How to repair PVC pipe: The Compression Fitting

Greg Chick, Ramona's Plumber, shows how to repairing broken PVC pipe where there is limted space and pipe movement available, by using a compression fitting.
This particular method is limited to low pressure situations such as irrigation distribution lines to the sprinkler heads - not water main or water supply lines. Though there are compression fittings available that can handle high pressure, that's for another video.
The compression fitting does not require a solvent joint, as so it is great for situations where the repair area is flooded.
See the other PVC joining videos for additional methods.

Putting up shelves in the front room, drilled a hole in 10mm radiator water pipe. Was looking at patches, aka, bodge jobs, didnt think about a compression fitting. £2.30 from local hardward shop and half hour later, pipe sorted and wall filled in, waiting to dry so i can sand and paint. Before the misses gets back from holiday in a couple of days. 😆 So thanks for this, as i nearly bodge jobbed it with tape and hose clamps.

Thanks for video. Your example of cramp space and low pipe flexibility fits my scenario well.

Thank you, I been joining PVC since early 70's and even I still need to pay attention. Just because home depot sells the stuff and it looks easy, doesn't mean one can "Just stuff it together". Respectful workmanship is a daily task and I salute you for watching, thanks again.. Greg

Excellent video. Many videos showing how to fit the coupling/connector to a pipe, but yours is the first I found that showed how to do it when the pipe is broken and can't be moved.

No one ever explains the amount of overlap needed. So, essentially it should be the width of the tee's handle portion. Thanks!

I'm a lineman, but was raised on a farm. Being So, you have to know a LOT of different trades because hiring people from the Trades IS EXPENSIVE. I have used these cpc1000 compression coupling a lot. They compensate for ground movement and are easy to install as you don't have to dig out as much around the break. HOWEVER, I have NEVER cut more then 3/4 to 1" between the pipe ends. If it came to the point where I had to remove MORE, i would cut the pipe back and with a glued coupling add more to the length. Why, GROUND MOVEMENT. Yes, Ground shifts, especially black or red clay which Cracks in dry times and returns in wet times. If you use a Dry Lube, the pipe is allows to move back and forth without a leak. Used them as long as they have been out, never had a problem. THIS demenstration however WILL end up with you digging the same place out AGAIN the next time you have an extended Dry Period. Count on it.

If water mains are 60-80 lbs, then wouldn't all incoming pressurized lines be the same 60-80 lbs? Why would pressure be less at various points in the system if what you repaired was a pressurized area?

awesome!, but would you do the same procedure for the compression coupler if the the pipe were copper instead of pvc such as for an irrigation fix?
@ramonasplumber
@ramonasplumber 14 лет назад
They make what is called a "fernco" it is a black rubber coupling having hose clamps both ends. Ferncos are slip fit and can slid all the way either way and back. Drain lines have very low pressure and this if code approved and widely used, both within walls and out , or under ground.

Hi, thanks for your response, I noticed after a shower you turn if off and you hear that air sound , Im thinking to replace the whole set for the bath tub, but I think that there is air .I found this little device in the basement that is like a air/out pipe, a tiny one, do not know if this may help. How could I get the air out? Thanks a bunch.

Absolutely, After repairing a pipe you need to flush the air out. What air problems do you have? Two story house ? long main line? on well water? do you have a pump in the system ?
@ramonasplumber
@ramonasplumber 13 лет назад
You need to use a pressure gauge to measure pressure, and when no water is moving/being used. Compression fittings work better if they have the stainless steel rings that grip the pipe whether copper or PVC..Yes copper size compression couplings are made. "CTS" not "IPS" designation.

I used this compression fitting on a 1 1/2 PVC pipe going into a commercial building ( right before the main entering building) 1 1/2 PVC 10' pipes say rated for 350 psi? It's been holding...am I safe here? I'm covering it back up it's underground then pouring cement over today...will it still move it's all braced.

That's a nice demo on a desktop but will not work. He cut out too much pipe. Once he pushed those rubber gaskets back in, they were no longer completely over the pipe.

I agree. It looks scary. I don't know what the manufacturer says but in this video they specify that the gap between the pipe ends should NOT exceed the distance between the threads on the compresson coupling (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VVNbNRnyQ0E.html).

NO teflon is needed. The seal comes from the compression of the beveled rubber collar.

You mention 3" PVC, that is the waste line? you have a waste line you use a Mission Coupling having hose clamps. You need supply water? you must have a smaller line to tap into.

Hola Awesome Viedo .I Have A Leak On A One Inch Gavlvanized Pipe Can I Fix It With A Compression Fitting ? Thanks Greg
@djscrizzle
@djscrizzle 7 лет назад
Yeah, it's easy to do. They make a metal version, commonly called a "Dresser Coupling", after a company that makes them. Clean up the pipe, cut out the right size section and pop a Dresser on it. Should be trouble free for years.
@ramonasplumber
@ramonasplumber 12 лет назад
Well sometimes no room for lifting pipe and 4 elbows is too much fitting loss. So, slip fittings exist.

Pressure is a factor, CTS is copper tube size, PVC is IPS, iron pipe size, compression couplings are made for both. "I" would use Pro Press, but that is not the tool of DIY'ers. Here I am wanting to use simple terms to help save water and people. The professional methods are different. Shark bite is a brand name of fittings for copper that "push fit" no tool or torch needed and the joint can be wet. "No skill needed" is a false statement on any plumbing procedure. So read & learn

I am trying to deliver instructions clearly. nyone might see how envolved things might get and just hire a pro instead. My real desire is to show why contractors need to charge what seems "Too much" for Just" doing what ever. at the same time IF a homeowner can DIY, then DIRight.

Huffing PVC solvent is illegal, Code does not prohibit using 4 90's. This is not a cheap way to replace a coupling, it is for when no room exists for the moving of pipes to move them away from each other to then push then to gather into a coupling. This is not best practice, it is a choice of possible or not. Slip fix fittings are sometimes too long to fit with in the space existing. Code bans fittings that are unnecessary and not using 4 90's.

I Highly recommend NO ONE use these fittings, they are exactly what he says CHEAP and easy, im a home owner and bought a house last year, well one by one every 2 months after we bought the house these fittings have all began to rott, i dont know how old they are but they all seem to spring a leak and in large amounts, the last 2 caused my water bill to shoot up 185.00 most of them ran all day till i got home, my yard is not high pressure, id point anyone to his "4 90's" method.
