For anyone wondering, there's a triangle grout remover tool that is much easier and has 3 different sizes on each side, when I used the saw the blade quickly dulled. The triangle tool costs 2 dollars more than the saw. I bought both, tried the triangle tool and much more efficient, cleaner edges

So glad I found your video. Easily explained. I’ve done a lot of home improvement jobs on my own but never grout. I have same problem as you did but in more spots. I found a bag of grout the previous owners left. They put the same exact tile on the floor so I’m assuming they used same grout for both bathtub tile and floor tile. Now all I need is to find out the right consistency to make it Making sure it’s not going to flake like you said if it’s too watery. Thanks. This helped a lot.

Ugh, I've got an oooold tiled bath/shower area with lots of loose/missing grout. Been kicking around replacing the tile completely, but I like what's there and the tile itself is in good shape, so I'm going to see just how hard it is to regrout a large area. Might take it in sections if the elbow grease runs out. Wish me luck!

@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 года назад
Hi Larry - smooth grout is in my experience a function of how wet your sponge is while going over it for the last few passes. I keep mine damp, but not dripping. If yours was a lot more dry, it could leave a rougher finish. Good luck!

How long after using shower should you wait before tackling a re-grout project......24hrs.. 48hrs??
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY Месяц назад
When removing old grout, you can do that anytime... but it's certainly messier if you are doing it in a wet shower, and things do need to be dry when installing new grout. I'd suggest when you are getting ready to do this project that you take a shower, then wipe down the walls and dry everything manually as well as you could... then wait at least overnight. The shower and grout will be plenty dry by then. Good luck!

Question: the tile that's been in the house for the last 50 the grout doesn't crack or chip off ever.. HOWEVER someone install some tile in my house last year and it's cracking already. The floor got wet and it really cracking down. Why is 50 years old grout not cracking at all and 1 year old grout cracking fast?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY Год назад
Most likely due to a poor install - if the substrate (backing material) that the tile is stuck to flexes *at all* the grout will crack pretty quickly and easily. This can happen due to changes in seasons, weather, walking around on it with an incorrect substrate, etc.... or, they could have simply not followed the instructions with the grout (mixed it incorrectly, didn't seal it if required, waited too long between mixing and actually installing it, etc etc) - there are myriad reasons why it's not holding up. Sorry to hear you are dealing with this, and I hope you can get it resolved. Good luck!
@auggie621
@auggie621 Год назад
Is it necessary to also caulk the joints?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY Год назад
Hi Carley - generally grout is used between tiles, and caulk at the inner corners where a wall meets the floor, or a wall meets another wall, etc. This allows for the natural expansion that occurs at these joints to happen without cracking any grout. Good luck!

Hi Vicki - this varies by manufacturer. For Fusion Pro grout that I used in this video, the instructions say: "Allow 24 hrs until light traffic, and 7 days at 70° F (21° C) and 50% relative humidity before intermittent water exposure (such as a shower enclosure). Lower temperatures and higher humidity will slow the cure times. Covering Fusion Pro immediately after grouting will extend the cure time." Thanks for watching!

I'm getting ready to attempt and thanks so much for this clear demonstration. To piggy back on this question about drying time and when it's ok to use the shower - if it's in the 80's outside /70's at night, currently about 50% humidity but high chance for rain tomorrow - should I leave window open to help it dry? Also I have a 9" fan always going in the bathroom. Is that helpful for drying? Does it expedite the drying process at all? Thanks again for the video!

Can I just use "cement" haze remover instead? Would this be an issue? My grout has been cured for good 48hrs now so wanted to tackle this haze asap. Thanks
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 3 года назад
Hi Nikhil - Fusion Pro specifically recommends either Aqua Mix Grout Haze Clean Up (amzn.to/3jJMKQC) or Tile Lab Grout and Tile Cleaner (amzn.to/3ylJJdl). If you can't find those, then get any tile or grout cleaner that is non-acidic. Good luck!
@nikbadshah
@nikbadshah 3 года назад
Thanks, a local home Depot does carry a Tilelab Cleaner. I'll try that. Didn't know it can be used for haze removal, thought it was more of general cleaner for mildew/rust type of cleaning. Does this work because FusionPro isn't your typical 'cement or epoxy' based grout?

nice video and format. But, what if you do NOT know the brand of grout that was used in your shower?? How do you match color of grout?? Merci
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 года назад
Yeah, that can be difficult. If your grout is coming off in fairly large chunks, you can bring one of those chunks to a local hardware store where they have lots and lots of grout sample colors that you could match it with. Or, you could get some paint chips from the paint department of a Lowe’s or Home Depot, and use those to try and match what the color of the grout is. Then when you’ve narrowed it down to the correct color, you can go back to Lowe’s or Home Depot and match grout. Good luck!

How long until you can use the shower again?

That varies by grout type. Check the instructions for whatever grout you use - but usually you'll need to wait at least overnight. Good luck!

Do I have to remove old grout or can I go over the top of it with new grout

Hi Thomas - you really should remove the old grout so that the new grout is installed with it's full thickness. If you just put a thin layer of new grout over the old stuff, it won't hold up very long. Great question!

Thank you! My house is 2 years old and I found some sections of grout that are just plain missing and some that were cracking. Your video gave me the confidence to do it myself!

This happens when your house is subject to a lot movement (vibrations) called settlement. Probably your tiles have been laid directly on wood which is not a good substrate to tile onto. Happened the same in place which wasn't built as well more than 2 years ago.

Can I use that little grout removal tool to remove grout on my kitchen floor ? Probably tough since it's a larger area plus the grout lines are thicker. thx
