I have the Wilcox and Gibbs, singer 24 in my collection but I guess I should add this one too, even though its a toy and have some stamped parts on, the main body is still cast iron and its miniature size sets it apart, its cute. I have seen a few at the flea market, next time I will get one 🙂 for the right price.

Thank you for this Alex I have inherited an Essex miniature sewing machine from my Mum it was her Aunts machine and she sewed a lot of her clothes using this machine. My Dad recently gave it too me and thanks to this video I have got her making a beautiful chain stitch, and I have introduced her to my grandson who was mesmerised by her, her said sewing with her was very satisfying 😂 I totally understand what he means 😂. The only issue I have is that the case is very worn and rusty, do you have any tips on how to clean the rusty catchers and hinges or should I just use a rust eater, clean as carefully as possible and lacquer to stop further damage?

Hi Alex this is a wonderful video. I have just found a little singer 20, but it is missing its thread tensioner and its spool rod. Apart from that it all looks great. I wondered if you have any tips as to how I could locate the spare parts for this machine, or is there any way I could dud up a simular tension unit? Thank you for the great video. I have the SewHandy from my childhood, but the timing is off. There may be parts missing. I kept the machine, the box and all the accessories, all my life. Our house flooded, but not the little machine- until workers moved it out of a closet and onto the garage floor, where it did flood. This happened as the hot water tank was replaced. The beautiful black base rusted some. I have two young granddaughters, so I bought a second machine, so they could each have one. My thought was that I could compare the workings of the second machine and hopefully fix my original. Well, now neither are working. I can't seem to find the problem. After watching your video, I am encouraged to try working on them again. Do you know of anyone who repairs these for other people?

I have this same one, and have been trying to make a little something with it for someone as a gift, but I've been wondering how to actually effectively sew things, without the stitch coming undone easily, after it's finished! Is this an issue you've run into at all? There doesn't seem to be any good way of "tying" it at the beginning and end, such as a quick back and forth like I've done with other machines. Do you have any ideas? Whenever I finish sewing a line, it's in danger of easily becoming fully unraveled by a tug of the end~ like a flour sack! 😸 Which is great fun to do, but not at all what I'm going for in this instance. 😏
Nice collection! My sewhandy is missing the spool pin. Do you know what size rod i can use for a replacement? I have a second toy that has no name and is also missing the spool pin. This one should have a base with a thread guide built into it. I saw only one in all my searching, it was on EBay. That’s how I know it should have the small base. It is also missing the tension unit which has only the bent “stud” there. Nothing on this machine can be taken apart as all connections are pins or something that would have to be drilled out. I would like to fix these little machines but don’t know where to start. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I just got a besty ross from the orginal owner she kept really good care of it but over years of non use it seems maybe that's why the hand crank is a bit stiff as I turn it it turns kind of ok then gets really hard then it goes ok again then does it again in two different areas of the turning. I have oiled it really good with Singer Muli Oil could you have a ideal what could be the problem with the crank?
I have that very machine from my mother. I don't have the looper for it, however. I purchased the Singer Sewhandy, made in Great Britain, just this week and it arrived today. I think the tension must be wrong because is seems to get tangled around the looper as well as skip stitches. This helped and I will try to see if it solves the issue.
Oh! what type of needle does the SewHandy take? I tried a needle but it is too long. I cleaned up the needle that came with it, but not sure what replacements I can find for it.
@@hickoryhillinthebigwoods-r759 It takes the 24x1 needle and make sure you put it in with the flat to the right and thread left to right. In this vid Alex doesn't say to take the thread through the hole in the top of the needle bar before threading the needle and maybe this model doesn't, but my earlier model does. So do check the exact threading path for your machine. (If your particular model threads right-to-left you can still use the same needle, just be sure to put it in with the flat to the left in that case. Ideally for those models you use a 24x3 needle that has the flat on the other side to start with but those are hard to find and the 24x1 will still work.) The other thing to make sure you do is wind the handwheel in the right direction - away from you. This is unlike the larger machines where you wind the hand-crank away from you but the wheel comes toward you. So think of the handwheel as being a hand-crank on these little machines. :-)

