Thank you. I had a few cracks. One was bad. I followed your instruction exactly and it looks amazing. The floor of the tub is now very solid and the paint from Krylon (Buscuit color) matched up perfectly. Also replaced all of the chromed shower parts and it looks like a brand new shower. I am shocked at how well it worked out for us. Thank you. This video saved me thousands of dollars on a shower/tub insert replacement. Thank you

I want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH SIR for this video!!! My aged parents had someone come out to give an estimate of why the tub was leaking. They were quoted $3000 plus to repair and $8000 to replace. My parents are on a fixed budget. I went to visit (I live 4hrs away) and inspect it myself. No water marks or stains around the fixtures. None where my dad said water was coming out the wall. I noticed a crack in the tub. I watched your STEP BY STEP video about five or six times to build my confidence to see if I would attempt the repair!! THANK YOU again because I did, and it came out perfect!!! Can't tell a crack was even there to begin with. It also fixed the water leak!!!! Thank God for people like you to help people like me and my parents not to be taken advantage of!! HUGE THUMBS UP!!! Would it be better to countersink those holes, then the fill would have land area giving more structural to the hole . A straight hole can more easily fail by falling straight through where a chamfered hole hole has a larger top and cannot fall through.

@@magicone9327 While that's true when it comes to fastening softwoods and aluminum, this application forces epoxy through the hole(s) and cracks as well as bonding with surrounding epoxy and the fiberglass, making a very strong bond.

$3000! ...$8000! People are insane nowadays. They just tell you anything like money is water. I asked about taking a tree down in my yard and they said $3000. It was three guys and they said it would take a day. They were from Honduras and couldn't speak English. I'm pretty sure they must be here illegally. $3000 is probably more than a years salary for 2 people there. I found a local American guy and his son to do it for $600.

Thanks for this video! After 5 plumbers, one finally discovered a crack in the tub about 3-4 inches across in the bottom corner. They told me that repairing the crack is only a temporary “band aid”. I was told a new $4,800 tub/shower needed to be put in. Well......I know how strong Bondo is and when I seen this video, I knew right away this was an excellent option. I followed your vid exactly and stayed under $100 buying all the supplies. I’m about 14 hours away from filling the tub and testing out the repair. Only trouble I had was the fact I didn’t have a flexible tool to spread the glass and putty over the curve. I did what I could and smoothed it out with the back of my finger. It wasn’t a super flat flush finish, but after liberal sanding it is smooth and almost unnoticeable after the paint. Thanks for this vid and saving me loads of money. 👍👌😎

It has turned out really really good so far. I can’t wait to see the end product when I am done. Because my crack was on the side I did not realize that gravity would pull the resin down, so it was a little thicker on the bottom of the tub so I had some sanding to do but I just put the primer on today and have the tub and tile shipping tomorrow and will be done.

RisenPhoenix, I realize this comment is 7 months after the fact, however, I hope you got the Ok from the owner/lessor before attempting that repair. It is perhaps a violation of the terms of your lease. Also as a rental owner, doing my own maintenance work, I would not want to have someone leave behind a substandard repair that I would have to address before I could even tackle the real repair.

Super excited to get it fixed! Hope this helps. Have a great day! Also, Lowe's, and Home Depot have it as well. I just looked on their website and the bondo fiberglass resin is cheaper at these two stores other than amazon.

Great video!! I recently noticed hairline cracks in my fiberglass tub that was just installed 3 years ago. Color me beyond annoyed. I have been pricing having the whole thing ripped out and a new installation done. Sooooo expensive and not in my budget right now. This video is so informative and makes me confident enough to try and do the repair myself. Is that 2 coats of putty you put on before the primer and paint or just 1?

You need to route the cracks out as well and I would recommend kitty hair fiberglass, much more moldable and easy to use as well as cuts the mesh out of the equation

Thank you! Note if this happens: Bondo Glass may be tacky for hours because the hardener wasn't mixed well or not enough. So we waited over 12 hours still a little tacky but during sanding, the lower level is pretty solid and not tacky.

Make sure you make a circle of the material and then use one bead across the diameter of that circle of the hardener.

