Thank you for the video. I opened it up today to clear what I thought was a clogged impeller and it turned into it finally came apart and it was time to install the new one I had in the shop for year. It’s a Hayward and the diffuser would not allow me to use a strap wrench around the impeller and the inside I could use a smaller strap wrench on just came apart. By setting the armature in the vice I could then rotate the diffuser and all to work a larger strap wrench to remove it. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I am working on a Century pump and I noticed that there was a plastic center on the impeller that accepts a 15mm socket ,much easier to remove a stuck impeller with that feature.
not really impressed that you didnt get it off in the video, lol. Won't putting the motor's shaft into a vice damage it? I'm not sure I want to take my motor apart since it is working and just have a leak near the shaft in the wet end, any advice?
Have you tried putting 2 hose clamps on the shaft side by side to prevent scratching the impeller and using a pipe wrench or hammer to tap it lose?: This is just too much work just to get an impeller off. If the motor is old, might as well replace that while you're at it.
Make sure you are turning the impeller in the proper direction for removal. The impeller is designed to be self tightening on the motor shaft so that as the pump is loaded, the impeller doesn't come off of the shaft. Many pool pump motors, if not all, have left-handed threads for the impeller. The simplest way to determine the correct direction for removal is to hold the impeller and turn the shaft in the opposite direction it rotates while running.
put marine water resistant grease on the bearings, the end bells, all bolts, screws and the pump shaft and threads for the impeller when reassembling. Corrosion can be prevented, and then it all will come apart next time easily, a go easily together. The exposed pump shaft also rusts. I cleaned off the rust, primed it, greased it and slid heat shrink tubing it.. And put some grease on the motor shell and end bells so they also slide together and slip apart easier.
LOL This was hilarious to watch. He is correct that a rubber strap wrench (as he calls it) is the best tool for the job on a plastic impeller. I would however recommend taking off the non drive end (NDE) cooling fan first..if it's not internal!, using a vice grip on the NDE shaft and then use the mentioned tool. Don't try to wrap it around the small part of impeller as displayed that sits inside wear ring of diffuser...Put it around outer circumference of impeller where vanes are and a sharp twist anti-clockwise will do the trick everytime. Hope this helps somebody out there.
Like how the stubborn impeller was not removed....stator was not protected in vise. If someone is really serious about fixing their own pump, please view the spa guys video.
Hello, my name is Mark Ward and I have a Pentair 1 HP Pool Pump, I have taken the pump apart, the impeller was stuck, i was able to free it, however, it will run free when it is open, but, when I tighten the motor to the flange the pump will not spin, when I loosen the motor from the flange it runs great, the minute I tighten it. i will hum only.
Thanks for the demo. I did not realize that the impeller was threaded. I thought it was just a press fit. Have you even repaired a wet end with homemade acetone and ABS glue?
Not a good idea to clamp a stator in a vice without wrapping it in something to protect it. Another way to remove a frozen impeller is to cut/break the plastic impeller off. In the center of the plastic impeller is a brass nut, just use a wrench remove the nut. If it's tight, use a butane torch to heat the nut a bit...or even better, a torch with a can of mapp gas instead of butane. It burns hotter.
Would it be possible to shock the impeller loose with a sharp rap on the strap wrench handle? Sometimes things come loose with a jar when they are too tight for other methods.
Good video but would of been better if you had completed it by removing the rotor and showing a little more detail. Funny and good positive vibed video. I especially like the ending when you said "peace ya all"
Is there a way to this if the pump is attached to a well. The pump is vertical and I can get to the other end. Let me know what you think. It’s an ST01102
Hi guys, I ran into an impeller that wouldn't come off. Took the motor apart like you did, placed in a vice and used my strap wrench and broke it free. All it did was turn and turn and did not come off shaft. Any thoughts?
I replaced the bearings on my Flowmaster xp2 4 hp spa motor today. The rear end of the motor there is this spingy thing with a disc. In your video at point 5:28 you click it back in forth. When I replaced the bearing I broke a piece off that disc. When I re installed the spa it clicked on for a minute then shut off. Do I need to replace that part now that's it missing a piece? Could that be my problem?
Ha! thanks for this you saved me. I was all pumped (sorry for the pun) and ready to go when I reached the "if you're lucky it will come off" in another video... I did see at the end of my shaft a plastic sleeve that is a cracked. Hopefully it's not necessary. We'll see once the seal is replaced!
I would of wrapped my stator up to keep it from getting ruined from the vise but I do use more caution and maybe a little over board when it come to safety and me working on things spending money on things I screw up I don't like it regardless of who it belongs to
When he threw the channel lock pliers at the camera, he hit me in the foot, ouch. Why is the 'assistant' even in the video? He did nothing. Why is the impeller still attached even though the video title is "How to remove a stubborn impeller"?
Hahaha, I know this dudes obviously pretty cool, but he didn't even take the impeller off. Man I was really looking forward to him taking that impeller off, and then yep he's gonna take it off, oh wait, no, wait.. he's not going to take it off because its too hard? I aint hating though cause its actually a pretty cool clip.. PEACE. His assistant is top notch..
this would be a great way to do this if you had time and a vise. people in the field have none of this. I will always go to the wrench and chanel locks. takes me a minuet at best. just won't work for guys in the field.
iPHONE = $900 / Android $400+ everyone has one of those ;) VISE = $50 Harbor Freight :) Just saying you alway need tools to do any job, like if I wanted "rake my lawn" I would have to buy the rake even if Bob Villa shows me the best way to rake the lawn.....- Thanks for watching :) PEACE ;)
the impeller on my pl351 dually just spins, won't unscrew, i can hold the shaft from the other side to keep the armature from moving. and it will spin either direction, but won't unscrew. any thoughts?
yeah, you need to break it off, the impeller has a brass nut that is frozen on the shaft and now the brass nut is spinning inside the plastic impeller, so you have to break off the plastic impeller and then heat the brass nut a tiny bit while holding the shaft with vise grips and then spinning off the brass nut - you might have to read that twice but I have a video on this too
Hey I used an 11mm wrench and my big channellock plires and got it off with out messing it up it was stuck on but I got it without a vice or beating it open
That was very helpful! Thank you for the tip. I bought a 3" vise for $30 at Harbor Freight along with a set of rubber strap wrenches (only came as a set). Good thing it did as I would've opted for the smaller one which would'nt have worked. Also, you and your assistant def don't have the same energy levels. LOL I get it. He's just camera shy :D Take care!
Yall did way too much work.....jeez. just hold the back with a crescent wrench and the front with a big flathead screw driver. Turn the Cresent and itll come off
You never got the damn impeller off !!!!!! I have a super rusty old Goulds sprinkler pump ,that I am replacing Motor on! I dont need to save Motor! You put a damn 12 MM wrench on the shaft !!!!!! They have a notch on end for a wrench ! The thing is ,on my pump, the Impeller housing has razor sharp metAL, AND IF MY HAND SLIPS, i WILL SLIT MY WRIST OPEN ,LIKE A SUICIDE !!!!! I guess I will try to find a "Strap wrench " Crappy video overall
I feel like the other guy, Robert?, is there against his will. he definitely needs eye protection I thought for sure he was gonna get something stabbed through his eye. anyway, this is a terrible video.
not really impressed that you didnt get it off in the video, lol. Won't putting the motor's shaft into a vice damage it? I'm not sure I want to take my motor apart since it is working and just have a leak near the shaft in the wet end, any advice?
