Thanks for this, just swapped mine on a 2015 explorer. Seems as long as you don’t have parking assist it’s a pretty straightforward swap. One thing to note, I was able to change mine without removing the exhaust. I disconnected the two front ports and there was adequate flex in that slinky looking part (cat conv?) to gently lay down the front and provide room enough to get everything out. YMMV
😀😀😀 you don t have to remove the exhausts part, don t have to remove ball stud!!..I did mine yesterday. 2 stands under the frame , tires off, sway bar links off both sides . Loose 2 bolts that put together the front chassis and the rest of the frame (24 mm wrench).have a bottle Jack to support the the front frame juste in case. Whith one hand rotate the steering rack 90 degre Clockwise then Pull it out smoothly. This is done the passenger side.😉😉😉😉😉 set!!!!
Less than a year after this video was posted, Ford recalled 1.2 MILLION Explorers for failing electronic rack and pinion assemblies at a staggering expense of $180 MILLION dollars. Unbelievable crap being put on the streets these days.
Extended warrenty actually. Ours went out not long ago, we brought it into ford after searching online and discovering the recall. They said we'll fix it for you for free(sweet). Next day get a call and they tell us its actually and extended warrenty for 100,000 miles and we were at 140,000 so now i had to buy a 1000 dollar part that ill be putting in this weekend
@@mattyates9305 I have a 2015 and it needs the rack replaced I got one for $1100 canadian and will see if it works this week how did your go did it work
Yes, you need to take it to the dealer to reprogram the steering otherwise I replaced the electronic board with my old one to avoid this step Where is my case was mechanical issue
One question: I accidentally polished a small segment of the anti-rust zinc coated surface of my steering rack: How do I recover the area I accidentally polished?
Thanks for the sharing, that is very useful, and I have my car Fusion 2012 that has tuck noises from RHS while crossing rough roads, I checked and removed the boot of the tie rod and found metal chips, what do you think about this chips and how to solve, Thanks in advance
Do you think that there is enough clearance to drop the sub frame without taking off the exhaust. My bolts are pretty darn rusted. I even soaked them with PB blaster.
Did you mess with the front motor mounts? Dealer is fixing mine under the recall, they called and stated oh yeah. By the way need struts and tires which I know will need to be done soon, but the. Said oh yeah you have a broken motor mount...and I didnt have issues before like the motor jerking..think they are playing me..100 for the part...and 200 for installation but if it's a mount the gotta touch anyway..wtf..thoughts?
The only mount you have to move is the lower mount. I think there is only 3 mounts. 2 on the sides & 1 under the car. If it's cracked then that might be u they are recommending to fix it
@@shortyboy1986 Problem ismy sister Have a problem with that and there's A recall in that year. She took it there And they said that's not an electrical Issue it's mecanical and is not under Warranty🙄
@@shortyboy1986 I'm going to replace it and let the shop program it when they do my alignment. Thank you. Did you order a motorcraft one? I'm having trouble finding a part.
Did you end up doing this? I have a 2013 Ford Flex also and we are looking for all the information we can. My husband is planning to replace it himself. Did you have to get it programmed? I read that you can program it yourself... wondering if that is an option.
@@shortyboy1986 Thank you for your help, but now im having alot of trouble sliding back in . Every angle seems to get stuck , How exactly did you slide it back in . I would really appreciate your help humbly
Update, the process replacing my electric rack a success!!! Junkyard rack and opinion with 43000 miles cost $100.00 Ford reprogramming cost $125.00 Ford wheel alignment cost $ 90.00 Thanks for everything!
Good info. I have a 2013 F-150 with eletric power steering. It runs well, aside from it feeling like it needs a hub replaced all is well. I watched this to see if it's something I might want to try at home if the pickup ever needs it. I know my install will be a little different than yours, but now I have an idea what I'll need to do. I think the main differences are location of the skid plate and exhaust.
Roger Villarreal Did you have to remove the exhaust pipe completely from the car or just loosen the bolts and detaching it, if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m really surprised you didn’t have to reprogram it after you finished, Ford keeps saying you have to reprogram the rack and pinion after replacement.
Scott Pence How has the Salvage electronica power steering rack worked out for you? Anything I should be looking for such as miles when purchasing to use racks?
Same story with the exact number of 90,000 miles and a 16 Explorer as well (Platinum). The assembly is expensive as hell, I just bit the bullet and paid $1400 (include tax) for a REMANUFACTORED part. Its my first Ford and will be my last one
Does anyone know if the rack has to be completely removed in order to change the four bushings (two upper and two lower) on the rack? Or can it be done quasi in place?
Do you know if I can put a rack and pinion automatic parking in one that is not? I found one from a limited 2015 and mine is 2011 xlt, I would like someone to help me
@@shortyboy1986 I tried to look for information on the internet and called the Ford store and they told me that they don't know if it is compatible, it is a very expensive part and I found one with 65k miles for 400 dollars but I don't know if it would work
Hey I recently replaced the steering rack on my 2013 explorer. Just like you said it was fine for alittle while then the power steering rack went out. Is this the same problem you had, I recall you saying it was fine after the install but eventually had to be programmed? How did you know it had to be programmed? What notifications did the vehicle give?
4 years on, how is it. I see you used a Detroit Axle rack.... I have had horrible luck with that company and wouldn't recommend them at all. Hopefully you had good luck.
