So when you do this and you get the black boxes where the arrows used to be... go back into regedit and remove the Value Data (%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50) from String value 29 and restart windows (restarting windows explorer in task manager will likely have the same effect). When you restart the arrows, and the black boxes will be gone.

it indicates that the icon is a shortcut to the main program thus it can be deleted without harming the original program looks like you're actually stupid

why would that work? Doesn't that mean mean you're basically not doing anything. I was getting the black boxes buit before seeing your comment just deleted the who Shell Icons value. I'll give your solution a try though, even though it sounds like it shouldn't work.
@@houledea1073 you know what, to be honest I can't remember if it did. I do have it setup to not show shortcut arrows but I can't remember what i did to get it that way. I'm pretty sure i didn't do this method. I'll get back to you because I think i followed the method from a different youtube video
My issue with this is that is kind of doesn't work, well for me. After following all the steps. It initially works. But the second I shutdown my computer. Then start it back up. All my icons are large black boxes. I go restart windows explorer, every time I restart the computer. So that is more inconvenient then having shortcut arrows
This worked at first but now the shortcut arrows turned into black squares. I tried clearing the temporary files but it still remained the same. Help😭😭
worked perfect, thanks a ton for this. Also i did it on Windows 11 and I added the minus sign before the 50 just incase, I'm not sure why that wasn't in the line he has us copy and paste (although i don't know if it was needed but better safe then sorry) Update: Works sometimes, but then other times I get black boxes instead of icons. I've already tried deleting temp files like someone suggested and it doesn't work.
bro i followed everything the way you showed up. but at the end of th process all my desktop shortcut icon got white and the shortcut icon didnt vanish. i got a huge problem by following your process. and then i deleted all the shortcuts from my desktop and i got another problem. all my games are not oppening. can you help me about that?
after u remove them and retsart again they will be replaced with bigger black squares. i got rid of the white boxes now im trying to remove the black boxes now that are way harder to get rid of and are way more annoying. i wish I just kept the small white boxes
In another video (from Sept 2021) to remove , delete the entire folder "Shell Icons"* that you created. Then restart. * If the folder "Shell Icons" was already present, then perhaps Myrage could be correct. *NOTE: If you do either of these, you're doing so at your own risk. I am not going to attempt either of these procedures. reference - RU-vid vid name - How to remove shortcut arrow from desktop icons in Windows 10, 11** Author - TechNTech **ALSO NOTE - This video and the other from TechNTech have different codes that you are supposed to copy/paste into key if you are attempting to remove arrow boxes.

this will happen. to fix this press the windows key and search run and then in the box to type next to open: put cleanmgr and then click your main drive and once a new thing pops up click on the boxes thumbnails and temporary files then click "Ok" at the bottom it will then click ok again on the new box that opens then let the bar finish loading and then restart your computer
@@marcosgaray2286 Hi again, every 2nd time I restart my pc, this issue occures again. If I remove the temp and thumbnails, the next time I start it up they are gone, but then once more and they are back. Do you have a solution for this, I should I just give up? :D
