Hello Grass Daddy, Let me start by saying I am impressed with not only you Amazing Lawn Job but your Video making. Bravo, we bought a home in central florida where there was 3 inches of leaves on 2 acres of lawn for years.... two years later and 17 trees cut down and a million pounds of seed and fertilizer it looked good, I came up with the bright idea 2 weeks ago to put sprinklers in and after digging the trenches it has rained for 2 weeks straight and now all the dirt displaced to side is growing grass and weeds through because of all the rain...I am ready to jump!

Where do you think the chemicals disappear when you have killed all the grass? You poison your soil and groundwater that then gets into lakes, etc. But you have a nice lawn, it's important!
@rphandyman6092
@rphandyman6092 6 лет назад
More importantly than growing a great looking lawn, dont you think your children's health is the priority? I would think that having them run across and play in the areas where you're putting chemicals down cannot be a good thing...

I'm a Canadian temporarily in the UK with my British fiancee. She has a small front yard and a medium backyard. The lawn was completely overgrown in the front. almost all weeds. The gravel and slab driveway was completely invisible under the foliage. I mowed, hedge trimmed, and snipped everything as low as I could. Got my hands in the short grass and literally lifted massive sheets of either thin vines or really long and fallen over grass. Eventually I got it all relatively short. I weeded the driveway and trimmed the small trees. The backyard was a nightmare. Completely overgrown thorny vines along the entire border of the yard. The thorn vines coiled everywhere, some spanning over 40 feet under the lawn all across the yard. The main bushes of thorn vines stood 6ft tall and about 5 feet outward. The lawn is MUCH larger looking with all that removed. I trimmed trees back, and removed bushes and small unappealing trees. The lawn needed to be mowed 5 times, raked and mowed again. The problem I have is that the grass is very viney and it lays flat so the mower wont cut it. Raking it has been very difficult and doesn't seem to be working well. Tips would be much appreciated. I'm at the point where it's at least under control, but I want to just nuke it and kill everything. The transformation so far has been incredible. I'd love to give her a decent yard that makes the neighbours jealous.

Thank you for making this process possible for a lawn novice. We had sod put down before we moved into our formerly abandoned, newly renovated house. After 2 years (with a no chemicals approach) the whole front lawn died. It seemed hopeless until one morning, I searched for what to do with a dead lawn and it brought me to your videos. I studied your recommended playlists, wrote down and followed each step (Using sod grade seed, rolling it.) The little green sprigs are starting to pop up and I feel like a proud mama. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and breaking it down into easy steps.

Thanks bud. You made it easy to understand and gave me confidence that "I can actually do this". I've been hesitant, and going back and forth on whether to do it myself or pay someone. Some of these landscaping guys make it seem more complicated. My lawn is thick, weed free, and looks great compared to all my neighbors, but the previous owners (I bought this house a year ago) used several different types of seed, therefore the lawn is different shades of green and has different textures (thin fescue, KBG, and rye) throughout. Luckily it's mainly just the front lawn with all these different varieties of seed. The back is almost entirely KBG and looks good. I'm going to start it this week. I'm in Minnesota so with KBG taking 30 day's to germinate, I need to start August 1st.
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
Drewg351 awesome! That was the goal. It's a lot of hard work but it's not complicated work just physical. Let me know how it turns out!
@Drewg351
@Drewg351 6 лет назад
Grass Daddy, definitely will. I'm going thru all your videos now. If only I could choose between KBG vs going with tall fescue. Both have their strong points. Living in Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis, I suspect both would do ok, with KBG probably handling the cold winters a little better. Decisions, decisions. Thanks again bud.

Thanks for the tips! I'm laying down turf lawn. Will it work the same for if I cover the dead lawn with peat moss then lay the turf? Or should I just lay the turf over the dead grass straight away? Or should I Till the dead grass? Please help! 😁
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 5 лет назад
If you are laying down sod you ideally want to have a perfectly level lawn. Many times they'll use a sod cutter to cut out the old stuff. The nice part is doing it that way you don't have to spray weeds, etc because they are pulled up root and all. With sod I would skip the peat moss altogether, and I would NOT till the lawn. Pros have the tools to ensure it's level but most homeowners who kill and till end up with a super lumpy lawn. Unless you get all the old material out it will mix in and as it decomposes it'll leave lumps.

@elliottalderson9349
@elliottalderson9349 5 лет назад
Fernando Mendoza I’m surprised that you have not received any returns on your question? I’d like to comment on Your St Augustine inquiry .. Generally the best approach to St. Augustine installations is “plugging it “ By that I mean to say, graft the flats by breaking into 6”x6” patches and lay those patches (about a foot apart) into-a prepared surface and maintain the space with frequent watering. If you need to repair a n existing lawn thar has a portion of health S .A.grass, carefully dig patches of healthy grass and transplant it to the needed areas after you prepared that soil. Allow those areas that you harvested transplant material to “heal” and fill in just as you nurture the transplanted area with care in the same way. We used to use Sulfate of Ammonia found in various Garden Supply Stores for periodic greening of our St. Augustine. Always set your blades high on the mower (to level out the cut) instead of shaving the lawn down to the root. S. A. Grows more horizontal than fescues and other blade grasses. Hope my reply (albeit 6mos. late) imparts some inspiration? Via con Dios

