@@bethmann3461hey there! Thanks for the comment. You can basically use it anywhere, I would test it first though and make sure it doesn’t stain or discolor, but from my experience it’s pretty good. As for pets, it says it’s pet friendly once washed away and not in powder form. I’d just check it out on Home Depot and read the warnings for yourself because I can’t recommend something to you in that respect. I hope you understand. I do have pets though that are outside and I’ve had no problems if that helps. Thanks again.

That’s great BeenThere. I haven’t done that yet, but I have put zinc strips on my shop dormers where the gutter naturally runs onto the roof and I’ve always had major moss build up there. Haven’t had moss build up there since I did that :) super appreciate the comment! Thank you!

If this stuff works, why don't roof installers just add this as part of the roof installation? It makes no sense given that it can even be manufactured as a product to make it look close to the shingle color.

@samu3813 I agree Sam. I don’t know why either. I do know they make shingles that are mildew resistance or something like that which may help, but they cost a lot more.

Living in Florida for 20 years, I had to deal with moss and staining on both my barrel roof tile tile and the concrete decking surrounding my pool. For many years I just power washed both, assuming both were just caused by airborne dirt, pollen, etc. One day I started to presoak my pool deck with a bleach/water mixture before power washing it. The results were phenomenal! Clean and bright white! Then, I only had to clean it maybe once every 1-2 years. Then realizing that the black wasn't all airborne particulate, and the roof moss might be treated the same way, I started treating the moss on roof i had inherited. It had the very same effect, with no need to scrap the moss off. I just used a power spayer from the ground and soaked my roof with the mixture, everything died within days, and rain washed it all away. Motto is: you need to kill the algea, moss, etc, first, to prevent it from reestablishing itself. Plain water just feeds it. Please protect any plants that the bleach/water mixture may contact. I've never had moss, mold, or other issues since. Best regards.

They seem to have the best grip, but like I said, if it doesn’t feel right, then don’t do it. However, having said that, this technique works and the moss will go away. We do get some really good winds around here but yea, you’re right. I do have to go up there and leaf blow debri off, but it’s pretty quick and I limit my time up there. Hey David! Appreciate the comment and no I haven’t used that product but if they claim every 3 years, then that’s amazing. I’d definitely give it a shot. I know that CORRY’S last a while too, which is evident on my house. I’ll be applying again here in a few weeks for my spring treatment. So far so good. Hey there Patricia! Thanks for the comment and support. As for an answer, I’m not really sure. Your took of super steep and even I would have second thoughts about going up there removing moss. Mine is mostly 6/12 and even that can be scary at times with the wrong footwear. May I suggest looking up a roofing company out towards where you live and see if they offer any moss removal services. I know some do out here in the PNW and the price can be reasonable. If you were to attempt this on your own, first I’d be careful, but secondly I’d just try and scrape what I can, and if you have some shingles that are sticking up, you can get some roof tar, put it underneath the shingle and then press it into the tar. It will make it stick back down and as the roof heats up, will bind the two together like how it was before. That’s about all I have for that. It sucks that you’re having this problem and I hope this helps a little bit. Thanks again and good luck.

I’ll take your advice and call the roof company before I remove anything so they can see how the lack of sunlight/shade made my problem persist in the some sections and valleys. I am able to peer out my 2nd story window to get a close up look. Besides calling the roofing company, I’ll call the shingle manufacturer for advice. Ty

Those lifted roof shingles will have to be resealed using roof tar in a caulking gun. Otherwise, wind during storms could tear them off or blow water up underneath which would either leak into the house or damage the roof decking. Just put the tar on the underside of the tabs so they can reseal to the shingle below. Of course, I wouldn't want to do it myself on an 8:12 second-story roof.

Hey Len Mar! Yea you could totally do that. My thought process is depending on what scraper you use it could just get thicker but yea do what you can to save money. This job totally sucks, but it’s honestly the only way I know that isn’t abrasive on the shingles. I’ve seen guys pressure wash (which I think is approved) but normally it knocks a bunch of the sand. @@StoneyCreekSparkchaser no problem. Our cottage is "buried" in huge white and red pine trees and the needles and shade from the these monstrous trees all year round. The moss has started a few years ago and we would blow the needles off throughout the summer and into the fall. In Canada, we found this concentrated liquid called Wet and Forget. Apply twice a year to control.

