once mud is feathered sanded primed you're gunna wanna roll your paint so why not suggest removing the fixture? cleaner look than cutting around it and the average diy'er will probably end up scuffing it w a sanding block or paint brush. probably end up repainting the entire ceiling anyway. being a kitchen, odds are it will discoloured enough to make new paint stand out

Hi Jeff and Happy belated Bday. Question...Do you recommend me using this winged patch method if hole is over 12”? I know I will use blocking, but unsure of winged repair method due to your statement “you use the California patch under 12”. Have you made a video of larger ceiling patch without winged method? Thank you for all your videos. They inspire me to attempt repairs I would have never thought of doing before. Alex (Miami)

Hello Jeff. I've seen a product on youtube that not on the market yet that seems to have some promise. It's called Liagle Tape in Mud which is a tapeless mud solution for fixing drywall repairs. He's a fellow Canadian and it looks like he's still working to get his product to market. I see he's already contacted a couple of other youtubers for help like See Jane Drill and Shannon from House Improvements. Perhaps you could reach out to him and get a sample and give it a review? Maybe you could help to get it available for sale. It's definitely intrigued me and I personally would like to give the product a go. Thanks.

Is there a proper way to cut drywall besides holding it against your body and cutting towards you with the blade? This is an edit based on a reply to explain I was not being condescending in the above comment; I really want to know from an inexperienced position. However, I do understand how pro can do things in a different way because of an elevated skill level which I have not obtained. All in good sentiment.
@vadjrob

Retracting my misunderstood reply to your initial comment. There’s a ton of frustration born nastiness out there during the current Covid climate. It’s easy to get irritated with that and stick your nose in to call someone out on it. I REALLY wish I’d understood your comment as a legitimate question. Thank you so much for your peaceful edit and reply! Apologies for my nose getting in the way. This wonderful content provider answers negativity quite well if at all. He doesn’t need me sticking up for him. Especially if I’m wrong from the start. To add further note to your question: If you’re using one of the handy utility knives with the break off blades, they have many positions to set how far the blade sticks out. As Jeff said, you’re only scoring the paper on one side so you can set the position to only have the very tip of the blade out. If you find yourself pressing harder than you would when shaving, change blades/snap off to a new blade section. The harder you apply the blade, the harder it is to control if you slip. *Glances at the scar from a time when he almost lost a fingertip* Cheers and thank you again.

@@vadjrob I was not being condescending; I was merely asking to know. I use this platform for suggestion not aggression. However, I get where your coming from given the concise wording of my comment and will edit based on your feedback to further prevent any such impression. Also, if you are experienced in this line of work, feel free to let me know if there is a way, because I do not know and it seemed dangerous for a novice. Thanks for the reply.

OMG Jeff, Mahalo from Oahu...Based on your "Perfect Speech" Oh Canada......hahaha. No worries we get full on Pigeon-English...So much Mahaloz...for your videos, like full on BABY-Steps, I love it...you thought of the most easiest detail tricks, techniques you season construction guys usually miss because its so so Obvious to you all; however, the minute, the littles tricks, the small and "Obvious tricks." So amazing....I appreciate you for NOT forgetting the lil ppl, where you started...but most of all, the TRICKS of the Trade to Eliminate the Trial and Errors we didn't have to endure, waisted time, and Money(Kala) because you gone before us....Mahalo Mahalo Mahalo my Uso (Brother in Samoan) from the North.... I consider myself a RU-vid DIY Guy, got some videos i did that help ppl repair their washer and dryers, that's another time:-) I am more confident to seize this patch repairing extravaganza (about 20 repairs throughout the ceiling and walls) Said that Jeff: Question...So the cabinetry/electricians just completed my "Happy Wife Happy Life Kitchen Renovation." The electrician had cut-up parts of the dry wall installing recess lighting and other connections, new dimmers and etc...IS THERE a "Trick" on ceilings to repair those cuts by JUST using the 4" knife and making mud and just applying on those slits, Or you recommend to use that mesh and then mud those cut drywall lines. BTW i love the California Patch and how you apply and explain it with kids gloves... Mahalo and I'm a proud subscriber and watched CHOKE(a lot) of your videos already. Aloha Dana

I had this done to my ceiling by some contractors. It looks pretty good, but there are minor uneven spots with the plaster. You can't really notice it at all in normal lighting settings, but when I put a flashlight alongside the ceiling, you can really see the bumps and where they plastered. Is this to be expected? I can send you a video if you'd like... Just seeking another opinion!

Thanks for the video, I never knew the drywall paper was thinner than drywall tape! In the last year I found "setting" drywall compound powder that requires mixing (why would I want to do that?!?!).... Turns out that setting compound doesn't shrink (you can fill huge gaps), is stronger and dries in 20/45/90 minutes! I now only use the "bucket" stuff for the final (sanding) coat.

What is 'Kilz'? By that I mean, I know it's a brand, but a brand of what exactly? Just oil-based primer in a spraycan? As a brand, Kilz isn't available to me so I'm just trying to find an alternative that is.