@@laurachattin6037 The best advise I can give for that is to look very closely at the youtube vids people have where they show the underside and the machine sews well. While the vid is paused you can press < and > (the ones that are for the typed symbols, not the ones that move your cursor) to forwards and backwards frame by frame. Carefully not where the looper is in relation to the needle and the loop that forms on the needle that the looper picks up. Compare that to your own machine and see if either (a) the hook is in the right place at the right time to pick up the loop, but the looper isn't in the right spot or (b) the looper isn't in the right place to pick it up. Also check how the "old loop" is released - and when, by the looper. And where the feed dog is in relation to that as well. There are screws that let you loosen the looper and so on to adjust these things but before you loosen the screws and twiddle with yours to get things in the right place at the right time make sure you understand just where the needle and rotation of the looper need to be in relation to each other - including where the needle is on both the upstroke and downstroke. I know someone on Ebay who sells an adjuster's manual + extra tips they've added. I've ordered one but it hasn't come yet. They also sell a "set" of the user manuals for the different versions that came out over the years.

You didn't address what to do if the feed dogs don't move up and down. They move if I physically move them but they don't when trying to stitch. Please advise and help me with this problem. Thanks!

Hello Alex, I’m wondering if you have in your collection a Bremer & Bruckheimer miniature chain stitch sewing machine, I live in Australia and I have one but it’s hard to find much info about it, I has a little needle but don’t know the size, I know it’s threaded Left to right but I cannot get it to make a stitch. Alex! By golly I did it! I fixed the machine all on my own. The needle was not completely in properly, it was a slight off. Then the tension disk needed to be messed with. Now, could you be a dear and tell me how to release the fabric from the machine? Also, how do I tie off the strings to it doesn't unravel the threads? I haven't tried this yet - but piecing together what I've been able to find here and there I believe this is the process: To fasten off stitching at the end of the seam sew two stitches past the end of the seam and stop the machine with the needle bar at its highest point. Then with the left hand draw a finger length of thread to the left through the hole near the upper end of the needle bar. With the right hand, using a pair of scissors, draw the slack of the thread to the right through the eye of the needle. Then pull the thread upward from the work, the presser foot being down, and cut the thread close to the goods. Pull the work from you and the end of the thread will be drawn through the loop. To fasten off the stitching in the work stop the machine with the needle in the work, place the fingers on the machine close to the presser foot to the presser foot to prevent the work from moving. Raise the presser foot and take one more stitch in the last hole made and stop the machine with needle bar raised to the highest point. Then with the left hand draw a finger length of thread to the left through the hole near the upper end of the needle bar. With the right hand, using a pair of scissors, draw the slack thread to the right through the eye of the needle. Then pull the thread upward from the work and cut the thread close to the goods. Pull the work from you and the end of the thread will drawn through the loop on the underside of the work.
@@Plueschbaellchen I've got the pictures too on a little document I've made up for my own use of images I've found here and there on the web but unfortunately I couldn't attach those. So I just re-typed out the instructions I've seen for two different early versions but adapted them to remove references to "Figures" (that is, diagrams and pictures) she wouldn't be able to see. I got an 8-spoke one without a numbered threading path from the 1914-1922 era yesterday (present from hubby) and currently have a few parts out for a good cleaning. So far the needle bar is cleaning and polishing up beautifully. Bit by bit I'm going to clean and polish all I can but it came with no manual or even clamp so internet research all the way to get her going really well again. The needle is not in great shape and it doesn't feed properly at the moment - I have to pull the fabric through to make stitches. But if I do that it does make nice stitches so I know that fundamentally it works. Cutest thing ever. It needs the proper screws for the needle clamp and set screw for the handwheel, and the spool pin is bent (but at least it is there) so it's going to be a while before she's at her best. Ideally I'm going to hunt down the clamp and cloth guide with its little bed screw as well. Oh yes - and did I mention it's Cute? Even my hubby thinks it is. I think he might like at least much as I do. :-)

Hello I’ve come across a miss Durham toy sewing machine. The tension wire or whatever where the back bobbin sits on top is broken or missing. Is it still repairable? And how would I repair that?
The one in my little profile circle is the one I got it hasn't arrived yet I was thinking about getting singers toy sewing needles for it this is made in Germany any help would be greatly appreciated he tears his clothes all the time and I'm retired now so I'm a domestic goddess

Please do not add music to your videos. It is very stressful, hurts the ears, prevents concentration, and is so annoying I have to watch with sound off. Defeats the purpose of a demo. Never add music to a demo please.
