How to Repair a Stripped Strap Button in Less Than 2 Minutes

It is just a matter of time before the strap button on the guitar starts to loosen. When it does you have two options. First, take it to a tech and pay way too much money to have them fix it. And second, fix it yourself in under two minutes with just a screwdriver and toothpick. In this video I'll show you how to quickly repair your strip strap button on your guitar.

Thank you so much! I got my first guitar, an Epi Les Paul and I was so excited but I soon realized the top strap button was loose which really bummed me out. Then I did what you showed (but with a sliver of a pencil I’d broke) to jam the hole and get a tight screw hold. Works like a charm 👌 much appreciated

@gonebymidnight2881

You should probably not break the toothpick like that if the holes are not countersunk or you will chip the finish around the holes. Also I’ve done this multiple times and it’s a good idea to actually glue those toothpickups inside with some drops of super glue, it makes for a more stable and long-lasting fix.
@JadeDude1973

I've been told to use wood glue, or Elmer's in an emergency. Super glues can mess up your finish.

You are a life saver. I was sure I ruined my son's bass guitar. I was told by his instructor that I should install straploc bottons on his guitar/strap. Seemed easy enough until I took the existing buttons off of his bass. I knew something was wrong when I looked at how thick the screws were for the old buttons compared to the straploc screws. No way the screws where going to be able to tighten up. I used two tooth picks per hole with a little glue on each tooth pick. It was the perfect fix. Glad I found your video.

Thank you!!! You just saved me a lot of trouble. I read in the comments someone used a Q-tip so I tried it (thinking I didn’t have toothpicks at home) and it was too thick and as I pushed in it only pushed the Q tip deeper so I was screwed for a bit. Thought I was gonna have to play my gigs sitting down this weekend but I ended up finding tooth picks, so I put super glue on the tip of it, stabbed the stuck Q tip hard and left it there to dry, then pulled it out and it came right off. Then I finally proceeded to do your method with a toothpick. Moral of the story ONLY use toothpicks haha.

@JadeDude1973

This may affect your paint/finish, but the fix for super glue is nail polish remover -- Acetone. Also, this may sound weird, but freezing weakens the bond of the glue, so if you had a freezer big enough for a guitar...?

My 1-week old Epiphone Les Paul Standard had the screw of the strap stripped out because of those damn Dunlop plastic strap locks pulling pressure. I recommend using two pieces of toothpicks and some wood glue and let it dry for 24 hours or more. If there's no glue there's a chance that it'll slide off again.

I think it would be a good idea to use some side cutters to cut the toothpick cleanly and a drop or so of Superglue on the screw or in the hole. 👍☮️🌞
