Three points to suggest: 1. When the texture is BONE DRY - a light prime coat is advisable - preferably an oil based KILZ spray - because latex paint on bare new texture will liquefy the water based texture. ALSO - 2. That texture comes in water based (where a primer is advisable) OR an oil based texture - which dries much faster and you have to work quickly knocking it down and no need for priming. 3. Often, when you buy these sprays, they can have a weak spray if they are too cool. IT is great to put the can in a pot of HOT tap water to warm it up - keep it in for at least 15 minutes - lifting and shaking the can a few times during the warming process. This really is a fun art! (35 yr handyman here.) Thanks Leah!!

Leah......no joke is is the very 1st comment I have ever made on a youtube video in my life and I am doing it simply because you are such a wonderful human being! I have watched a ton of your how to videos and you are honestly one of the best teachers out there! At the very least you deserve your own HGTV how to series!! My favorite part is at the end of the videos you always have this incredibly inspiring and sincere send off leaving the viewer pumped full of this self confidence that drives them to tackle this house hold repair/task. I just purchased my first home which also happens to be a duplex that I inhabit and now I am preparing the upper level to rent out. These videos are 100% gold to me and you have unknowingly become my home repair Sensei! I am glad that this is my first ever youtube comment because it means everything for me to let you know how much impact you make on peoples lives!! I mean look at the comments people have already made!! You are truly amazing Leah! I hope the universe pays you back ten fold for all the goodness you spread!

Yes. A good tutorial. I am in process of texturing some large areas after having done some repairs to my bedroom walls. I tried a can of that spray stuff and got a huge mess, a messy splatter. Instead, I used a whisk brush, thinned the joint compound, and ran my hand across the bristles, creating a fine spray matching the old texture. I ran a spatula over the peel to knock it down a bit.

Just signed it to say, Leah (sp?), that this as well as your other "How-To" RU-vid videos are among the best in presenting excellent instructions and helpful tips on how to build and repair things. No unnecessary gimmicky stupid humor or needless rambling, but just excellent essential information with clear diction and steady camera work. Thanks. (One suggestion, however - the drywall repair "plug" you showed at the beginning, I would suggest editing the video to add a text link at that point in the video to another video explaining how to make that plug with the built-in paper "attachment borders." I've seen someone else's RU-vid video explaining how to cut your own and that tip in itself was worth a lot to me. Thanks again, Leah, for your willingness and time commitment to significantly ease our learning curves!)

*May, I point out the mistakes?* Stick the can in boiling water (off the stove) let it warm Up and vigorously shake it … spray in circular motion and consistent don’t zap it. And screw in your drywall to a piece of wood in the very beginning .Coming from someone who does this at least 3 times a week*
@samuelalley7331
@samuelalley7331 3 года назад
Heating the can is a good idea as it does warm the air and cause the spray pattern to perform better. As far as screwing in a piece of drywall to wood substructure placed behind it. First, you need the wood and the screws which is more materials and time; secondly, that is simply another way to do it necessarily better for the average diy-er. Leah is demonstrating a california patch style which is plenty sufficient for anything under 8 to 9 inches and under.

Also, that wall paint is the same color is mine in my apartment, do you know what color it is? or any tips on how to find out what the correct color is ( maybe take a sample to the store?)

Queenn Callier she peeled the paper off another piece of drywall! It is a wonderful trick!. Another, is to use setting compound to join a piece to cardboard. These are two ways to not spend more money if, like me, you have extra wallboard hanging around. As for places to purchase: I like KamCo, Home Depot, my local business and at last resort Lowes. For your wall color: before squaring off - take a small piece, half dollar size, and bring it to Sherwin Williams. BEST PAINT MATCHING EVAH!

