the doorbell chime in my mother's house is the original chime and she and my father bought the house in 1963 I am surprised that the chime has lasted as long as it has.

Thanks, I located the transformer in my HVAC closet and sure enough, one of the wires was broken. Probably happened during HVAC service.

OK, so you found that one of the original wires in the pair is broken, so you use another pair, but don't show how it is connected. I assume that it was one of the other pairs running down to transformer "why the second cable (looks like two to me)/some other low voltage system". "Move the toner" isn't zoomed in enough to see which wires are being used...so, we now have a pair running from transformer to the doorbell. "Sounds like a doorbell" ...you then go to the chime … without explaining where the wires run. It seems obvious that this must be another pair of wires, but what connects the doorbell to the chime????? @3:21 it looks like the doorbell pair has been removed, and is simply screwed back in ...I have no idea how the chime is connected to the switch!
@BriannaBeastMode
@BriannaBeastMode 2 года назад
This video is completely useless. There's a reason the second wire wouldn't work. At the switch, one wire comes from the transformer, the other would go to the doorbell chime. If you ran both wires to the transformer like the video shows, all you would be doing is electrocuting yourself when you pressed the doorbell button.

They didn't turn off the circuit breaker for doorbell in the video. Is it necessary?

this may sound like a dumb question but nobody said anything about shutting the power off before installing doorbell?
@emnuc30

Ramon Ibarra yea, but it's only 21V which falls below the 50V limit for energized work, so no harm to work on.
@AndyMarr29
@AndyMarr29 5 лет назад
@@emnuc30 Right, but later he checked to see if the transformer was working - if it wasn't, he could have received full 220 voltage/shock when he first touched the wires at the door. Right?

We don't know where our wired doorbell goes to. Don't see any transformers. Would it be in the attic?

Cheap alternative to the radio thing is to hook up an old low power power supply from a laptop or something and then test the other end of the wires with a multimeter.
@CodyFlock
@CodyFlock Год назад
An even cheaper alternative (free) connect the wires together on one end and then check for continuity on the other end between two wires.

It's a clever solution to use the existing wires, but it's specific to this (old) house! Therefore, it's not useful to 99.99% of us.

This doesn't make any sense. So the brown wires get used at the transformer, where do they go? The video shows them going to the door to be reused for the doorbell. What connects the doorbell to the chime in the hallway?

Most of the time, people have things that caused it to break, but when they find this video, it doesn't work because there is a different reason to which the doorbell broke.
