kind of motor was in there. it's probably a brushless motor, like most modern day electric motors. that's not to say you are wrong. fact is, i'm not sure. but, 99% of other bikes in the world don't have abs, and those that do, rarely fail, but, this bike is notorious for failed ABS, which is evident by the amount of views i get on this video, and the plethora of other videos on the subject that exist. lol. however.. it's been a while since i've posted it, and the owner has brought the bike back to fix several other things, but has not had an issue with the brakes since i removed the pump. but... the thing i'd do differently, and it's been touched upon in other comments and a followup video, but, you leave the computer in place, and eliminate the pump part and connect the master cylinders directly to the calipers like every other bike out there. That way you don't have do do all of the crazy wiring, and will still have a speedo, if yours doesn't have an extra part for a manual cable like some of them do. you'll have to snip a few wires and pull the bulb so you won't have a light on the dash. but. it works perfectly fine. you can find rebuild kids for them but they aren't easy to find and they don't replace the motors, just seals. and the only way you can find brushes for them is to figure out who made the motor and contact them directly. (may need to find a Chinese translator). But the way i see it, is if it failed once, it will fail again, and again.. and if the motors are the problem now, the seals will be the problem next time. and it takes a lot of effort to remove that thing every time something goes wrong. and it removes over 13 pounds from the top of your top heavy bike, which helps handling more than you'd think, AND changes the power:weight ratio.. just my thought. but please do check out the followup video. it's in the description. and thanks for the comment!
@danthedobermann
@danthedobermann 7 лет назад
I have the brakes directly connected now, both front and back. The ABS pump plays no part in the set up now. The pump is coming out anyway, as it's just additional weight that is no longer required, but as I say, i'll have a look at repair, and if it's unsuccessful, no harm done!! I'll keep you posted. keep up the videos!!

Go to the brake lever. find the wire colors. go to the foot brake pedal. find the wire colors. go to the tail light. find the wire colors. find the wire colors that come out of your turn signal switch just in case. go to the loom. find the matching wire colors. google a wiring diagram, or do this visually........ i don't know the wire colors. if your blinkers don't work as is, then you need to figure that out too. turn your volt meter on and find one with 12v when the key is on.. probably a big red one or big yellow one with red... usually..... find a ground, or make one yourself. then plug them into the the relays accordingly. one relay is for front brake lever one is for rear brake lever. so, by common sense, one wire from the one goes to one and the other goes to the other. ground and power go to both. some of the wires in the diagram i showed don't exist because YOU have to make them to connect the two relays together..... off hand, i think they are power and ground only. but FIND A WIRING DIAGRAM so at minimum, you can figure out what the wires are that were described in the diagram i put on the video, and then compare to the wires you traced on your bike. blue may be purple red may be yellow black may be fuscia. i don't know. but if YOU know what they are on your bike, you can compare them to a diagram.There are tons of bmw forums and even forums for this specific bike that have 100% of the answers. in fact, they even have the wiring diagrams for every model and year. But that's pretty much the extent of what i can help you with.. if you do those things i may be able to help you... but... if you do those things, you probably wont need my help, and will learn a lot in the process so it won't be as scary / fucked up next time you try to tackle a pro level job... i don't mean that condescendingly. i mean that as.... electrical shit is not for the faint of heart. it's pro level work. so... if you figure it out, you'll be all the better for it. good luck

MB, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but if Lex just removes the ECU (it's retained by 4 secure hex screws) from the top of the pump, then disconnects the 4 wires connected to the motors, all that remains to do is remove the bulb(s) in the dash. That way the wiring remains intact, in the event that the pump is refitted. Of course, the brakes themselves will have to be plumbed straight from reservoir to calliper, once the pump is removed from the equation.

HI there! really good video!... a question, you reckon the same can be done on a k1200r 2006?... I was checking the diagrams and apparently the lines are different as shown here www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog2/MicroList.aspx?id=51582&catID=&catname=&bindName=Brake%20line,%20front,%20I-ABS%20Generation%201&bindCat=34_1932 ... so I was wondering if only by connecting hose 1 to hose 17 would do the job...answer most appreciated; really!... thx in advance!

hey klob, yeah, it looks like you'd go from 1 to 17. do a little more resesrch before you tear your bike apart though. i do have a followup video that you should watch. you're supposed to unscrew the computer part from the servo and throw the pump part away. not chop the entire thing out like i did... that eliminates all of the weird wiring crap, and in the case of this bike model, it would have still had a speedometer. some of the newer bikes had a separate speedo pickup, which you could tap into. this bike did not. the speedo went through the brake system.... anyway, please look into it before you tear your bike apart. there are always unforeseen issues.

+Klob Toluca About your ABS FAIL K1200: DUDE! just repair that thing! the servo pump has most of the times only the broken carbon things like most electric engines... not much different to a vacuum cleaner engine... with some tricks and the right carbon stick's and a few hours you rebuild that thing. And all is good till the next time. Cost less then $100! That is what BMW will not tell you!

I converted my own. You don't need to go as far as he did though. Just connect the brake lines as described in the video, and remove the brake warning and warning triangle bulbs.

I own a K1200R and it is criminal to me how BMW never supported these bikes to cure the poor engineering and manufacturing defects. Like; Faulty fuel level sensor, faulty shift linkage sensor that requires and new transmission and finally ABS II.

The average dealership mechanic wouldn't be able to do this ,reason why they got a bee in the bonnet .Most only know how to plug in a computer and change oil and filters .There real engineering skills are non existent

man that sounds like you cut the completely wrong part out or something. bikes vary by maybe 1 or 2 wire colors but not a completely different setup for the same exact year and model..

Great job, dude. Way to think it through beforehand!! Though it scares the $h1t outta me to have the ABS go out on my 2004 K1200GT, I think the BMW dealer had it exactly right when he told your customer, "If you'd trust your life to this guy..." Me? Nahhh, not so much. From what I saw on this video, you're about the last guy I'd let hack away on my bike. From the lame-ass circus-clown music to the sloppiness in your tool handling, to the lack of a plan for where to relocate components, to not thoroughly understanding the control system electronics and therefore f-ing that part up... to the unprofessional and unnecessary sneering rants, well... need I say more? Unsolicited advice: Don't quit your day job. Because you ain't gonna make a living doing the likes of this. As for your client... I can only include him in my prayers.

BMW sells a death trap tells its customers it’s their problem and it can’t be fixed except by them the same way. This guy comes along and takes the time to figure it out and make a video about how to bypass it albeit not a perfect solution in this video, but it was a start-where’s your video of the solution?

Why even waste all that time ( much appreciated btw) when you can ditch the whole lot (or just unplug the electronics) especially when the electronics are fried (plenty of pics on the web) inc mine, which complicates the procedure. What you then need to repair is the brake lights, rear tail light, and speedo (and cruise too if required) So, do some wiring, and shove a GPS on the face of the speedo.........done..........................

Bob Murphy well if you only unplug the electronics, you won't get pressure to the calipers. the levers have hydraulic pressure to the unit where a switch is depressed which activates the unit which pressurizes the brakes. they are four separate closed loop systems. the unit itself was bad, so i yanked it. plus it loses something like 14 pounds off the top part of the bike.