Good info....I am a rookie at this so far I renod two different areas of my yard. One came out awesome and the other is only a week old so there jury is out. In both areas I used a grass seed mix for my location mostly fescue and bluegrass and some rye. I was under the impression that a mix was better for health of the lawn...I guess not yours is incredible. Also in both cases instead of roundup I scraped up the existing old lawn spread new top soil then seeded. I did use peat moss over the top of the seeds.
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
Mixes are great for different conditions. Most likely something will grow whereas if you plant a single strain and it doesn't like your conditions it won't come in very good.
@richp5064
@richp5064 6 лет назад
Grass Daddy I didnt realize they have sod quality seed tho I am using Pennington smart seed mix. I looked at the super seed store...it is quite a bit more of an investment. I might get a small bag to try out first to see if I see a difference. I plan on doing about 10k square feet more of my yard this fall
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
Rich Proto so sod quality is the amount of weed seeds in it not the type of grass. POA annua and POA triv are grassy weeds but since they are grass it's not listed as a weed on labels - instead it is "other crop". Sod quality seed should have 0 weeds and other crop. Box store types will have a % weed and % other crop but the amount varies per bag. Some are better than others.
@richp5064
@richp5064 6 лет назад
Grass Daddy well that's quite deceiving and informative....thanks for the info

Grass Daddy one more question should I just go with 1 type of grass or a mix? The area im planting next gets lots of sun a good 8 hours a day.
@mikemalnar5095
@mikemalnar5095 6 лет назад
So I think I am going to do a renovation on my front lawn this year. Question is I have a moderate Poa issue in the lawn. Will those seeds be growing strong with my new seed also in the fall? I have a light brown tint to my grass now from all the Poa turning brown already. Located in NE Ohio. Going to seed with a KBG mix this fall. Thanks
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
Great question! Yes - but if you use Tenacity (mesotrione) when you seed it will help. I use the Scotts Starter Fertilizer with weed control because it has it mixed in already. It will let the KBG germinate but will prevent the poa from germinating. Then when the KBG is thick enough for regular pre-emergent, put that down. You'll still get some poa, but next spring you can use Tenacity to kill it while feeding your KBG aggressively, and it'll fill in those spots. So it takes some technique but it's doable!

I overseeded last fall, pretty good results. But I have lots of crabgrass to address this year (I'm near Philadelphia). After I put down crabgrass pre-emergent, am I correct in saying the barrier will prevent new good seed from germinating as well? In other words, there's no point overseeding in the spring after I use pre-emergent and start working on my crabgrass, correct? I just save that for the fall and deal with the bare patches where the crabgrass was dominant until then?
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
Ian Ivey correct. You should be able to get the existing grass to thicken up to hide the spots the crabgrass was in if it wasn't too bad.

Thank you so much for the teaching. Finally i found a site that have step by step i lawn care. To have a nice lawn ....that is my dream all along. It is notthat i can afford to pay for a lawn care srevice but the feeling is not the same when you just sign a check to pay and to see what the out come from your own hard work. I do not know that i can ask further question down the road through you or not. But so far I am so greatful. . Already sub and like!

Good video but if you want a really good lawn forget the starter fertilizer instead mix one to one peat and quality manure spread the same as peat. The manure should not be soaking wet and it should have white fungal growth in it. Once the seed is down rake it in, the manure will lose its smell after a few hours it contains all the enzymes needed to make the seed germinate and will have bacteria and fungi that the soil needs.

Great video with awesome information thanks! How long do you think this might take on 1/3rd acre lot with 13,000 sq ft of grass? Probably a crazy large project I'm guessing. Also that pump sprayer looks terrible lol, no fan tip? If I'm not mistaken that's the harbor freight 4 gallon right? Is it worth the $20?

Would you recommend to use an arrorator as well during this time?

That would increase results but isn't necessary if you topdress. So if you have the means go for it but if not don't let it keep you from renovating.

Great video. How long do you wait to mow it? Also, if overseeding, would you still use the peat moss on top of existing grass? Thanks.

When overseeding you would scalp the lawn, seed, and then mow when the existing lawn gets to 2inches. This prevents it from shading the new grass. It's scary to walk on the baby grass at this stage but it's worse for it to get smothered. Peat moss depends on how thin the lawn is, most of the time you don't need it on an overseed unless it's really thin.

Noticed powdery mildew on my grass. Bummed out my lawn was coming in so nice and now there’s spots that the grass looks dead. Any suggestions how to get rid of it and what might be the reason for the mildew?

Where did you get the peat moss? Did you have it delivered or did you buy bags of it? If so how many bags did it take?

Great job. One question: When doing a full renovation, is it not necessary to remove the dead thatch/existing sod after it dies, and prior to seeding, starter fert, peat moss?
@GrassDaddy
@GrassDaddy 6 лет назад
You don't have to completely remove it but you don't want a matted mess. It's best to scalp and rake but there will be stubs of grass left over which is ok
