This is just a short video on how to I repaired my starter motor problem. DON'T pay $400 - $500 to get someone to put a new one in for you. Muscle up and do it yourself !!
Nice work. I typically work backwards. Did the job yesty and then thought to check the net and see if there was a video. Just as a side note I pulled the other end off and regreased the gears and bearings as they were quite dry. My old girl has 250K on the clock so I though a relube was on the cards. Quite a reliable starter if they are serviced once in a blue moon as they are not sealed like most modern units.
Just did this on my 100 series. Amazing thank you. My words of wisdom the 3 little 7mm bolts snap very easily (common issue for me always have the removal tools out when I do anything) finger tight then another half turn with the ratchet.
Mate, you are legend. I have exactly that problem and I'm pretty sure this will fix it. Thank you so much for posting. Btw, it looks like you leather steering wheel has worn through, mine did the same and I managed to find a plastic one on ebay for about $20 from a wreck. The first one I bought never had the airbag, but I managed to find a plastic one with the airbag space. The air cassette simply unplugs and you pop it into the new steering wheel. Good as new
Glad i could help mate ,i gave it a good test a few weeks back in a water crossing that nearly went south , but true to form the old Prado started up after 5 mins sight seeing in the middle of the dam , lol Prado Lake Lyall
Thanks FlickinLures, Your guide helped me heaps. Had done this before on a 3vz-e but not a 5vz-fe. To help others out who might be going to do this job: I have a manual transmission so I didn't have to worry about the transmission dip-stick. I had to use a flat (non-offset) ring spanner on the bottom bolt and a 12ml socket with universal joint on the top (like you). You definitely got to remove the 2 bolts holding on the brake line. Also you mentioned the aircon bracket? Didn't affect me. I got new contacts from Ashdown-Ingrams. They only sold them in bags of 10 - (got 8 left - for next time?) Lovely way to spend a Saturday arvo! Doug.
no worries ya gotta love youtube , my starter is still going strong today, i would have done the same as you and replaced the bits but a boys weekend away the following day made me take the punt
Looks good. I have the diesel so i think my starter motor is on the other side. So I'd have to take off the left front wheel. Mine engages sometimes so I suspect that its getting worn. 410K on it now thanks
Cheer`s Mate! I was going to be one of the suckers to buy a new starter, followed your video worked a treat, Due to wear i did end up replacing the connector solinoid you first had in your hand $5. thanks again hey.....
