Here I walk you through how to change belts and change a pinch roller on a Sony TC-K511S Tape deck, the process is very similar for most sony decks of this age.
Applies to similar models such as TC-K600s, TC-K411, TC-K515s, TC-K611s and so on.

The video is well-made, but unfortunately, it doesn't address a common real issue with this Sony mechanism. The main problem with this mechanism is the small 17-tooth gear attached to the assist motor, which has a tendency to become loose on the spindle due to cracks. I've encountered this issue at least seven times and had to replace the gear each time. Another noteworthy point is that the video makes an ambitious move by reassembling everything without thoroughly verifying if the problem has been fixed. While I believe the author may have done this behind the scenes, it's important to mention, especially for newcomers like me. Thank you for the informative video and the verbal comments. I'm excited to see more from you in the future. I've also liked and subscribed to your channel!

Those assist gears crack on machines that have been stored in heat that have not been used in a long time, replacements are available. As for "not checking first" you don`t need to "check" if you align the assist more arm as per the video its in the correct position.

@@SortitoutmanWhat’s the best place to pick up an assist gear? Been looking on ebay but all I’m finding are sellers in international countries like Germany or Slovakia. I’m in the US and don’t feel like waiting for over a month for delivery with shipping costing 3x the price of the part. And if I do go that route, are these gears reliable?

I am going to tackle my Technics RS-DV280 twin tape deck.Hopefully the record deck will work as it did when i bought the hi-fi 20 years ago.Pinch roller's and drive belts. Many thanks for your helpful video.

Technics decks of this age are a nightmare to work on and suffer from brittle drive cogs. The pinch rollers just disintegrate and changing them may fix your issue

Great video, very helpful. Just one thing: you do not need to remove the pinch holder. The pinch roller can easily be removed with a screw driver by inserting the screw driver from the pinch roller (right hand side) and press to the bottom. This works like a lever. Then you just have to press the new pinch roller with its pin carefully into the little slots with your finger. The pin must snap securely into the slots. If the belts are ok and only the pinch roller has to be replaced you can do it without opening the tape deck.

If you don`t remove the pinch roller and remove it, and do as you say, then you risk breaking the plastic mount for the pinch roller holder. Its just press fit plastic into a metal plate, and I`ve seen many of these snap by pinch rollers being removed by just prising them out with a screwdriver wedged in behind the roller into the holder whilst still fitted in a deck. You WILL have one break on you doing it that way its just a matter of time for sake of saving a few minutes from removing the mech from the front panel. And you should always change the belts at the same time, even if they look ok.....

@@Sortitoutman All right then. But I have a better idea: I'll remove the holder and give it to my friend who owns a 3D printer. I have 3 holders made so I have replacements if something breaks. Because the fine slots in which the pin is clipped wear out over time. 😎

Thank you for this very helpful video. I got a Sony TC-KE300 for 5 bucks. New belts and a good clean of the capstan and it is O.K. to go. Perhaps I have to replace the pinch roller, but that’s it. These plastic bombers are so underrated! This machine is so easy to maintain, it‘s a joy. It‘s a Sony.

They are good decks for the age compared to similar age technics models that just disintegrate with age.

Mine is the 561 I have done belts an pinch roller but previous owner for some unknown reason took screws for the cassette heads out and head height and alignment are the main problems now I have fixed all other faults, head height is the main one I am having problems with .I also found lots of dry joints on mine the transistors at the back and audio ins and outs and sound suppression caps needed to be replaced as one was leaking.

I have a tc-k411, bought in 90s as a new device. I replaced the belts and it works but there is another problem that remains from the start. The mechanism damages the tape from time to time. The damage looks like a fold, parallel to the tape edge. I made a workaround: a simple circiut that makes the motor to apply less force to the tape while playing and maintain the full force while rewinding forward, but this is only workaround. What can cause such a behavior? Something bent, or bad mounted? Erasing head too high?
@Sortitoutman

sounds more like an head guide alignment issue or bad pinch roller or both.

Just watched this video after doing a search for belt replacement and got a lot of good tips on making the job easier. I have a Sony TC-K561S (US model TC-KA1ES) which looks similar to this deck, and a Technics RS-TR575 which both need the belts changed. Do you know if the Sony is the same as this one as far as repairs? They also have said that the Technics needs to have the motor connectors unsoldered from the top PCB to get to the belts. Have you ever done the job on that particular deck as well? I fear there’s no other way to access those belts unless you can use a belt hook pull/push tool. Thanks and keep the great videos coming. They’re so helpful for the do-it-yourselfer like me trying to avoid tossing old decks when you can replace simple parts.

Thats a similar deck for the Sony. Technics decks of that age I avoid if I can as the gears are so brittle, they often break apart once you disassemble the mechs.....

rewind and forward wind each tape before playback could be the tape was just the issue. unless all your tapes are doing it

if the heads are not moving up that would happen, check the mode belt and that you have it in the right position on the mode motor
