So glad you all are liking this!!! But just to be clear cetaphil was just an example. The point is to use a gentle non soap cleanser. Many many derm’s recommend cetaphil and Cereva. It is up you what you buy. I use greland naturals for cleanser and a few others.

Fantastic video, I have started to be alot gentler with my skincare. I am acne prone so I have always used bha's but I only use bha 2-3 times a week. I have been using Krave beauty products and the mugwort products from I'm From and my skin loves them. Have you tried these products?

I damaged my barrier function in August 2018 by leaving my glycolic mask on WAY too long. My skin became so sensative that it actually hurt when the air conditioner kicked on. I did everything you recommended in this video. It was hard to give up all the serums and treatments that had been so effective for me. Glycerin became my best friend. It took over 3 months to recover, but recover it did. I can once again use all my loved products. I am just cautious now, not to over-do a good thing.

Cetaphil contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is an ingredient I avoid in hand soaps because it strips the barrier. For me personally, SLS causes a red irritation and scaly skin on my hands. I also avoid it in shampoos because it causes itchy scalp. I'm confused as to why so many dermatologists recommend Cetaphil, which contains this known irritant, as a face cleanser.

Jasmine in my mind I agree with you. Very irritating to my skin too. I couldn’t believe a dermatologist recommended it to me. Awful for my skin.

I totally agree. Every time I use any Cetaphil product, my sensitivities start. Then another dermatologist recommended white Dove soap. Been using for a decade, even used it for my babies when they were born instead of Johnson's Baby products.

SO SO on point!! 💛 This exact thing happened to me, and your overall suggestion to “pull back” is exactly what I’m doing to help ‘reverse’ my mistakes. We get so bombarded with products, especially more mature women, that it’s super easy to get sucked in - to get overwhelmed thinking we “need” to add this, try that - I had several monthly beauty box subscriptions, on top of the things I purchased left & right, and my bathroom vanity was literally overflowing. Products I THOUGHT would help my various skin concerns, products I thought I needed. What I ultimately accomplished? My face really paid the price for overusing most ALL of it. I started getting acne out of nowhere, my skin was sensitive for the first time ever, I had very dry patches, peeling, even my lips were suffering! I literally did just what you suggest - pumped the brakes on practically EVERYthing. The tretinoin was the first to go. I started using a gentle CeraVe cleanser ONCE a day, at night - and CeraVe cream for moisturizer. That’s IT. It took a good 3 weeks, at least, for my skin to calm down. And it’s taken another 3 just to get back to a state of “normalcy”. Of all your years of outstanding videos, Elle - THIS one’s on the list of a definite keeper! Thank You😉

I have been using SebaMed (purchased through Costco) for a year or so. It is an amazing, non soap, face and body cleaner that is known for maintaining a 5.5 PH on the skin. My face and body skin love it. I do use a 7% BHA toner, by The Ordinary, on my face in the morning after cleansing. I will take your advice and back off that to twice a week. I use Josie Maron's Milk. I get a vit C and peptide facial once a month. I am 70 and my facial skin looks good! I don't have to wear foundation anymore, just a tinted moisturizer over my sunscreen. Due to an illness that caused an allergic reaction, the skin on my legs (knee down) became horribly dry, parched, peeling and flaking. I could literally pull off sheets of thin skin! Nothing seemed to help. Then I tried Amlectin lotion. Oh my gosh!! Totally cured the problem! I could have cried I was so happy. My skin is now so smooth, soft and moisturized. It does have AHA in it, so maybe that exfoliation helped me, but, I am obsessed with it. A little goes a long way.

I can’t believe the timing of this video!! I woke up this morning with a horrible rash on my face! I now know it’s “contact dermatitis”. I wasn’t sure what had caused this, until watching your video... I’ve always been fascinated with skincare, and in particular, I love exfoliants! I just love the glow they can give the skin at times. In recent months I must admit I’ve over done it with everything! Exfoliating, retinol, harsh cleansers, I even bought an exfoliating head for my Clarisonic!! I felt so silly almost, when I awoke to a horrible rash this morning! Here I am almost obsessive with my skin care, and I’m doing more harm than good. I’m sure my skin will clear, but in the meantime, I’m putting away all my harsh products and I’m going to get back to basics with a simpler, more gentle routine! Thank you so much for this super helpful video! ❤️

Hi Elle! This is a terrific video. I always take notes on Skincare Sunday and saw the writing on the wall about 2 months ago. I stopped using AHA and switched my skincare to clean products (love the derma-E Hyaluronic acid and green tea night cream!), stopped pretty much everything - used double cleanse, moisturizer, gentle essence (mega mushroom too) and just moisturize, sunblock. Bare Minerals make-up. BOOM! My skin looks marvelous (I even stooped removing the vellus hair)). I bought Exuviance pads and am using them 1x/week. You teach and I learn. My skin and I thank you.

