Removing varnish can be necessary for many reasons, and is pretty scary! In this video I go over a process I have been using on my artwork for years. It covers a basic process of removing varnish from the surface of a painting. This is applicable on all flat, smooth painted surfaces where a removable, solvent based varnish has been used.
I use MSA varnish w/UVLS (Satin) by Golden as it is very easy to remove and is very gentle on the artwork. I don't use an isolation layer personally, as that layer would not be removable. I've had situations where the artwork has been damaged during shipping, meaning that I have not only had to redo the varnish but also repaint a section of the artwork. This would not have been possible if I had used an isolation layer.
There are many variables that will effect how you do this process, so always test first, and work on small areas at a time. You can email me at carla@carlagraceart.com or comment below with any questions.