Hey Nissman! You absolutely can. If I do recall, it tells you how much water to mix with it and what coverage it would do then. With super steep roofs, you can do that with a hose sprayer and that will get it up there in those hard to em reach spots. I’ve never tried this. And will stick with just laying down the powder because it’s really easy and I wouldn’t need to spray the entire roof surface. As for it blowing away. If done on a non windy day, it doesn’t blow around at all, especially if the roof is damp. All in all, it’s a great product and it works really well keeping the moss from growing. That’s not a bad idea. All you have to worry about is how you keep the shop vac on the roof. I have one and can always give it a shot, but I don’t have any more moss to remove! Appreciate the comment my friend!

I went o Home Depot’s website to see what you mean and yea it does say granules but rest assured it’s in a powdery form and should be good to go! Hey Shark. Im actually not sure. Now I’ve used outdoor bleach before to clean sidewalks and such and never had an issue If I followed the directions. I would suggest, if you want to try that, put it on a couple shingles in and area you won’t see easily and see how it turns out. It may take a day or week or so before you’re comfortable pressing forward. That’s about as good of an answer I can get for you right now. Hope it helps. Thanks for the comment and support :)

Thanks Gord for the tips. So far I’ve had zero loss from my treatments but will have to reapply this fall. I’ll look into this. For the copper piping… just the stuff used for plumbing?

@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Yes. It does not have to be new or clean. I first saw it on the shady side of a cottage asphalt roof. Worked perfectly.

2” zinc strip will do the same exact thing and not trap small debris. Place it just below the ridge cap the rain running across it and down the roof will not only kill the moss but also prevent it from growing. Coming to you from in the woods in the great state of Pennsylvania.

Yea so I thought about treating it first, but when I went up there to test scrape, it just came right off so to me it really wouldn’t of made a difference. Whatever works works right :) I did try a brush at first, but it wasn’t doing much and I was taking more gravels off than moss so that’s why I changed it up. Hey Mij! I think you’re correct and could make it easier doing it that way. I personally, wanted to have more control over each piece of moss I took off and I didn’t want to wear my roof out to much from uses a brush. But yea, if a brush works and a hose, go for it, but if it’s pretty severe and doesn’t want to go anywhere, then maybe scrapping it’s the best option. Anyhow. Vinegar 6 percent works almost as good as bleach and is much safer to use but your collected rainwater may smell like a salad.

Don’t put anything on there! Or, during rainy season treat the roof with some chemical but disconnect your water feed for a month or two and let it all rinse off onto the ground. Presumably you filter and treat the water somehow but you don’t want to add anything if it’s drinking water.

I’m definitely with you on that if it’s drinking water. Not worth it risking the biscuit :)

Darcy. I’ve had others on here ask this same question. I’m not a professional and will only do things that I’m comfortable with. Having said that, do not go up if it’s not safe. As for a solution… a few things come to mind. A hired professional is always recommended especially in severe cases, plus it takes the liability off of you. Also, if you want to attempt this. I’ve heard of others taking their hose and you can buy a sprayer that attaches to the end of it with a moss removing solution. So essentially, you spray it on there the best that you can, the moss will die and then over time it should start to come off with weather. Every situation is different and from the sounds of it, you may need some professional help in your situation. I hope this helps a little bit though and I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this. Trust me… I feel your pain Darcy :)

I was thinking exactly the same thing I don't want to get up on my roof. My moss is not too bad at all, but I want to try to nip it in the butt and I thought of just putting an attachment on my hose and maybe even putting baking soda in my dispenser and just spraying it and see what happens? I can’t find anything on the label, but I checked on Home Depot’s website and it says that’s it pet friendly when applied correctly and the rain washes it away. I have 2 dogs and I apply it on the roof and when it’s there I don’t worry about them. When it rains, it washes it away and dilutes it and I haven’t had a problem. I have to say though, my gutter drains go to an outfall that isn’t near any pet areas and such. So I would do whatever you feel comfortable with. I do know that this is used all over the place and I’m not sure of any real known issues. I hope this helps and thank you again for stopping by :)

That’s a good question. I really don’t know. I’m not sure if you’d want to put a 100% bleach solution on anything, so if it is, it’s probably a diluted outdoor bleach. I honestly thought the powder was a zinc compound that’s used to kill moss. Thanks my friend :)

Yessir Jim. Yea normally it’s not like that, but that garage used to be a carport with no sides or gutters. So when I put the sides up, I just had the gutter guy do his usual business. The comment about shingles over....I was just watching this old house or type show. They demonstrated how rain water will flow backwards up against the wood if a bracket or maybe in your case the shingle is not far enough over . It was interesting, now I will be checking my own house . Thanks for the videos , will be looking at more.

