This is just fine for older vehicles where they salt the roads at least 5 months of the year. The fiberglass he's using won't shakeout even on country washboard roads. There are other videos with techniques that you can integrate into this one. I use a clear gloss coat over the final paint for a bit more camouflage. Everyone uses slightly different tools, but it works.
my first question is there rust on the inside of that metal that needs to be taken out ..?or you are doing this for nothing ..?..because it will just come back again ..?
Use chicken wire to form body shape. Use fiberglass to lay over chicken wire. Now you have a clean hard surface to lay bondo. On this project, 2 hours until first coat of filler.
This is the kind of work i did when I was a high schooler (no offence) and I did a lot of amazing things. It was great. This however, needs to be cut away. Simple as that. You would have cleaner seams and a long lasting good result. Thanks for posting though. Good job & God Bless.
if youre gonna do it why not do it right and replace with metal? Unless you blast the whole panel inside and out the rust wont stop and you'll have a bigger mess to fix later
I suppose. When I started attempting to beautify the older cars I could afford years ago, I had no welding skills. Though I can weld now,(and afford newer cars) I just continued to do it that same way. The results, on these older, aging vehicles, is adequate for me, although not for everyone, I'm sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a '95 geo prism...from Wisconsin. When I got it 3 years ago and had to Jack it up, I realized how badly it was rusted...the car collapsed under it's own weight. I can easily crumble pieces off with my hand. I only have 194k miles on it. How much rust is too much rust? I would like to know more about patching metal with metal.
Harvie Gemmell I use a floor jack on a substantial part of the frame on this vehicle due to that issue. As these vans age, those side jack points aren't to be trusted. Thanks for the comment.
THIS GUY IS A DIY...FOR ALL THOSE SAYING THINGS ABOUT HOW HE'S DOING IT ..HES PROLLY NOT A BODY MAN LOKE MY HUSBAND SO HE AIN'T GOING TO HAVE ALL PRO TOOLS AND METHODS BUT HE GOT IT DONE
I don't know. Is it how you "fix" your cars there? If they would see you around here "fixing" a body part with fiberglass instead of using metal.. In here they work that piece of metal into the shape of the original, they cut out the rusted part and weld the new one to the car.
This is just one way to "spruce up" an old car during its golden, I mean rusting years. There are better ways as you suggested. Thanks for watching and commenting. Here is my latest rust abatement work: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KZ_EG-0FQf0.html
Welding is quite easy to learn and the equipment isn't that expensive, I never tried fiberglass before but it seems trickier and messy, I tried Arc welding which I found quite easy and made some nice welds after a few hours practice, I'm no expert but I think on car repairs they use MIG welding which is supposed to be the easiest to learn, give it a go i,m sure you could make some nice repairs its quite fun too. Nice vid btw.
I think most of the thumbs down are from people who live in States where the weather is decent. They have no idea what salted roads in winter can do to a car. They don't understand the economics of keeping an old vehicle for winter and deep snow. Many of us have old 4x4's out in the country and we can't wash them often during winter. They just don't understand the reasoning behind patching low value cars as cheaply as possible. Welding on a "disposable" vehicle is a waste of time & money. They did offer some improvements, though. Best to you.
Well put. That sums up my situation and attitude toward this kind of work on this kind of vehicle. Thanks for watching and taking the time to make such an well thought out comment.
This is a clown at work! As soon as I saw the tools you was using I could tell you didn't have a clue. ALL rust should be cut away or grinder away with a grinder to bare shiny metal so you have a clean area to weld to if replacing panel and so you don't have rust under the filler causing more rust as soon as you cover it
BS. You should have furnished the entire video. Or your whole life time is a 1/2 ass project . Take it ease I’m only messing with your mind. I loved the video. And I love to ruffle some feathers.🤯🤯🤯🤣
No offence but I wonder how ppl can care less and go buy a rust pile. Then having enough interest just to do a fake repair. A waste of time.. weld in new metal dammit
