Do you have drafts coming through your Double Glazing, then this video shows you how to replace the hinges. Takes about 20 minutes and can be done from inside the house, no need for ladders. But remember the window can be heavy so you might need someone to help you

Thanks very much for this video mate, it gave me the confidence to do my own after a hinge broke. Couple of tips for anyone wanting to do this. Make sure you can remove a the rusty screws before committing to the project, solve this issue first. Even small widows can be very heavy so remove the glass first, only takes 5 mins. Upvc screws are self tapping so even if your new hinge has different hole placements you don't need a drill, a little force on the screw will get it going. When removing the window leave the middle screw on the upper bracket until last as this will hold the window in place

I've got the issue on a window where there is a gap between the seal and the frame just like this. How does replacing the hinges fix this? It would indicate the existing hinges are broke/don't pull the frame in close enough? Just trying to understand why a new hinge will fix my problem.

@@matlockmeat I’m looking at doing this repair too. Lots of windows in my house have the same issue with the seal. I suspect the wear causes the rear edge of the window to over-rotate due to wear in the pivots making this gap pronounced…now to find a website selling the hinges!

Note: make sure the new hinges you get are the same depth as the old ones - or your (in this case 'my'!)window might not fit back in the frame. This means you (meaning 'I')have to put the old ones back on! Also, NIck says "I won't deny the window is quite heavy" - this is in fact an understatement - it it frickin' heavy and tbh it could do with a body on a ladder outside to help take the weight (admittedly Nick says this in the description of the video). A final piece of advice - put a folded up towel or piece of material on the window ledge to stop it getting scratched (and thus requiring repainting...)when you have to put the window down due to it being so heavy (see above comment :D )

Any way repositioning of hinges to where you said they should have been (new drill holes were necessary) solved the problem. Would be able to tell on windy day how tide it is but look promising. I re hinged my windows this weekend. Measuring them up is really important. The hardest measurement to take is the depth I recommend removing the hinge and measuring the depth. I was lucky because 13.5mm was all that was available. I guestimated it would be 17mm as I measured it in situ. When I got the hinges out I found out that guess was wrong but lucky me had bought the 13.5mm.

As somebody with experience, this is not a DIY job in my opinion but if you have to do get two people, the weight of the sash fully glazed can be very very scary if you have never done this, it is amazing how slippy upvc can be and especially if you are on the second floor,, Also i have had to drill a hole in the new hinge simply because its plastic and the holes wear away, so you drill new holes to get a strong bite again, good video ,

I do have one occuring problem I trust I can get the Hinges. Just one thought re drilling holes, perhaps once used screws into plasti do not always find the required bite. good to re drill. Just done this successfully with Screwfix hinges. When I had removed the window I popped out the beading around the glass and removed the double glazed unit. Much easier to put the window back in without the weight of the glass. When the new window frame is safely screwed down and closed just add the pane back in and put the beading back on. This may not be possible with some very old double glazing where the beads are on the outside of the window.

Problem is that the rivet holes are too big to then take screws. Is there a way of using the holes in the UPVC created by rivets with screws or bolts? Something like these ? Or should I pack the hole with glue and then re-drill once set ?

O boy: That was pretty painful to watch but well done for seeing to the end. You should have de-glazed it and used self tapping screws. That would have made everything easier.
@thomasbliss73
@thomasbliss73 3 года назад
@Leigh Garfield if the hinges are ok, it might be that the glass unit needs a toe and heel, best thing is change hinges and re glaze with a toe and heel with the window closed so you can line it up. One last thing: not all hinges are the same, you have standard guage and slimline ones also the screws will be in different places, there are fire escape hinges, easy clean, top and side hung, you should only fit fire escape (with or without easy clean function) really on a side hung window like this one, the hinges will say top and bottom on them (most of the time!) make sure you get that correct first time, once forced they won't work correctly you should line up the guide edge on the sash or the sash won't close. Oh self tapping screws, check the size of screw you have in the original and dont go bigger than that including the tapping end!

