RichsMethods how do you prevent this from happening. since i watched this video ive broken 3 headphones because of this. and since i am an audiophile, i dont want to do this every time my 300 dollar headphones get bent. so how do you prevent it, are there protectors or anything because its getting really anoying
Kevin Tang Pretty much just baby your headphones as much as possible. I keep mine in a case when I'm not using them. I NEVER wrap them tightly. Usually I just fold the wire gently and place in a small zippered case. Try to prevent pulling on the cord, and always grasp them at the plug.
Kevin Tang Some things you might want to try 1 Wrap some insulating tape to stiffen the wire-pin junction to prevent bending 2 Avoid bending at this point 4 when soldering, a spot of flux at the contact point helps, otherwise tinning before is ideal. 5 bending the earth terminal away helps in soldering the 2 signal wires; 6 If you get down to soldering you could add a heat shrink sleeve at the wire jack junction
It worked! To the people saying just buy a new pair: This was my first time ever taking apart a pair of headphones or using a soldering iron and it took about 45 minutes going very slowly. Most people already have pliers and I didn't have wire strippers so I used wire cutters. In total I only had to buy a soldering iron and some solder which were $25 total. Paying $25 and spending 45 minutes fixing them is a lot better than spending $150 on a new pair. Plus now I have everything I need so the next time I need to fix a pair I am good to go.
try this model. philips she3590. it has been working for me for close to a year up until i lost it 2 days ago. without hesitation, i bought another one in a different color. it's cheap (around 10 bucks) and it sounds good, and it lasts for a very long time. hope i helped. :)
i feel your pain bro :( the time i bought an original headset it last 5 months than a year so when i bought a 2nd original headset(i have a fake head set so when it broke i tried to fix the wires from the plug to the earphones but i works too!)i taped the plug with some electrical tape ( i made it look not obvious because it's emberassing) and glued it (super glue.... why not?!?) and it lasted 2 years because i lost it but it's worth the time though..
this is by far the most common headphone malfunction. Im surprised they havent invented some sort of solution for this to never happen.. they should use reinforced wires or some kind of super protection at the end of the wire/jack on all headphone / earbud devices.
Vojtěch Konderla true but some 3rd company should have come out with a product to make the area where the jack meets the wire stronger. What i will be doing in the future is wrapping that entire area with black electrical tape until its nice and strong and protected because im SO sick of this happening , ive gone through a dozen or so because of this problem since the early 90s
fire is faster to remove the coating btw also, you can do a continuity test with a multimeter, the tip of the headphones left, next is right, and the last part is ground. if it's a combo jack it's left right ground and mic, if your multimeter doesn't have a continuity test, you can test resistance and it's the same thing as continuity test, if you get a resistance = a circuit loop is closed. That's how you test what part is which.
+1XbatistaX1 Rocknexus is correct. However, the reason the sound is lower in the one ear is because you have short in your wire. If you feel up to it, I'd replace your plug.
Thanks very much for your video, it was informative and really easy to understand. Now I can go ahead and fix my two favorite sets of head phones, the tip about using the hot glue gun to secure the wires into the casing was great. Thanks again, Fredrick
+Nickolie-psn Newell I got these awesome philips earphones SHQ3200 they last a long time and the wire is underlayed with kevlar but I just killed mine with water otherwise the best ones I've got so far
I have now fixed plug shorts in a cable of my computer speakers! Your guide worked equally well. Now I am enjoying sound without buying new speakers :)
Dude a plug is like 99c or less I have a wire stripper but normal strippers work better and soldering gun costs like 15 for a whole kit including shoulder sucker, stand, 2 strimmers, 2 spear wires, shoulder gun cleaner, sharp teasers, screw driver, 6 different screw bits
Dude, you soldering game really sucks. You don't "just dab it on." Best method: After the soldering iron is hot, hold the tip of the iron to the connection point for a few seconds, then carefully touch the solder wire right where the iron and your wire meets the connector. You WILL get a nice little bead of solder the first time, everytime, and you won't have mess of droplets on your work surface, and you'll have much less solder on the tip of your iron.
