This build series is all about how to renovate your homes exterior. If you plan on tackling a DIY project like this in the future, it might be beneficial to watch this series. Part 1 is all about the demolition and preparation for the future LP Smartside siding installation. This series will definitely have some twists and turns, and like most remodels...does not go as smoothly as I planned it would.
I don't want to scare you, but no remodel goes as planned...and you always spend more money than you think!!
Thankfully LP Helped out with the project by Sponsoring it, so please go check them out with the link below and learn about the power of durability when using LP SmartSide. Their support made this video possible to create for you.

@WoodenSkye ~ First of all, Kyle is the landlord and it is his responsibility to upgrade the property as necessary. Greg is not making out like a bandit. He is working. He is not getting anything for free. Why should his rent be raised? As a tenant he is caring for the property that Kyle has invested in. While I am happy that Kyle is not a slum lord I do not see why the rent should be increased just because Kyle is doing his duty as a responsible landlord.

I used LP smartside on my house when the vinyl siding was destroyed by golfball sized hail 2.5 years ago. Insurance only paid for the 2 sides that were damaged & the roof. I paid out of pocket for the upgrade of the siding materials to LP & upgraded windows. I did all of the work myself to offset the upgrades, while most of my neighbors used storm chasing contractors. They mostly got conned into replacing the vinyl with more vinyl. I’m not bragging but my house is the best looking house in the neighborhood. Moral of my story is that LP smartside is very user friendly and easy to work with.

RR Buildings on another note I did not need to pull a permit in Denver, CO for siding & windows if I as the homeowner was doing the work myself. My roofer did need to pull a roof permit. Definitely a jurisdictional type of thing. I find it strange that I’ll need to pull a permit for flatwork when I widen my driveway. Something to do with stormwater runoff 🤷‍♂️

@@michael-michaelmotorcycle In Florida, I do not need to pull a permit if I'm working on my own home that I live in, but if I'm working on one of my rental houses, which I also own but don't live in, I have to pull a permit.

@@michael-michaelmotorcycle+ Having been screwed, blued and tattooed by an insurance company, they are require by law to bring your home up to before loss condition. Since they can't match siding, they are required to replace the entire exterior surface treatments. What my insurance company did was to send in a contract claims adjuster that was near impossible to make contact with. When I finally got his estimate, it was low by over $20k. I had a deck built on 6x6 posts and 2x12 stringers with 2x6 planks for decking. They based the repair using 4x4's, 2x6's and 5/4 deck boards. Insurance companies suck. Not everyone can take time off of work to deal with the claims process and attempt getting your life and home back in order.
@michael-michaelmotorcycle
@michael-michaelmotorcycle 4 года назад
Gunga Dinn agree 100%. My initial estimate was under 10k. After fighting & screaming for nearly 8 months they sent out a 3rd party adjuster and when all was said & done my claim was 38k. They wanted to match the vinyl siding and I did not want to put vinyl back on - also they wanted to replace 3 windows, which is where I paid some out of pocket for upgrades to the siding & all windows. The hailstorm was on May 13 2017 and my roof was installed the week of Christmas that year. I finished up the siding myself on my days off and it was well after the anniversary of the storm. Bottom line is that people are impatient and they just see dollar signs and most people are unaware of the work/labor involved or material costs. Most of my neighborhood was rebuilt in the first 4-6 months after the storm by storm chasing contractors and the houses & roofs look slapped together. My house was one the last houses to be finished and it looks great, because I would not settle for their lowball antics.

I definitely feel your pain, Kyle. The mighty struggle with the small roof above the front door defines EVERY 'home improvement' project I've ever done! I was laughing -- not at you -- but because I've been there and done that myself! Usually alone. Anxious to see how this project comes out, and I'm glad you decided to do it the right way. It'll be a good decision in the long run.

I gutted and renovated my house in Houston, permits werent that expensive and every inspector was friendly and gave me hints on what I could do better. We're lucky that the building dept here is pretty good. There was plenty of unpermitted bullshit in this house from the previous handyman, which was a big reason for redoing every-damn-thing and getting it inspected.

Kyle, you’re going to love the new siding. I just helped a friend side his new cabin with LP siding and it looks great. The siding we used has two choices for starting the bottom row, I’ll be watching to see how they do it. One is a foam material and the one is a strip of siding. Hopefully they’ll show the difference of how hot / cold weather effects each.

Spray Foam for sure! It will pay for itself and make the house much more comfortable. Plus, it is super easy now with everything open. Replace the porches too. Nothing worse than trying to open a door in the rain and snow with no cover.
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 4 года назад
I'm not a huge fan of lightweight wrought iron, but those porches played a big role in giving the house its character. Without them, it would just be a generic box. I'm also inclined to preserve the windows; they don't mass-produce that style anymore and anything from Home Depot (nice as some of them may be) is just going to give it that "Home Depot renovation" look.

You have to wonder what the original builder was thinking when he decided to plant the house foundation where he did. You can see he was short on space between the driveway and the back door having to opt for the very short step way either left or right of the door and then the garage door opening is just just of the line of the wall of the house. There's so much extra space in the front yard ! All he needed was an extra 4 feet to make the rear entry more sensible and better use of the area between the garage and the house. FOR SURE, you have to insulate at this stage without question. All of the labor to insulate is mostly done...it would be a serious humane violation not to and don't forget the attic space. Thanks for sharing. (Nice basement).

House was never insulated or wrapped. Current cladding is cedar board-and-batten. I've been sweating bullets trying to figure out how to go about insulating (didn't want to create a moisture trapping issue) though after this video I think I'm going to take the time to remove all siding, sheathing and properly sheath with OSB, wrap the house and reapply cladding. Hello Kyle, I like your slide hammer nail puller! I have had one of the old style ones for many decades and although they work great they have such a narrow jaw and hinge point that resharpening them is only possible a very few times. I will have to do what you did to a set of my nippers. The trick with them anymore is to try to find those that have a chisel bevel to enable them to grip flush with the surface. I did find a pair but it wasn't easy several years ago. Love this video as it is truly real world. I hope you don't leave the cavities open anything would beat that. Toss in some batts before sheathing at least. An old house may not be worth the foam cost but some insulation would be soo much better. Take care. Doug

Some sporadic termite damage to fix as well...

as a residential remodeler here in n.y we run into the no insulation issue more than anyone would like too lol we usually just do fiberglass batts or spray foam if we are going from inside the house and the home is 2x4 construction. One of our codes is homes need to be brought up to atleast an r21 so when its 2x4 construction we eaither have to foam it or add 2in ridgid insulation board on the outside

Just remember, prep, prep, prep & get extra tips (as it sets up quick if stop spraying, & b/c spraying cavity from outside.....don’t think would need to worry about fumes etc...which is a plus).
