When it comes to faster Cycles renders, in my opinion the Turbo Tools addon is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else. Not only does it make the renders around 5x faster, but it also has probably the most advanced temporal stabiliser available in any software. Definitely some great tips in this video too though.

Just a note, the actual file format and size of your textures, do not matter. Ultimately every file format has to be inflated and have values stored per pixel on the GPU. What does matter is the bit depth and overall resolution of your image. 16 bit images will use way more vram than 8 bit, because it's storing twice as much information per channel.

The quality upgrade i had from just switching from a 1060 to a 3080ti still blows my mind. Beeing able to change stuff and see it immediatly is so crucial. I may have misunderstood, if so I appoligise. The format of your texture will not affect the amount of VRAM used. It will be smaller on disk (so could be faster to load into memory) but once in memory then it's simply a matter of the total number of pixels multiplied by the bit depth of the image. And an 8 but jpeg with 8 bits of transparency will be the same size in memory as an 8 bit png with 8bits of transparency. This is true of every file format. The only way to make it use less VRAM is to reduce the number of pixels (as you mentioned) and/or reduce the bit depth of the image. Cranking the off camera dicing well above 8 can reduce geometry greatly, although objects behind the camera but seen in reflections will appear much lower res, so it depends on your scene as to what you can get away with. Another good one is HDRI, when used simply for lighting it does not need to be large. 512*512 or 1024*1024 is fine. Only if you are going to have it visible to camera does having higher res matter.
@davidkohlmann
@davidkohlmann 4 месяца назад
I didn't explained it as good as you did and it depends. You can see the effect in the final file size. If png and jpg has closely the same file size, your gpu probably needs to calculate the same amount of informations. But often, when you use assets, you get textures with 16 bit or higher and other useless informations like higher dynamic ranges (exr for example) and websites like I showed, convert this to lower bits and ignores other information. BTW your tip with the HDRI is great, I use this always like you said, because loading 16 or 32k hdris is horrible on my system 😂 Thx anyway for your explanation to this, so everyone can check this.

It has to do with binary code, I can't explain why it's like that but just look at ram for example, you get same number relationship. It has a lot do with bits, cpus for example are also 8 -16 -32 -64 bits, same pattern. A lot of softwares work much better when sampling follows same rules too. @RomboutVersluijs
@RomboutVersluijs 4 месяца назад
After reading some more posts. I don't understand why you render showed a difference when you set transparency to 4, while total max was 3. With a total max of 3 transparency should never be able to do 4. Yet in your renderz at 3 it showed black but when you set it to 4, it became transparent. That's is quite weird
@davidkohlmann
@davidkohlmann 4 месяца назад
To be honest, Iam also not sure what the "total" stands for, I just recognized, even in the standard setting it's set lower then some settings below, so it's not a cap over all. It has to be some other reasons to this.
@cgnerd8036
@cgnerd8036 4 месяца назад
@@davidkohlmann Total is the maximum bounces each of the paths can make (not total combined). So if you set all paths to 1024 and then set the total to 4, each of the paths will be limited to 4. To be honest paths don't make a massive difference, and in a lot of cases turning them down will actually product much noisier and slower renders.

For every detail you add to your scene you have to add render time depending on what your final render should look. (in terms of quality) Dark scenes with volumatrics, particles, lot of lights etc. Take a lot more time to render crisp images. But generally leave the threshold at 0.1 and samples for your special projects should be at least 512. If you render animations you probably need to increase this to 1024 to avoid denoise flickering. Maybe 512 are enough with higher resolutions. Maybe light path reduction to compensate the higher render times a bit

Pleas don’t render in 4k!! Just use an upscaler. Also use FlowFrames and interpolate half of the frames. Thanks

This sounds like "we fix it in post", but not like the real solution.

All PCs are potatos if you don't optimize the model, textures and render. A truth that is classically left behind by digital illiterates.

@@davidkohlmann Well.... i have been working on 3D since 1995. To my experience, In every PC iteration, we just raise our expectations, overload the model and end up with exactly the same 3h rendertime lol.

@@constantinosschinas4503 of course you can push everything to the limit. If you watched the cgi vs real video from Blender guru (the ready player 1 scene with blood out of the lift) his 2x 4090 ran out of vram😂 But most scenes and projects can be handled easily and rendered in seconds.
