Did you know growing a lawn by seed takes the same steps as planting a new sod lawn? Having seed on hand is always a good idea. Even with a sod installation, it’s important to understand how to overseed areas in case of damage from animals, heavy traffic or other problems.
Remember: Correct compost coverage and consistent soil moisture is important! This will help you overcome the biggest obstacle of all = GERMINATION. Too much moisture, seed washes away. Too little moisture, and the seed will dry out.
You will need to “babysit” the seed for a few days at least, and no mowing for at least 3 weeks. It will take 6 months to achieve the consistent beautiful look of freshly installed sod 1harvested by Southland, so be patient! Sod is much easier, sure, let them do all the work, but it costs a fortune. I have an end unit, with quite a bit of grass, and half my lawn was either dead, or it was just earth, with no grass at all. I was told it would cost thousands to fix / repair my lawn. Instead, I spent about 150 Canadian on earth and seeds, water everyday for 10 minutes, and now I have people literally pulling over to compliment my work. Sod is amazing no doubt is some circumstances. For me it would have been more hassle. Great video by the way. I love the humour.

You are exactly right! Addressing the cost of sod vs. seed you touched on all the obvious bullet points. When sod is delivered from Southland it has been well established for months using the highest quality fertilizer and cultural practices, which clearly incur supply and labor cost which must be recaptured to remain in business and earn a living. If a homeowner is diligent and has time and resources to make sure the ground is properly prepared, the seed is properly planted and the lawn is properly maintained they can save some money. Do It Yourself is generally less expensive in all home and garden endeavors, IF the skill and time are put into it. Sounds like you were able to do all those things!

Just purchase my first home and had new Marathon II sod install in my front yard; it looks great. Sadly some irresponsible dog owner in my neighborhood allow their dogs to relieve themselves in mine and others yard. Could you inform me where I may purchase the Genuine Marathon II seed shown in this video. Thank you for posting this informative and entertaining video. I miss seeing your gardening series on PBS.

Addressing the common opinion that sod is more expensive... of course, we have been cultivating it for nearly six months before it is delivered by truck to your curbside, and that will incur expenses which must be taken care of to remain in business. Seed planted by a homeowner needs the SAME amount of care ("babysitting" to use a common term) in order to successfully germinate. Help! My sod was placed about 6-8 weeks ago and it is essentially dead. (Tall fescue). It grew nicely for a few weeks, then laid down and turned brown. We had some tree limbs cut back to provide more sunlight. I actually think we may have over watered it in the shady areas. It was also very bumpy. It wasn’t rolled after it was laid and I suspect that some of it never actually make contact with the ground below it. My plan now to use a leveling rake and place a mixture of topsoil and potting soil down and seed it. Any thoughts or advice? I live in Virginia.

my sod didn't make it thru the summer , not sure if its dead dormant or fungus . cali drought has been brutal :(

Can I water my lawn regularly when I am growing seeds or should I stop until seed germinates?