The bondo may fail to cure if there wasn't enough hardener, if the hardener was old or stored too hot, if the resin was old or allowed to freeze, or if the surface it was spread on wasn't free of contaminants. Its absolutely essential to use something strong enough to remove all soap residues, any adhesive tape residues, the amine blush from the surface of any epoxy glues used by prior repair attempts, and the wax contained in the repair resin that rises to its surface to hold the hardener in the bulk so that it cures. I prefer to use Acetone for the final cleanup because its reliably effective. The formula for Lacquer Thinner varies regionally and over time to conform with air quality mandates. Any alcohol available will contain water. Acetone is always effective and doesn't leave any water behind, but its very hard on bare skin and it evaporates so rapidly that so-so ventilation is inadequate.

How soft is it in comparison to the areas around it? If it is not too soft then I would just do this repair and you will notice that it will be strengthened. Where is the crack located? A common area for cracking due to soft spots are in areas where people step into the tub and put all of their pressure on one foot. I am curious where your crack is.

@@DPTubs yeah my crack is on the most stepped on area, towards the back of the tub about 2-3 inches aways from the rear bend of the tub. The crack itself is about 6-8 and horizontal, it is also slightly spiderwebbing out in the center aswell. Was planning on doing the drill holes on both ends of the crack and where it’s beginning to spiderweb/branch out in the center, i was just worried that over time it might bust open again. When applying pressure from my palm to the crack there is some give and it slightly opens the crack.

I personanlly like to for added reinforcement and smoothening it out. The bondo putty doesn't sand completely smooth so that's why I add a layer of smoothening putty.

I don’t suppose you are located in north eastern Wisconsin? I need a crack in my fiberglass bathtub repaired. All the bathtub guys just want to sell me a whole new bathroom remodel. I guess they do not realize, if I could afford a bathroom remodel, I wouldn’t be living in this dumpy house. 😂 I would attempt this myself, however my hands don’t work so well after having rheumatoid arthritis for many years.

What grit sand paper did you use at each step? I think I heard 80 grit and 150 but I’m unsure of what step to use each one. I’m off to Lowe’s tomorrow to buy the supplies to fix a crack in my shower that hasn’t been used in 5 years. After watching your video I think I have the knowledge to tackle this myself.

Clayton Brimm how awesome! I use 80-150 to scuff up the surface and 150-180 to sand the patch work. You can even get into the 200’s to sand the final skim coat if you want to reduce or eliminate scratch lines.

@@jasenmorales9810 I use Zinser 1-2-3 in a can primer. Works great just make sure it dries completely before a light sanding with 400-800 grit then spray top coat.

To prevent cracks again you need to inject foam under the tub to support the bottom. Therefore drill larger holes and spray the foam under the tub for this support. Use foam that doesn't expand that much like CRC Brand low expansion. Same process for showers. floors.

This is on a tub by tub basis. This particular tub was solid underneath but on the cove / back rest of the tub it was hollow. There is too much of a void space to inject foam behind the back rest of the tub. If you watch some of my fiberglass foam repair videos you will see that foam is only applied when needed.

When you're sanding between layers, what is your goal? Is it to make it super smooth or is it to remove the biggest pieces? Or are you sanding it to rough it up for the next layer to bond with? And are you sanding it till it's flush with the rest of the tub or is just to smooth just the part we're working with?

Sand it smoother each time making sure edges are primarily smoothened with all big pieces removed. Smoother with each coat.

Cool. I need to do this to my upstairs tub. It's leaking through the ceiling of my family room. I was hoping there was just some silicon I would spray on the tub to stop the leaks. The cracks that are in the tube are hairline cracks.

Do you have to prime and paint the tub at the end? I am repairing my own personal tub and don't care what it looks like. Honestly white won't match the color anyway so if I can shave $100 off the project that would be awesome.

Do I need Bondo glass and putty or can I get by with one? I ask because I only got the high bond filler. *edit* I couldn't find the Bondo Glass except on Amazon and I can't wait a month or more for them to ship it. So I went and used 2 patches of fiberglass cloth instead and let them dry for 2 and half hours before putting on high bond putty. Will that work?