@@SimpleNickVideos I did it yesterday. Talk about snags. I had to drill new in the frame and window. Drilled the window and there was metal directly behind the plastic. Drilled through that, then lined up the height of the hinges, went to screw them in place and the screws wouldn't go in! The piece of metal is previously drilled has moved 🤦🏼‍♂️ it was freely moving around inside the window. Then the top screws were spinning, hard to find short fat screws in lockdown. Got that sorted but the hinges were 2mm out on the height and the mushroom cams were scraping the frame when closing the window. Not a huge problem. The new mechanism I bought on ebay and was going to fit has longer mushroom cams. I fitted one on one of my other windows and had to crop the frame to get the window to close, another story. I would say no one ever gives them a shot of wd40 every now and then ,then they get clogged up with grit and grime that eventually gets stiff causing the arms on the hinge to bend and its then the window doesn't close against the frame.also when the hinge starts to get stiff the pressure comes on the handle causing them to eventually break off,so a little maintenance every springtime helps IMO

Great video but how do you measure the hinges and find the correct ones so you don't have to re-drill holes. Do the hinges just slot into place or is there a certain way to line them up just in case they have to be drilled.

To me (15 years of fabricating, fitting and repairing pvc windows and doors) this lad is more of a DIY er when it comes to repair windows. He made a huge mistake by letting go of the sash without putting at least one screw it the top hinge, we was very lucky that the sash didn't dropped out from frame. A very important fact is to know the stack height of the hinge you need to replace... 13 or 17mm... and you need to make sure that when you fit the new hinge on the sash, the corner end of the hinge sits at the exact distance from the sash as the old hinge did, otherwise the sash won't close right on the frame

In my limited experience - I would remove the old bottom hinge from the window for measuring the height. Then close the hinge up measure the thickness (height) - Either 13mm or 17mm, then measure the length of the hinge. Even getting the correct lenght doesn't always ensure the holes will line up - Just drill new ones.

some times you can get away with lubing the hinges in the corners and working the window giving it a bit of a slam a few times

@@hassymiia6267 EXACTLY! You don't know why he did what he did! And neither did he! It's simple but you don't know. It's all ok until you drop the window. Brilliant - is there any particular reason why the window does this?
@sherin1969

If you are asking why the gap appears between the window and the frame then it is due to the window being forced so wide when opening that it distorts the hinges. I have the same issue in one of my upstairs window which when I left it open slightly on a windy day it was caught by a gust of wind which forced it to open almost beyond the maximum opening capacity of the hinge. This obviously bends the hinge so that you cannot close it fully. Hope this helps.

Hello Nick. Ive got a gap just like that and its making my leg and foot cold where I'm sitting. I thought a simple adjustment might work. Is that not possible? Nothing looks broken. Whats the likely cause?
@SimpleNickVideos

Hi Barnaby, I could not see anyway to adjust the hinge on mine, and there was no sign of anything broken. You would think it would be a simple hinge adjustment. In the end I bit the bullet and just changed the hinges. You can see the results in the video, and I am so pleased I did it.

SimpleNick - Nick Collins thanks Nick. I came across your vids a couple of summers ago. Then last summer I made a tandoor and it worked well, however, had a few issues in the end. I did email via your website, but didn’t get a response so was unsure if it had actually sent. I’ll try again through that link. May be a bit long and less efficient if asking through here. Cheers mate

Great video. I have a question about the hinges: The ones I’m replacing have small location lugs / teeth on the bottom (or top depending on the end) of the hinge so it almost grabs the frame... the new ones I have bought as replacements don’t have these teeth and I am worried that the screws alone aren’t really enough... But, I can’t seem to find the same hinges (Cotswold hinges). Any advice is welcome! Thanks David

Thomas Charters annoyingly, no I haven’t. And the more I think about it, I’m convinced I need these locating lugs. The windows are on the first floor flat, overlooking an underground car park... so if they fall out, it’s a long way down! Have found a solution?

@@davidmitchell7714 Found a solution - there are updated versions of the hinges I had, I had to contact the manufacturer of the window directly who was able to locate them. They said there are others that would work, but might not be as good a seal! Whether that's their sales lingo or not, I don't know, but the new hinges work.

Put some 3mm packets under the hinge. Your replacemen hinges are meant to sit flush with the top and not in the channel of the frame. The feet are basically 3mm packets lifting hinge parallel. If nothing fitted there then the hinge will twist into the groove and not work.