@@shortyboy1986 yup, third time was the charm with Detroit Axle, and being in Canada, you can imagine how long that repair took. I'm looking at $1400 CAD from Ford for the Exploder rack. Mine has park assist (Limited) so I assume it'll need to go to Ford for programming. Tuesday itll go in to see if new software will help, I'm not holding my breath lol
I want to buy a 2014 Ford Explorer, do you know if this cremayera has any improvements for that year or is it the same as the one from 2011 to 2013? thank you
Buenas amigo saludos de casualidad no tienes el programa para desbloquear los módulos que yo trabajo en Venezuela con esas camionetas y no tengo como desbloquear
Stupid question I have an electric rack and pinion ste67 being changed right now, does it have to be bled? Or that’s only for racks that are not electrical and require fluid
I need to do catalytic converters, and maybe a power steering rack, I have had a strut mount binding so I'm gunna do the struts first to see if it helps. The rear cat is gunna be lots of fun
Hello I have a 2011 Ford Explorer, was there any difference between the new one and the old one, because I can see in the video that in the old one there is bushing, and in the new one there isn’t.
I just installed a new steering rack for mi 2013 Ford Explorer (Police Interceptor) today. I've been able to fix it right by watching your video but it's not turning and I think it needs to be programmed. Please, can you help me with that. I hope to hear from you soon. Stanley from Ghana 🇬🇭.
They do have a recall , they'll pay if it has less than 150,00, i called ford and thats what they told me, the mechanic told me that also, ( mine has 156,00) so ill have to do it myself)
@@shortyboy1986 depends on the VIN. My 2014 was produced just after the 2011-2013 recall. I am saving receipts in case someday they add another 6mo of manufactured vehicles to the recall. I think the models sold in 2014 that were produced up to April of 2013 are covered.
I have a question looking to buy a rack and pinion for the same suv and its asking me about submodel with automated parking system or without automated parking system just don’t know which one to buy and also thanks for the video
it is referring to the self parking, the unit with self parking is more expensive...its the one I needed. dealer can tell you which one needed by vin number.
If I do not reprogram it will it still feel hard to turn ? not as hard as the old one or did I just got lucky and got a bad rack and pinion? Will recalibrating the steering angle sensor help?
@@shortyboy1986everything is plugged correctly, I put some grease on it and it seemed to be better but I still havent reprogram it, will that be causing it to still be a bit hard ?
I just got mine replaced but the lane keep assist, service advancetrac, park aid are on. Does that mean that the replacement was not what my truck needs? or it just needs a reprograming?
@@shortyboy1986 went to Ford to get it programmed but they couldnt get it to work correctly so it seems like I was sold an incompatible rack. All Land Keeping Assist, Park Aid Fault, pre-collision system, hill start, terrain management system lights are on
Just want to add an update here. After the installation, a bunch of warning lights were on the dash then I took it to Ford dealership to get it programmed, they could not resolve it and charged me $185. I went home, ordered an OBD2 scanner tool for $21 (the one that is compatible with Forscan), clicked Load Factory AB for the PSCM and done. Now I really wonder who did the Ford dealership hire to work in the Service department. $185 + 1.5hour of waiting for NOTHING. For those who own a Ford, get yourself the OBD2 tool because that tool alone can save you a lot of headache
Is it possible to only replace the motor? And how severe or how common is this issue? I have a 2015 with 106K and I occasionally hear a random 'thump' when I turn the steering all the way to either side.
I know it's late but my understanding is the recall was for models built at the Canadian factory only. Dealer wants over $3K to do this work now. I am doing the rack, control arms and sway bar links this weekend $1300 in parts and a day of sweat equity. I cant complain though I got 228K miles out of the original parts.
We are doing one in a 2011 and I talked to some one at the Ford Dealer Parts inquiring about buying one. They said they needed to be reprogrammed after installation. However it looked like you just installed, plugged it up and drove off...
Very useful thanks, it took me time to find a straight forward video. U did so well. I wanna ask u. Did u need to code the neew one or its just a plug and play type of thing . ?
@@shortyboy1986 do you know what plug controls the lane assist? I called the company that I bought it from and they had no clue and after a Google search I came up empty handed
What made you have to get it reprogrammed? Were you at least able to drive it there for reprogramming? My 14 steering just started getting tight today at low speeds.
I put mine in and I had the traction control light and hill assist lights come on right away. Took it to the dealer and they said they programmed it but the lights were still on. They looked into it and said either wrong rack or bad rack. So either the electronics on it are bad or are wrong. Detroit axle is being no help. So I will be paying for 2 alignments and programming done twice.
Hello just replace mine on a 2013 xlt. When i took home from the shop sterring was alittle tight and the sterring wheel wasn't returning on a turn . lights came on adv trac service, power sterring service now wheel as hard as a rock.
Did you had to do any using Ford IDS software? Just replace mine on a 2016 and the steering wheel feels too hard to make turns. Also Service advancetrack warning lights came up. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
We had to get it programmed. I just installed it. Just make sure everything is hooked back up. There wasn't any lights on when I installed it. It wasn't hard to turn either.
I just replaced mine in my 2014 Ford Focus and after driving my hill Assist disabled in my traction control light came on along with the i indicator light took to fords had paid the $95 to program it they cleared the codes attempt to drive on highway quickly seemed like steering was still hard and the lights came back on again and just all around felt like bad idea to get off the highway and go back roads home so it does drive the steering isn’t like it originally was so I’m still searching for the answer to this problem turning up empty handed it loosens up keeping it under 30 mph and get harder the faster ya go so I know your pain I’m stuck between is my new unit faulty or is something else going on maybe an alignment cause it came with new ball joints would this effect how stiff the steering is so far I’ve found nothing if you figure it out please let me know
how did it go for you? Mine is 16 Explorer as well (platinum) and my reman rack should be here tomorrow. Finger crossed that everything will go smoothly