This was one of those tutorials that EVERYONE who has SKIN NEEDS. I'm 58...eek, and in no way is my skin the same as it was when I was in my teens, 30's, 40's, or now. I had the oiliest, acne infested face ever and no way was I going to add the "dreded" Moisturizer to it. Then after graduating from cosmetology back in 1980, yes, I rode a dinosaur to school 🤗 I learned so much about the skin and the layers, what they do, ect. But I still wasn't going to put all that "stuff" on my face 🤦. My skin cleared up, BUT, I was left with sun damage. I loved, and still do, to be outdoors, waterski, jet ski, boating, laying out in the sun. You know the shadow you get on your neck, and the sides have hyperpigmentation. I had it and had it bad. Long story short, I don't leave my home without sunscreen, I don't go to bed with makeup on, that's just gross. I scuba dive and do all of the things I did before, but now after taking PROPER care of my skin, it looks better than when I was in my teens. It still looks older, can't do anything about that, but overall I have to say my skin looks very healthy. I have a 16 year old granddaughter, who is absolutely amazing, beautiful, everything. She says, "nanna, I'm not putting that stuff on my skin"! I sat down and explained a lot of the things that you talked about and for the most part she did listen and her skin is getting much better. I'm sure many young kids have friends who don't have a blemish and they have peaches and cream skin, like my 13 year old amazing and beautiful granddaughter. It doesn't mean that she shouldn't follow the same rule. I do the Japanese skin care, no I don't follow every step, but then I'm not ever going to look like a gaesha women, dang. However, I do 90% of what they suggest and I can do it in 6-8 minutes. At first it took me forever, then it became a habit. EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH AND REALLY LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO. I PROMISE you will NOT Regret it. 💖💖💖💖💖

Elle so grateful you’re teaching us about over doing it with the skin care. I’m pretty sure I had done this earlier in the year and my skin is just now getting back to normal. I’m going to watch again so I don’t overuse my products! Oh I have question yea so I thought one of the goals for Retin A was the peeling/flaking so maybe you can teach us what is the right way to use it. I’ve personally just use it now 2 times a week and that keeps the flacks away. Anyway always love your videos and learn so much!!!💕💕💕. And Elle you are so beautiful I just can’t say that enough! Great, solid advice. Firstly I've been using Corsrx Galactomyces alcohol free toner, I'm finding this to be wonderful. Secondly, Green Keratin GK11 Seriously Ageless Serum, total winner and contains no nasties whatsoever just a an impressive list of beautiful ingredients. Lastly, I'm using Barrier Support Serum by Apothakat. As well as having niacinamide and hyalauronic acid it has the magical Ceramides. I've knocked off all exfoliators and my tretanoin .... all this because of an earlier vid of yours! Thank you Elle for caring about our skins, :) ❤💕❤💕❤💕❤💕❤

Update 9/26/21- So I have only used my muslin cloth twice this month and I can tell that my skin is getting better. I was using bha every day and I was using benzyl peroxide all over my face under my moisturizer. Needless to say I wrecked my skin. It’s been allot of tears, allot of stress and allot of money. Thank goodness I started watching your videos. I’ve been keeping it simple. No more foaming cleansers, toner for sensitive skin, oils to hydrate and a great moisturizer. I am also drinking water like crazy. 8/26/21- I’m going to commit to stopping the exfoliation completely for at least a month. Even though I was using just a muslin cloth, I think this was too much. Thank you for the advice

Having used junk products (high end and moderate), my skin finally rebelled due to the terrible chemicals added to these products. I now use a brand from Anne Marie. It's clean and all plant based. Thanks for doing this important series on skin care. I was taught that taking precautions when in the sun by using a clean sun care product coupled with vigilant, daily skin care (cleaning, mild exfoliation and moisturizing) are important steps for maintaining long-term, healthy skin. Staying hydrated, getting a good night's sleep (groan!), daily exercise and good nutrition all help to keep skin glowing. I so appreciate that you promote /suggest using cleaner products. When I was younger I only cared about the 'look' not so much about all the things I mentioned above. I'm now trying to take better care of myself. Thank you:-))))))

Elle, I have learned so much about skin care for my dry/rosacea skin from watching your videos. What serums and creams do you recommend for the eyes?
@trangmor85
@trangmor85 5 лет назад
I’m 34 and exfoliate daily, either with retin-a or a physical fine scrub. My skin was extra dry and flakey, but once I changed my cleanser, I noticed it was slowly regaining its balance months later by using a ceramide infused cleanser such as the la roche posay hydrating cleanser or even the aveeno gentle cleanser for baby’s with eczema. I am still able to exfoliate the dead skin daily and keep that routine without drying out my skin now.

