As a self learner for many years, I can tell you that, this approach is the most effective and time-saving method for illustration! A lot of professional artists have kept it secret to the other learner. I read many issues of ImagineFX magazines, and no one really share this kind of approach, instead they just blur away the details and useful information. I am now really glad to learn this method finally properly, and it help me paint a great deal faster and keep my works consistent. Thank you, Marco, truly this is the most important tips for all the beginning artists on RU-vid so far.

For real. I really hate how most of them don't break it down like this. What's the point of even buying the magazine when we get better tutorials for free on RU-vid? I really only buy the magazine for inspiration and to keep up on things- when I feel like it.

Ah this is the kind of thing that was really lacking when I was beginning, not knowing where to start, or what to start from. This kind of handholding approach you see more often in actually paid classes with a huge time alloted to it, and people starting out don't even know that it exists most of the time. A lot of channels talk about fundamentals on a high level, but don't dig in what it means to do them on a moment-to-moment basis for the markmaking process. I'm sure this is gonna be a godsend for a lot of people, so accessible on youtube. I apreciate all the effort put into the rhetoric, pacing and clarity as you go. nothing is left to be misinterpreted, but the foundation is there for everything to be expanded upon, for all skill levels. Amazing stuff Marco.

@Medic, Im Engineer I did that years ago xD But I had to delete first original shortcuts and set the ones that were comfortable and logical for me to use (h and v for horizontal and vertical flip) and < and > for rotation. But that's not universal for everyone - the fastest way in a tutorial to make it work for everyone is the one click on the navigator :)

Late to the party here but I'm confused about something--in a couple of more recent RU-vid videos you've demonstrated painting with value-only first. However, a while back you made a video where you spent quite a while explaining why you prefer to start with colour. (Which I think makes more sense to me too.) Have your preferences changed or is there a specific reason you use greyscale first here? Regardless of the reason, absolutely loving your work, really meaty and helpful, thanks so much!

This is probably one of the most helpful videos on rendering paintings I've watched so far! I do not like painting greyscale before color, but this as way more useful lesson than the others I've watched, with a even better explanation than the one my teacher gave me. The warm color trick on the skin is something that I'm stillmconfused about because I never know how to put it on without making the skin very very weird, but I think it is just a matter of practice with portraits and 3D surfaces.

Every digital artist I know uses multiply mode and I never do. Not for any particular reason, but mostly because I forget it exists? Oops. I'm definitely going to give this method a go, to see how I like it. It's weird, because. Using normal mode sort of feels like acrylic painting, where as layering darker colors on top of each other sounds more like watercolor. And I've been using watercolor far longer than any other medium.

5:03 Flipping your canvas is important, but the edit menu is not the ideal solution. That will actually make your program recalculate the entire canvas and flip the pixels, which takes some processing power depending on canvas size and layer number. It's better to use the buttons under the navigator window to just flip the view or go to View > Rotate/Flip

Escher's blue eyes😆) I just may have too much of a pixeled mind.