Great video. The replacement plug end can be used over and over. I just fixed an expensive headphone with a plug I bought online from china and it works perfectly. Sure the initial investment of purchasing a soldering kit is a pain but it will work for repairing kids toys and many other items. Make sure you have some flux paste to get the solder to flow onto the parts. Also make sure the soldered wire doesnt touch the screw on cover or it will short and you will only get sound from one earphone. Electrical tape wrapped around outside will separate from cover. Thanks Rich
+PoisonousAvacado Hehe, i don't have these but if you got these i think you would try to repair them : www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/sennheiser-sennheiser-game-zero-gaming-headset-with-microphone-gamezerow-white-gamezerow/10391579.aspx?path=1a6cd72aad6e6232c8fda9d03ea0adb1en02&lang=fr-ca&pcname=&sku=10391579
The plug finally went out on my pair of AKGs recently after eleven years of use. I'd gotten so used to them in all that time that even though I bought a new pair of the same, they just didn't sound right for mixing. I'm glad to find out I can just fix my old pair then.
I have Hyper X | Cloud II's and for the past week or so my right headphone has been louder then my left headphone... If anybody knows how to fix it please reply.
Hmmm- I need to get a pair to see how they work. If there is a distortion in the sound with bluetooth headphones, then there might be something wrong with the plug that goes into the device. What type of plug is it? In other words, is it on an iPhone (lightning plug), USB, or headphone plug?
so your saying it's wireless? that happened to me too, when its connected to my laptop its clear and loud but if I use my Nokia C1 its literally too much distortion. For my case, its the Bluetooth that causes that because my C1 has only a version of 1.0 but laptop has a bluetooth 4.0. the bluetooth connection also affects when your too far from your device...
Thank you! i had it all covered EXCEPT for the step where you removed the color coating of the wires. That i didn't know and was the problem with my attempts to reapir my old headphones
I f***** it up and wired it the wrong way round. Now the sound that should be going through my left ear is going through my right ear and vice-versa. 😭
Whats wrong with that? "Now the sound that should be going through my left ear is going through my right ear and vice-versa" PLS. I REALLY WANT TO KNOW... ASAP...
Thank you! This helped so much and now my headphones are working again. Your tutorial was awesomely easy to follow and steps were very clear. Only con is that sometimes the camera is a little out of focus, but everything else is amazing! Thanks. :)
dEigo Of course you can do this.... why wouldn't you. People will always be making more excuses to not learn something new. Irrational logic is at work with some people. I'm an American by nationality, and I find these videos extremely helpful and incredibly informative. Agree with you, but their is still hope....
Great video. I thought I knew how to rewire headphones and could never get them to work (I didn't know those little green and red wires had enamel on them). Loved the guy's suggestion to burn off the enamel. Thanks, Rich. You rule!
*Ascends from the top of the comment section wearing white robe* Everyone. Stop your commenting. I Have come. Im the common sense dude who no one agrees with. Listen, Spend 100 to 150 dollars on a pair of headphones. Its the last headphones u will ever need in your life. you will eventually break so many headphones that u will be paying 150 dollars! Do it! *Descends into hated and unseen comments*
I went through the pairs of bose ear buds in 9 months, I was pissed when bose wouldn't replace or repair. finally I still have them, now I can fix them, good thing i saved the last pair.
Good job on the video. Just to let you know that the area that you put the hot glue on is an area that you can crimp those ends together to keep the wire in place. Great job on the vid!
+1 on using hot glue for holding it all together (I'm a bit more generous on it though). I also try to get replacement plugs with sleeves that fit nice and tidy on the cable, and in the case where the cable is either smaller or too big to use the sleeve I put on one or more layers of cable shrink wrap (staged when more than one) which gives a more professional finish and prevent the cable from over-bending at the plug.
Great Video My Brother use to fix my ear phones all the time but unfortunate he passed away. Instead of a housing he would make a mold out of some kind of hard putty for the jack.
Thank you very much, my headphones dont wear out, the wires just break, I think that this wire weakness is built in, so that you have to buy new ones, but cant claim on the guarantee. any way I now have a few hours work trying to to get my nice earphones working again.some were expensive, and well worth doing the repair. and also its very satisfying to repair things with your hands. many regards Colin. UK.