I have adopted a way like you stated, i have 1 chisel I keep razor sharp, its heavy and .75 inch, I make my plug flanges a little larger than I need to and when I put it in the hole to get the fit right I use a sharp box cutter to carefully cut the flanges so that the box knife blade goes thru the flange and scores the wall, remove the plug and then with the chisel i carefully remove the paper , paint, and all down to the bare Gypsum, it's ok to go a little deep and make the surface rough because the new compound and paper will cover that nice and hold better by being more grippy. remove it all from the hole to the score mark all the way around, now when you put the patch in the whole thing is either exactly level with the wall or lower. If its a Really large hole , like more than 4 or 5 inches accross, sometimes i go ahead and get a 1X 1/4 inch piece of pine ( free bee where I find them) and cut it over sized and run it on the back side bolting it with recessed sheet rock screws it's makes it easier to get a firm plug and also allows for more holding compound when the plug is inserted. i use way more than she did in the edges of the hole, i like to think of it as expanded rock on the other side , when it dries out on the other side it holds it all up nice. Hell yeah though, do it like that and POOF it's not just a nice patch, it doest show at all, zero show, I shoot for that every single time, if you can tell where that hole is I have failed.

It is a personal thing, but when using those plugs I like to cut the paint and paper of the surrounding drywall just so I can recess that paper just a bit. I find it makes it smoother for me.
@TheOpelkoenjas
@TheOpelkoenjas 8 лет назад
+Joe Smyth Thinking the same. I too remove some of it just enough for the paper to fit in without making it stick out. Now on an orange peel looking wall it shouldn't matter that much (the texture is hiding it) but on a wall without any texture it's always better to take away some of it's layers. That way you won' see a bulge and you can make it much smoother.
@TheOpelkoenjas
@TheOpelkoenjas 8 лет назад
Justin Axdahl WTF?!
@56mercuryM100
@56mercuryM100 8 лет назад
+Joe Smyth Yes, I would never do it as video shows, recessing is best. Also, with orange peel, you could just use a very heavy roller sleeve, and or extra paint dabbed on.
@TheOpelkoenjas
@TheOpelkoenjas 8 лет назад
Ross MUNN Extra paint to create the orange peel look is a no go. Tried it here, and the paint - where dabbed or applied with a heavy roller - ran down the wall like droplets. Not a pretty sight. ^^ Maybe if you have special structural paint it will work, but that stuff is pretty expensive, let me tell ya.

Thank you so much for this very detailed video. I am NOT a handywoman 👩🏻‍🔧 but I try. My kids kind of destroyed some parts of their walls and we’ve had some shelves up that needed to come down. Left from all of that were stains and holes from wall anchors being removed. I am left to get the walls back to their original place and this video is soooooo much help!

Thank you for the perfect educational pace. There are quite a few videos out there that beat around the bush, but you dig right into it and give great tips along the way. Great video.

Best video I've watched on this process - and perhaps the simplest. Others seem to over-complicate the process. Well done.

As a contractor who does a variety of trades.. this was very helpful as we do painting and drywall repair work but textured drywall isn't very common in my area. Well explained and through. Thank you

I can't stay quiet. I need to tell you that im a hard person to teach. Your voice and spirit just make it so easy for me to learn. Your by far better then the men I work with. Either I can't connect to what they do or they just don't know what they are doing. Your style is amazing and fun. Great videos!!!!

Jane you inspire me, I’ve been in construction my whole life and even though I’m pretty knowledgeable with most aspects of the trade I find myself still watching your videos.

They should be paying you for properly demonstrating how to use their product. This looks so much better than what they advise in their own instruction!

Thank you for this!! I have several places to patch and repair from the previous owners, some worse than others and I am a perfectionist. None of them require an actual walls patch to be installed but getting the texture just right to look seamless is still a challenge. I have several small places I need to redo in fact. I very much appreciate your videos, step by step, easy to follow! Very nice.

This was wonderful! Thank you so much, Leah! My daughter and I are about to tackle a few sheetrock repair spots in a bedroom and were unsure how to match texture after the repair was completed. This is exactly what we needed. Love your channel!

This was awesome! At the end I had to do orange peel texture; the secret to getting that right was after spraying on the texture you hold the handle of the knife between thumb and forefinger and VERY lightly drag it over the ‘peaks’ of the texture. I also lightly sanded the edges of the wall an inch or so out from the hole before putting in the patch. That made blending the orange peel over the patch with the wall texture easier.