Great video! I have cut way back on AHA and retinol products. Since we will be transitioning to the colder weather, additional hydration and moisturization will be key for my 62 year young dry skin. That said, no matter what I do I always seem to have blackheads on my nose. Any suggestions for that issue? tia 💕

Can you recommend some less expensive ceramide moisturizers? Are first aid beauty ones ok or Cerave?

I use Cerave PM. Besides ceramides it also contains niacinamide which is also a great ingredient.

I'm 39 and destroyed my skin with AHA and Glycolic Acid. I used them for about a year, max. twice a week but I got acne, though, which i never had before in my life. Many red pimples without whiteheads. Only little red pumps, which stayed for month. My nose was red all the time, like rosacea. On my nose skinoren (Azelaicacid) worked fine. But for the rest of my face it tooks me almost 2 years, to heal my skin. No antibiotics worked on me. I skiped all my acids, only jojoba mixed with a gentle moisturizer in the evening. And pure destil. rosewater every morning and evening under my moisturizer.

Around my nose is red and inflamed by the retin a. I'm not sure its worth it. I use a gentle cleanser & moisturizer. I'm getting the Cetaphil redness relief moisturizer & I hope it works. Thanks for the great video--your skin is beautiful!!

Hi Elle! Thanks for the great tips. I am having issues with my skin and think it must be a damaged skin barrier. I'm 68 and am having skin irritation. I find however if I don't exfoliate my skin feels rough. How can I deal with this roughness without exfoliating?

Jamie Hawkins you can do a very gentle lactic acid serum at night but you really want to wait until it is healed

Elle Leary Artistry thank you so much for your response. So far I have just been sticking it out. I am getting fewer clogs. I also switched to washing with distilled water. It has also helped due to its lower pH. Making so much progress in only a couple of weeks. Thank you for these videos!!

Hi Elle, what a great video, your skin is gorgeous. I’m 66 and have been on RetinA for 3 years, I was using it every other nite and about 6 months ago I switched to 2 nites on one night off. I’ve always had the dry flaking chin area since being on RetinA and the only time I don’t is when I don’t put it on my chin. Do you know why this is? I was using a soft wash cloth to remove my cleansers, I use the Drunk Elephant balm as my first cleanse then use a gentle honey wash from Sanitas Skincare at night. I might use an AHA toner once a week. After cleansing I use the Thayer’s Witch Hazel alcohol free toner then go in with my essence, Let it dry put a oil on then put my RetinA on, wait about 30 minutes and put on Timeless Syntha 6 then Sarnitas moisturizer, Bobbi Brown night eye cream. Mornings I wash my face, Essence, Glowmaker Vit.C, Timeless CQ10, Bobbi Brown eye serum, face oil, moisturizer, sunscreen. Wait 15 minutes before applying foundation and then the rest of my makeup, after about 2 hrs my chin is looking awful, flaking skin, I wipe off my chin makeup off and reapply again then it might look ok the rest of the day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Too much and sometimes not enough of anything will not be good for your skin. I would seek out the advice of medical professional that are trained on biology of the skin. Most of the products you get at Sephora are absolute garbage. Use products that are backed by research and science, data and clinical trials. Use products that strengthen your actual skin. The likelihood of reactions from products when you do that is highly unlikely. I, for example can exfoliate twice a day with an aha/bha cleanser and follow it up with pads that contain glycolic and salicylic and then follow that up with prescription Retin-A. I am more than happy with my skin and people comment on the quality of it every. Single. Day. I recommend ZO skin health. Alastin. Skinmedica and some Alumier. Forget about Sephora. It’s not the place you wanna go to for skincare.

What is a good gentle lactic acid peel when repairing your skin barrier. I am using the cerave wash, moisturizer and spf lotion in the morning. Which all claim to repair the skin barrier.

I have oily skin and have large pores . I get cystic breakouts on my chin that will leave discoloration after it heals. My skin has been sensitive since I was about 12 years old. I feel like my skin barrier needs to heal but if I don’t use salicylic acid either in a toner or wash everyday I will break out. Also I’m in my later 30’s and I’m trying to use some anti-aging ingredients. I don’t have fine lines or wrinkles. I have elasticity issues. I feel my skin type is hard to manage. What would you recommend as a basic routine to help my skin barrier without breaking out? I do moisturize with Cerave PM lotion. You look beautiful. Your face glows!

well I would work internal as well with pro and probiotics and a digestive enzyme talk to your doc. up your water intake and might add fresh celery juice in the AM as well. for topical it sounds like you need repair but also need acne support. if possible look at the ingredients on your toner. make sure no fragrance or drying alcohols at the top of the ingredients. I would work on hydration and maybe consider adding in osmosis catalyst AC 11
