He explained the working of the gear clutch assembly of a top load washer. He found that the bearing closest to the drum was okay but the one closest to the pulley was defective. That is difficult to access and hence difficult to pull out. So he advised if such is the scenario, then it is better to change the gear clutch assembly as a full unit since trying to change this defective gear may not be a lasting solution. This could be true because (a) very few technicians have the patience and the skill to access that bearing (closer to the pulley) and (b) it requires custom made plate separators (working like gear pullers) to separate the sealed housing of this bearing. If done carefully, it comes out at a fraction of cost of changing the entire gear clutch assembly. Depending on the number of years the defective washer is, a decision could be taken.
