A note on cleaning the rotor. My motor looked in the same condition as yours but when I cleaned up the rotor by sanding it smooth and shiny and reinstalled, it still failed to spin. Took it apart again and cleaned the grooves between the individual rotor windings and copper plates. The corrosion debris was still filling these gaps after sanding the rotor surface. Upon reassembly, the motor was quite happy to spin up..

Really enjoyed watching all three excellent videos in this series. I expect to watch them a few more times as I tackle an overhaul on my still-running, but noisy and corroded twenty-year old Warn M12000. I am optimistic I can get it apart and back together thanks to your detailed explanation and tips. THANK YOU!

Thank you for this awesome video. The best instruction with the reasoning behind it, especially not greasing the clutch sleeve. Just got a '97 TJ with on old winch on it, can't tell the make as all the labels were faded or missing. did see WINCH 8500 on the motor. Looks very similar to a HCWINCH. Think they make for various relabels . Haven't tried it yet, still 20 below F every night, not much warmer in the days. If I have a problem with it I'm sure your advice will help. really appreciate your non condescending style. Not sure where you are in the world but stay safe. Greetings from Colorado.

Excellent videos on this, could not have been any better in my opinion, such great detail on every aspect. I found these videos while researching a free Warn M4500 I picked up, which has a stuck gearbox (the free spool lever won't change like the one shown here, haven't tested the motor yet, but it looks good inside), so going to tear into it further, looks basically the same, so this helps tremendously. I've never worked on a winch, so this shows everything before I even opened it, fantastic. Thanks to all involved in making / uploading these vids!

Best detailed video I've found. My free spin is def stuck. No visible corrosion just super stuck. Big question is why the end of the bottom of the shaft of the single small gear at the bottom is jagged but no reason found. No marks inside the small bushing. Any ideas what would cause this? The teeth of all the gears are fine and everything but free spin works.

Thanks in a large part to this single 3 episode tutorial I have successfully dismantled and cleaned my 9.5 Champion winch motor which got drowned in my boathouse during a storm. Thanks very much. My only issue is that tapping alone won't budge my stuck brake mechanism and the needle nose won't compress the little arms - any suggestions ? Never mind - a socket and extension and heavy hammer and it came out. Some cleaning needed but all's well.

Hey thanks for the great series! I just serviced my old Aisin Factory Toyota winch and now that it’s back together I am leaking some ATF fluid from one, or both sides of the drum. Is it normal that the drum has a bit horizontal movement? Maybe I just need to source new orings and the movement is normal. This Aisin is also pretty different the the one you use in the video so maybe it’s rather unique.

Great detail, cheers! I just today went into one of these blind, got it all cleaned up, and you spared me some grief when it will come to reassembling. A couple of questions: 1 - If no grease or lube that might get sticky is permissible around the 'clutch gear,' what about the stuff us yanks call paraffin wax (not sure what the commonwealth term is - something like cake/candle wax)? I am about certain mine will seize again with NO lube. 2 - Within their housings, the planetary gears bear on short steel shafts, it appears, with minimal clearance (no roller or ball-bearings). After a thorough degreasing, it seems there would be a good chance of these ending up dry and perhaps even rusty. With these in mind, I wondered if this was supposed to have been run with a gear-oil, and not a grease at all, but clearly that's not right. So how do those planetary bushings ever get properly lubed? Seems like it would take a miracle to get grease down into those close-fitting things.
@omniversling
@omniversling 4 года назад
1/ yes, paraffin wax is called the same here (Oz and UK). He does address this in the vid, saying spray some WD40/CRC/RP7 into the freespool lever hole (lever out). He mentions once a month. 2/ Sounds like a good idea. I use paraffin wax to lube drawer sliders. It's never sticky, doesn't pick up dirt. But see 1/ above for his solution.
@davids1681
@davids1681 4 года назад
@@omniversling Thanks, I think I'm going to give the paraffin a go when I put the thing together. I'm pretty terrible at recurring maintenance, so though I did hear the mention of the light lube use, I can't imagine I'd ever actually do that until I discovered I desperately needed to free-spool...and couldn't.
@omniversling
@omniversling 4 года назад
@@davids1681 Wouldn't be a good outcome if the paraffin melted during use, then solidified enough to stop it moving freely. The WD40 is always liquid. After you've tried it, dont forget to come back in a couple of years and let us know! 😂
@davids1681
@davids1681 4 года назад
@@omniversling Roger that! BTW I recall decades ago as a teen trying to get my first car together, being completely bewildered by a UK-origin auto restoration manual that advised me to 'soak the disassembled carburettor parts in paraffin.' I think I had to find an unabridged dictionary to determine that they didn't mean for me to melt wax on the stove in order to soak my parts in it...

I'm curious what this job would have cost in your shop? Winches aren't cheap but neither is skilled labor. I wonder how many people replace winches because they've seized from lack of maintenance.
