This is good for very light scratches and you have to be VERY careful. As some have already commented, you can damage the plastic very quickly and some older plastics discolor and get damaged easily. Go over the area with a sweeping motion, as if you were painting. Start 4-5 inches away from the surface and gradually move it closer until you see the scratches start to disappear. Also, use a microfiber buffing pad with a couple shots of Armor All and very lightly wipe the surface after a few passes.

So smart. On that exterior plastic you showed, the heat is basically removing the oxidation. Neat.

great stuff, only thing i will say for anyone thinking of doing this is that you must clean the plastic first properly otherwise any fine specks of dust or contaminates that are on the plastic will actually be melted in to the plastic when doing this!!

A heat gun will damage to plastic. It will look good for about a month, but then the plastic color will fade and look cloudy. 😀

The key is to keep an appropriate distance, don't keep it in one spot or it bubbles, and apply plastic restore after it cools to add additional shine

A heat gun will only damage your interior plastic by melting the surface to look glossy. You are not restoring the plastic. You are destroying it.

You're correct dude, the oil will be drawn to the surface and when it dries out the plastic will dry out even more.. use an oil based restorer, a trim restorer or a liquid shoe shine , that's right, a liquid shoe shine..

What temp would you recommend?
@Can8ian.
@Can8ian. 5 месяцев назад
Vinyl melts at 212F or around 100C. I'd set the temp around 160F or around 80C. That way you are softening the vinyl but not liquifying it. Remember though that the heat will accumulate on the surface you are heating, so just because you use a temp lower than the melting point, that doesn't mean you are safe and won't damage the panel. Just use an over abundance of caution and you'll find the right combo of temp and distance to hold the heat gun from the repair area. If you want real amazing results, you can buy leather pattern stamps or sponges that have the fake leather pattern imprinted on them. To use them, heat the repair area, and press the stamp/sponge against the surface for a second or two and bam, professional looking repair.

Greta video. Does leave a shiny finish or does it go back to normal?
@Powerlinx.
@Powerlinx. 6 лет назад
Depends on how deep are the scratches from my experience if its deep enough the heat gun can make the area a bit more glossy then the surrounding spot. But a normal surface with a normal not deep scratch it will just melt the scratch back to normal without leaving any signs of damage.
