Even at the end of the video I can still see the old lettering, presumably because of the different rates of oxidation under the letters. Presumably a cutting compound is needed to get that off?
Thanks for the question, Spelunkerd. Depending on the length of time that the letters have been in place, the UV rays will definitely have an impact. You are correct that a cutting compound and polish will often be required. However, the color of the gelcoat also comes into play, and often darker colors will show this issue less than white. The differences will even out and become less noticeable over time.
Nope! Not if you apply and remove according to directions. Depending on how long the lettering was on there, you may see some slight ghosting of the old letters though due to gelcoat fading though.
How about removing very old (1980's) wide and narrow pattern pin stripping, in order to repaint boat? I would imagine wet sanding with course wet or dry would be about the only way to get this crap off. Then you would have to fill in heavy scratches with primer and fine sand before painting. Some guy said to use a torch and move it back and forth quickly. I think that would likely burn the boat. Any body got a suggestion?
Hi Zed. Great question! Sandpaper will just make a gummy mess. Instead, use a hairdryer and plastic scraper. Warm up a small area to soften the adhesive, then it should easily scrape up without any damage to the boat. Follow up with some acetone to remove any residual adhesive. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for letting us know, gary. All is fine on our end, so it seems to be something local. A couple possible reasons it could be happening: 1. restart your browser and/or clear your cache. 2. You may have RU-vid set on "restricted" viewing. I'm thinking it's probably the former given you had to turn off adblocker. Give it a try.

@@gary24752 Yay! Thanks for letting me know. Hopefully the tips will help with the other sites you're having an issue with as well. Like you, I'm suspecting it has something to do with the ad blocker and/or toggling it on/off. (Not an IT person, but I do my own stunts sometimes!)
Um! Well ok, I guess we all look dumber than we look. So what I got out of this video is that if you want to take new numbers off of a boat I should first buy stuff you sell. Otherwise I could most likely just pull them off without spending any money?