As to answer your question, I tried using a stiff brush but with how severe it was, I found myself pressing too hard on the roofing material which in turn was taking off more of the sand then moss. I found the plastic putty knives were less abrasive on the roof and I could concentrate the pressure to just the missed areas versus the others. Was it a PITA to do… of course, but it was worth it to me to rid the moss and lessen the damage to my roof. People can do what they want with what they have, so if a brush is what they want to use, then so be it. I was just trying to show an alternate way which worked good for me. My apologies if this was painful to watch and that you didn’t like it. I don’t expect to please everyone and I’m sorry again for doing that. Hey Henry! You’re absolutely right. When I purchased my house, I didn’t go with the anti-mildew shingles (something like that) which I should of done. And in my stupidity, I never put that powder on until a few years after so that moss started and got me to where I was when this video was made. Since then, I’ve kept up on my powder applications and haven’t had any loss since. So yea, so far it’s working well and keeping my roots clean. I think some people out there are worried about contaminating ground water/plants/animal bedding areas and they try and use more natural compounds. I don’t have that issue so like applying the powder. Anyhow, I definitely appreciate the comment and support and I hope you are having a wonderful Fall season :) Cheers Henry!

I’d agree with you on that as well Santiago. I haven’t put the zinc strips in, still debating. I live in the Pacific Northwest where moss is a true destroyer of roof systems. I new roof can get sever moss and cut the life in half costing homeowners a lot of money. Even the powder has metal in it I believe, so I’m not sure there’s a win win in this scenario. Maybe a bleach compound? I live in the forest and take very good care of my property. I love nature as much as anyone else does and take pride in keeping things as natural as possible. If you have alternate solutions I’d love to hear them :) This is just a standard practice in the nation for moss prevention and it works very well. Also, I’ve seen no adverse effects from my gutter outfalls where I have plants and such. It’s almost like it just targets the moss but more could be affected that I’m just not seeing. Anyhow. @@StoneyCreekSparkchaser don't use bleach, which will damage both root and gutter unless you rinse them with plenty water afterwards. Perhaps you can moisturize zinc power and let power stay/stick on roof.

Hey Judy! Thanks for reaching out and yes do not go on the roof if you are uncomfortable with it. No need to risk life and limb over some moss. Now to answer your question, I would totally spray some up there with your hose. I actually think what I used in the video, can be diluted and sprayed up there (directions might be on the package). If not, I know they make solutions you can spray up there. So I’d just spray it up there and a lot of it’s really bad. Then let it die and over time it will coke off with wind and rain. It just may take a while. Actually after it turns brown, you could probably take a hose and spray it up there with greater force to know it down. I doubt you’d do any damage, especially from that far away. What can damage the roof is using a pressure washer which can actually penetrate and slice through the shingles. I hope this helped and you have the right idea. You know you can always hire some wine to go up there and knock it off for you and then have them install zinc strips along the ridge line which will prevent moss from growing up there in the first place. I did spray some while cleaning my gutters from the ladder and it was coming off in chunks without even putting treatment on yet, but would take forever to do it all so I’ll treat it and see what happens 😂 Hiring someone would be the easy way to do it and I like making things harder than they should be so what’s the fun in that 😂🤣 actually I shouldn’t say I like making them harder I just usually tend to! Makes life more interesting 🫣😆 I really just need to not be such a chicken about heights and go on the roof!🙄 I’ll let you know how it turns out! Yea moss can be such a pain in the butt, but that’s what happens when we keep pushing it off. I’m so guilty of that and had to pay with 4 days of my life last year scraping!!! Lol. Luckily I just put some more of that stuff on my roof so I’m good to go. I never want to scrape again. Oh and yes, only go up there if your comfortable… moss isn’t worth a broken neck! Sometimes I even get a little nervous, especially with a 6/12 or 8/12 pitched roof. I only wear sneakers when I go on the roof. Seems to have the best grip and some people even cut egg crate foam you use for a mattress and tape that to the bottom of their shoes to get better friction. Or just scoot on your butt 😂😂😂 anyhow, yea I’d love to know the progress on this. Be careful and have a great rest of your week :)