I've got about 10 pairs of headphones waiting to be repaired. Gonna have a session on it. Totally worth the time and money. Maybe you silly haters can just borrow someone else's tools for the job, or repair all your mates headphones with the gear you buy, making yourself useful in your community, saving electrical landfill, and getting one over The Man with your rad fixer skillz? Thanks Rich for the vid.
great tutorial, may I add a few tips: 1. Dont strip back enamel, just solder right over it, it will penetrate the enamel insulation with no problem. 2. Use some nail clippers (or dedicated mini side cutters) to clean up solder and excess wires. much cleaner than scissors. 3.When soldering, the solder will wick toward the heat so its best to heat the base then add the wire and solder on top, it will wick through the wire to the base and wont create a cold solder joint, and use flux when you can, it keeps the solder from rolling right off chrome plating. 4. The jack has a crimp on the end, use it! Crimp the cable with pliers or a crimper (the ones shown have a weird U shaped press, thats the crimper) its better than hot glue and youll be able to R&R that jack again in 6 months when they fail again. They always seem to break right at the jack base so always start looking there. Those that say buy new ones should consider that some of these ear buds cost up to $1000, (google Shure SE846) and tossing them due to an open is out of the question.
well i have sony walkman earhones dude bt i got red nd blue wire comming out of my right earplug so what to do with that....the left plug has copper and green but the right one has copper red and green
Great tutorial :) The jack is the most vulnerable area . This is the spot that gets broken most of the time. Unfortunately, the jacks on the market are very poor quality and will decrease the sound quality significantly if you choose to replace the original with those.
Tank you very much :) Fixed all my headphones now :D I was told that it is not doable and I was buying new headphones each time.. I regret that I was so ignorant not to search the RU-vid for the fix....
duuuude! the step that helped me was to grind the fu***** cover of the green and red cables!!! I spent all morning and I didnt notice those covers. thanks
So 1st question is instead of hot glue can i use industrial glue and 2nd one is I have a Philips mouthpiece head phone it is showing the same problem as in the video is there some different techniques for the mouth piece?
I have the BOSE IE2 earphones and the plastic cover of the wire, right below the earphones is begining to crack. No shortcut so far. I wanna use heat shrink soldering to reinforce and protect my headphones but... How is this possible? I can not just insert the headphones wire in a heat shrink tube from any of the headphone's end. So... I was thinking... If I cut the heat shrink tube in a way it can embrace the wire right below the headphone... Will it work?
I have iPhone 5 earbuds and what happened to me was that when I dropped my iPod the metal piece you insert was bent. Will replacing it using this method be able to fix the problem since now no sounds comes out at all?
I have a problem, I got these headphones for Christmas and I've been very careful with it, but all of a sudden today there was a problem at the very tip where you plug it in. There is only sound if it is at a certain angle😐 which is rediculous because I have barely touched it😐 what do you think the problem is in it?
i have an HTC headphones of 1400 rs & have the same problem near the pin & now i have replaced the pin now its working awesome thanks buddy 100 likes.................)
Hey! My earbud's left side/speaker is a lot quiter than the right one. It does not goes mute in any position, it's only quiter. What do you think, the problem is in the plug? Should i replace it to a new one like in this video?
Hey, I hope you can help me out; please? When I plug in my earphones, I can hear the buzz-click sound from the earpieces that signify that it's connected, however, the audio still comes from the mobile speakers. They're a spare HTC set (I'm not sure for which handset) that I've been using for three months or so. I've tried plugging in other earphones (they were faulty, too, with audio from only one piece) but they didn't have this problem. I can try this same thing, right?
quick question. My ear buds are working but they only display the instrumental part of songs and muffled voices. is this the headphones fault or my phone? Thank you!
i have the same brand but mine is the one that controls the volume up and down/stop and play/handsfree earbuds..awesome bose earbuds and i love them! Can u help me how to fix the loose wire from the right side (where the controls are located )it got pulled when i dropped my cellphone with the earbuds(duh)still attached to my cellphone.I wonder if you could help me or make a video for this problem?please and thanks...your videos are really easy to understand and not boring!more power to you!thanks!
Hey man! thanks for the video. I have the bose ie2 earphones and what broke is the 9mm plug, like the actual metal exposed plug that goes into the phone, not the wires or anything inside. And before I try to repair it i'd like to know if I'm gonna loose the sound quality if I use a new (non Bose) plug. Cheers!
I have the opposite issue with my headphones , the jack seems to work " okay " although i'm not sure , but to get all the sound back ( i only have a distant partial sound ) i need to twist / bend the part of the wire that connect to the actual headphones all the way up the cable . Should i replace the jack or does it require some more complex thing to do ? Because it's a Razer Black Shark headset and it's worth a handful of money so i'd rather try to fix it rather than buy a new one :/
how do you know which part is defective? I mean, some headphones have control in the middle, is it the one after the jack or the one after the controller?
Hi ! I accidently dropped right side of my earphone to a water of glass and it stayed there about 1 sec while I was listening to music. It still works but not sure about its' bass same as the left one now. Can you say it's broken or not ? I can't be sure maybe it's psychological. Please help.
